  1. According to Automotive News, "The Mercedes midsize pickup would be positioned here as a luxury passenger vehicle, rather than as a commercial vehicle as it will be elsewhere." Of course, the comments by Mercedes USA's CEO reaffirm that this will be the case: "Not every pickup in the U.S. is going to job sites. Just drive around Greenwich, Conn., and see how many pickups there are. You realize this is not a demographic that is showing up with their work boots on job sites. Those sales are taken care of by the domestics." It's a $50K Chevy Colorado competitor. AKA: Dead faster than you can say 'Blackwood.'
  2. Who's in charge of market research at Mercedes? Nobody wants $50K+ midsize trucks. The only customers for this vehicle would be people dead-set on wanting a Mercedes, and only a Mercedes. Anyone else who might be interested will then head to a Ford/GM/RAM dealership to find a King Ranch/Denali/Big Horn 1500 model with more payload, more capacity and more room, for a similar or cheaper price. In the truck world, 'more, more, more' reigns supreme. Probably being the operative word. Mercedes probably could build a better pickup than anyone. But instead, they chose Nissan. I feel bad for all 15 people who were excited for this vehicle.
  3. For this to remotely work, the buyer would have to want nothing but a Mercedes. Joe Average looking for a luxury pickup may be interested, but then he'll head to a domestic or Toyota dealership where he'll learn that he can get 'more truck' with all the luxury, for the same price. In the truck world, 'more' is better.
  4. Why RAM hasn't come out with a small pickup based on the FIAT 'Small-Wide' (and its 4x4 derivative (Jeep Renegade)) platform is beyond me. That'd be a perfect base to build a pickup for urban/suburban use, and would likely hit the fuel economy targets that RAM needs.
  5. I'm so glad my folks went ahead and preordered a Model X instead of waiting for this abomination to hit lots. The current model still looks sophisticated, if a bit bland. This design looks like it'd turn off potential RX buyers who want understated luxury.
  6. I'm not sure how Toyota can build the iA without some degree of disappointment. The company that built its reputation on small vehicles like the Corolla and Celica is now sourcing a small car platform from a competing automaker. And they still manage to ruin it.
  7. KIA's played this smart. You can tell they likely learned from Hyundai's mistake of toning down the Sonata. Still one of, if not the best, looking sedans in its category.
  8. Yeah, I'm hoping it's just FUD. It'd be a pretty lousy practice and I'm certain both Apple and Google would put a stop to it, as it'd end up tainting their brands.
  9. VW is supporting both, which I suspect would be the same for every automaker. What may remain to be seen is whether a vehicle's infotainment unit supports either system, or customers have to select the specific OS that matches their phone. I wouldn't be surprised if carmakers tried to charge for system 're-flashes,' for each time a consumer changes from Android to Apple and vice-versa.

Before debuting the hotly anticipated Apple Watch and the newest Macbook Air, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced at the 'Spring Forward' event today that 40 car models in 2015 will feature Carplay software for hands-free vehicle interaction. Carplay - and its Google competitor Android Auto - promise advanced features that natively integrate into the two largest smartphone operating systems. It's believed that certain automakers worry that Apple and Google will usurp their own branded infotainment systems, creating a homogenous experience regardless of automaker. Cook states that every "major" automaker has now committed to using Carplay, which could signal that holdout automakers like Toyota have finally given in. Or if you're really proficient and want more flexibility, you can buy webspace and move your blog to a less restrictive, more optioned Wordpress environment. To set yourself apart, you'll want good 'search engine optimization.' In very simple terms, that means using a set of keywords in your posts (about your subject matter) consistently to make your blog easier to search. Writing can be challenging. You'll want to consider that people read websites in an 'F' shape, so importance is placed on your first sentences.

  20. In Vancouver, we've aggressively built cycling infrastructure. Certain projects like taking one vehicle lane and converting it into a safe, dedicated bike lane have had mixed results. Many cyclists don't like riding along main thoroughfares, choosing to ride on a parallel street one block away. So we're speed-controlling many of those roads, and providing optimal space for cyclists. It keeps cars and bikes at safe distances and makes more sense than taking away arterial road lanes, which makes motorists and businesses upset. But what's needed is to institute a congestion tax and charge drivers who enter urban areas. This encourages more transit (and cycling) use, and the reduced congestion is safer for cyclists and those on scooters/motorcycles.
  21. I love how C&G's resident champions of liberties and 'FURRDOMS' are the first to want automated vehicles and young and/or minority people off the roads. Stop being such communazis. I have good income. Taking transit is not optimal. I want a personal mode of conveyance where I can stretch out, and not have to engage the road. If I want a safe, reliable mode of transport, I should be allowed to buy it. My owning an automated car doesn't immediately stop you from having the freedom to own a conventional vehicle. If you want a vehicle that lets you transmit your driving errors into the nearest concrete median, be my guest. It's not a zero-sum game. Automated cars have been a dream since the 1920's. For nearly a century, people have wanted to not drive. We're nearly at that stage and you somehow believe it's the fault of 'kids?' That's dumb. Some people don't like driving as much as you do.
  22. Yes. Driving in the city is awful. There's nothing 'fun' about stop-and-go gridlock, or being caught behind a trail of morons who don't see the left-turn signal. Hell, when driving last week, I was one of hundreds of people stuck on an exit because some driver was too intimidated to merge, despite plenty of gaps in traffic flow. I'd rather spend time reading or enjoying the scenery. The faster we remove people who want to be removed from driving, the better. Those who still want to drive will enjoy more efficient roads. Win-win.
