One month does not a trend make. And to be honest, I'm still amazed at the F-Series' lack of success to be much bothered by one off month at GM. Ford has either achieved market saturation for their pickup recipe or they can't choose a frame vendor to save their life (I'm betting on the first one). Meanwhile, while Ford has edged closer to GM, Mopar is still approaching Ford at a much quicker pace. Not bad for an outfit that has almost zero presence in the small-car and luxury segments, wot? Finally, yes... I've been a bit busy with work and Canada Day stuff to spend much time ruminating on these numbers. But I've spoken my peace now.- 27 replies

The F-Series is in freefall. That alone takes the zing out of any Ford sales numbers. They need that thing to make money for them, and quickly.

I don't. Mine will break even in about three years. Give it a rest with the generic calculations already. I already showed that they're a total crapshoot.

It is a powerful statement. Sticking to their guns on the diesel engine is impressive too-this and the Canyonado shows that GM is exploring all possibilities for fuel efficiency. Good stuff!

Awesome front, awesome back, so-so middle, stupendous engine. If properly executed this could cause headaches for the competition in the segment. If they spread out the platform it will be a huge boost to Mopar's performance cred going forward. But I dunno if it'll hit Sergio's sales targets all by itself.

It was the very first thing that jumped out at me when I was reading the piece a while back. And To be fair to Bob, even he admits that he could have it wrong. He concludes the piece with this: "luxury brands are getting harder and harder to define. I fully admit my own views on them are in a state of flux. Ask me on different days and I'll give you a different answer." But, yeah. Whatever "luxury" may be in the 21st century automobile, cutting-edge engineering and technology must play a sizeable role. Cadillac, to its credit, now has this piece of the puzzle down cold. And the styling, while matured a bit from the '03 CTS, is at least distinctive.

Utilization of aluminum and its effectiveness in the Omega and F-Series. I would love to see a Duramax Diesel Dually Escalade with air suspension and an extended-range tank. Texas and Alberta alone could support it. Ain't gonna happen.

I'm a bit confused by Bob's logic on a couple of points here. First off, he criticized Cadillac's latest sedan offerings for not being huge sellers, then says that true luxury and ubiquity cannot coexist. Erm, ok. Bob's argument has one other revealing flaw, summarized in this quote: "thinking in terms of the luxury experience totally escapes people who consider luxury dining Red Lobster instead of Big Boy." If Bob Lutz wants to use that analogy to describe faux-luxury that's fine. But he misses the point entirely when he then says that styling is the be-all and end-all regardless of what lurks under the skin. Bottom line: if a mass-market restaurant cannot be a barometer of luxury dining, a mass-market chassis cannot be a barometer of luxury driving. Sorry Bob. But you whiffed on this one a bit.

I'm not sure I follow you on the product planning mistakes-the entire lineup is pretty solid these days, minus a small SUV for Cadillac and a bit of size differentiation between the Verano and Regal. If you're referring to the ignition switch mess, then it becomes a LOT more complicated an issue, at least for me.

Glass half-full counterpoint: if this chassis does turn out to be RWD-based then we're probably looking at the next Challenger or Cuda, and possibly a stretched version for the 300/Charger. On the high end it may become an entry-level Maserati coupe. Mopar needs such a platform to happen.

It's just progress, man. The Lambdas are an old but intrinsically good design. Given what GM has developed since they debuted it would be silly to think that the new ones won't be equally solid and also have class-leading tech and engineering behind them.

Eh, it is what it is. I read some of the recent posting when I checked my PMs over there, especially the ones by some of the mods. Sounds like their hands are tied for permabanning people, which in turn is a guarantee that you will always be a haven for the worst of the worst. This place, on the other hand, has standards. I must admit, it is a refreshing change.

The 3.6 engines are perfectly fine as a regular trim. If they weren't they wouldn't have been the massive sellers they've been over the years. But we all know what's what
