  1. They spent too much on the body material changes and too little on the rest of the vehicle. Who cares about an aluminum body if it's still the same weight as a Silverado and has two fewer gears in the tranny? And people have caught on to the EcoBoost's inability to generate FE numbers any better than a Hemi or Smallblock. Some folks are blaming the frame vendor issues. Maybe. But I also know it's easy to throw a vendor under the bus when a product is underachieving. And I'm leaning towards the second theory.
  2. Ya... everyone knows that ponycar customers are conpletely oblivious to performance numbers. ... Sorry, had to stop and laugh at that. But I'm done now so I can keep typing. Anyhow... ya. The Mustang is much like the F-Series: greatly improved over its predecessor and impressive when evaluated on its own. But put it against competition and it inevitably wilts.
  3. Actually, you totally can argue the performance. Most of the reviews of the EB Mustang have said that the performance is adequate, but the added mass saps the power somewhat. And the V8 has no power-to-weight advantage over the old car, though obviously the new rear suspension is a huge step in the right direction. The Camaro will once again be a love it/leave it styling proposition. But that will be its only possible weakness. The base turbo four will do fine against Ford's V6, it's Cadillac-sourced 3.6 will do fine against the EB, and the LT1 will roll over the Coyote.
  4. that would be an achievement as Mustang hasn't exceeded Camaro consistently for many years, however, it is a partial year for Camaro this year, so this will likely be Ford's only chance to do it easily. Given that the new Mustang is no sure thing to outperform the current Camaro on the street, I really don't like its chances in the showroom once the new one drops. And a few thousand per year to Richard Hammond clones in Europe won't really help when you consider that the Camaro's new platform has already sold tens of thousands of copies. Bottom line: I suspect he Mustang's sales trajectory will mirror that of the F-Series, possibly for the same reason.

  9. Might be a geography thing. Right now we're getting 18 hours of sunlight a day Up here and the temps are still reasonable (low 80s). I'll take what I can get of that because winters are kinda sucky.
  10. Hmmm. Depends, then. If you prefer leisurely drives through the woods with some nice river and mountain views go with the 1A portion and double back at Lake Louise. If you prefer mountains and lakes all up in your grille bypass 1A, stay on the TCH, and try and get to Moraine Lake. But hey, even if you're "just" able to make it to Canmore or Banff you're still gonna have a blast. I'm gonna be there in mid-September. I can't wait already. Edit: if you make it to Banff and decide to stop there, head up the road to Mount Norquay. There's a nice (but extremely sloped) field about halfway up, before the ski resort entrance. Good view of the town to be had, with Mount Rundle in the background.

  12. My road trip of choice from Calgary would be talking the Trans-Canada Highway (Route 1) out of Calgary into Banff National Park via Canmore. Depending on how long you got I'd visit the town of Banff itself and then head northwest until I get to Route 1A (Bow Valley Parkway) which I'd then take to Lake Louise. Get to Lake Louise and take Moraine Lake Road to the most awesome place I've yet to visit on the planet. That'll be about a day to do right-but what a day!
  13. Sunroofs aren't that bad. I didn't have one in my Camaro because it ruined the double-bubble roofline. But I've had them in both my trucks and my old HHR and they were dead-nuts reliable.
  14. Most of my time is spent somewhere between Edmonton and Fort McMurray/Fort Mackay area. I'm more into the oil sands part of the industry. August in Calgary? You'd better find time to hit Banff. YouTube Art St. Antoine's run through the region in a Nissan GTR for Motor Trend and thank me later. The driving out that way is fantastic-I run through there as often as I'm able.

Mopar has an interesting choice to make with the Ram: do they roll the dice on gaining production capacity somehow, or they dial back the incentives and hold the line on their current sales numbers? In a perfect world they'd use a hired gun like Magna to do more trucks for them like Porsche used to do (still does?) with the Boxster.

We all have ways of pointing out the obvious, is what I'm saying. You singling out one source of it just makes it funnier. Now, onward: this Cadillac, being the best sport/luxury sedan in the world, has a price commensurate with its abilities. This is shocking how, exactly?

  18. Of the Detroit Gang, Sergio is definitely the one walking the finest line as far as tolerance for screwups go. But like Drew said, product-wise they're doing pretty good right now, at least on this side of the pond. By the same token I suppose you could say that necessity is the mother of invention as far as some of their engine options. But I'm still loving my EcoDiesel and the take rate on the Hellcats is nearly as crazy as the cars themselves, so there's that. It all boils down to Yurp. If Fiat/Alfa/Maserati can utilize good platform sharing with the North American operations and thus avoid being a financial black hole, this may yet end well.

  21. Career changes are tricky things. I've had them forced on me and I've done them voluntarily. Both are pretty traumatic. Those of you who've posted with me know that when I started I worked at GM. When the downsizing happened in Oshawa I was one of the lucky ones-after being unemployed a grand total of eight days I would up doing three years of contract work for Ontario Power Generation. After that dried up I wound up moving halfway across the country to Alberta. Five months ago I decided to take a 30% pay cut to start a new career path at my current company. None of that was fun, or easy. The satisfaction of having a position I actually enjoy, on the other hand... totally worth it. But as I said, none of it happened with a simple snap of the fingers. So, for all of you who are contemplating doing what I have done, all I can say is... there will be few dull moments, and the end result may be about as predictable as a Magic 8-Ball. But hey, look on the bright side: at least when you talk about stuff like that in here you don't have to worry about a pair of festering sacks of monkey crap making jokes about whether or not you've killed yourself because of the stress.
