Tesla Model 3 to Debut End of March, Production Late 2016
El Kabong replied to G. David Felt's topic in Tesla
The problem with your counter examples is that they precisely prove my point. Chrysler DID own the minivan segment for nearly a decade, and Ford didn't relinquish its ponycar sales dominance for a long time either. GM will get to market first, with way more experience building cars and a dealer network more than up to the task of moving cars in the required numbers. The Tesla? Debut delays and troubled launch of current product are both very troubling signs. Their insistence on fighting legal battles to sell cars in Michigan will just wear them down even more. They're in huge trouble. -
...and that would be YOUR opinion. Anyhoo, not only does it look different, the price scheme is also much the same. My nearly-loaded '10 SS2 (everything but the auto and sunroof) rang in at 48 grand Canadian back in the day. The one I was in last night had the sunroof, thirty more horses, and a bunch of stuff not even available on mine, for 54. I can live with that.

So today I saw my second and third 2016 Camaros. My first one was a white one, and it was pretty nice. But the black and red ones... well. Just pure, dead sexy. They had a '15 in the showroom for a bit of reference. Yes, trust me-there is a LOT of difference between the two.

They have different configurations-the Bolt is more of a tall-wagon people mover-but I think that the market segment is all Chevy's. -
GM recorded a pre-tax profit of $10.8 billion for 2015.

Only a dedicated hater would downvote a link that doesn't have any accompanying commentary. That alone tells me that this is a good-news kind of story. Well done, GM. -
They overpaid Bulgari for the gauges. But I have fonder memories of the interior, especially in the XLR-V. It was a nice place to do business. Similarly, I don't think that a 440hp V8 was underpowered for a C5 variant. It's just that it's primary conpetition was in-house and a well-established name.

As per the link: "General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) today announced record 2015 calendar-year net income attributable to common stockholders of $9.7 billion, or $5.91 per diluted share, up from $2.8 billion, or $1.65 per diluted share in 2014." In other words, you CAN have world-class product, expand upmarket, AND make world-class money all at the same time. -
The XLR died because it was a Corvette, more or less. Not an enormous investment for Cadillac, but not a good idea. Even BMW largely avoids attacking the Benz SL head on, although I guess a 6-Series Droptop kinda fits the role. The ELR wasn't a missed opportunity so much as it was an opportunity compromised by the fact that it was a trickle-up idea. And it doesn't matter who pushes trickle-up ideas, they rarely work in today's automotive marketplace.

Too high a cost and not enough power too much for the design and fantastic interior to overcome. Too much under the skin commonality with the first-gen Volt too.

Corvette C7.Rs Finish 1-2 In Class At 24 Hours Of Daytona
El Kabong replied to El Kabong's topic in Industry News
No man. These days I'm either working or sleeping. Heard it was pretty epic though-the Corvette boys threw team orders to the wind apparently. -
The groundhog looked around. There were no shadows. Has springtime finally arrived?
-
Good to see, fer sure. A nice (and I staged!) 1-2 photo finish for the team. Good job, Chevy. Link: http://www.gminsidenews.com/articles/corvette-racing-takes-historic-1-2-at-rolex-24/

Cadillac CT6 Review Thread: Post Them ALL Here.
El Kabong replied to Cmicasa the Great's topic in Cadillac
It sounds like a great idea for China, IF they are getting their electricity from Three Gorges or some other hydroelectric project. If it comes from COAL?... not so much. -
Minus the drive, what Frisky describes is pretty much what I got from the time I spent in the '16 SS, although I felt that the lower hood offset the humps on the instrument panel. It's possible that the competence of the chassis takes away some of the drama of driving it. But that's a good problem to have, and can probably be fixed by digging through the settings for steering and whatnot. Or you could wait and see what the 1LE is like. That's my plan.

Ford recorded a pre-tax profit of $10.8 billion for 2015.
El Kabong replied to FordCosworth's topic in Industry News
Lost in all the hype and hoopla of the last few posts is that while Ford didn't declare bankruptcy, they took several billion dollars from the Department of Energy for research. We have discussed this many, many times before. Some companies found good PR ways around the events of '08, some didn't. Some made good use of the second chance, some less so. -

I was told that the Lincoln Continental would start, in FWD trim, at the $50,000 mark. We now know that the Cadillac CT6 will start, in RWD trim, at $54,500. That 4,500 dollar difference is more than made up in the Caddy's chassis tech ALONE. A 3,650 pound luxury yacht? Are you kidding me? And it goes on sale in five weeks, as opposed to the Continental, which will arrive late this year. The Cadillac reviews have been massively good. Only Automobile (which groused about minor switchgear) and Road & Track (which wanted it to be a Miata) were offside. And the China debate at this point is almost laughable. Does anyone really expect a start-up brand (in a slumping economy, no less) to stand a chance against established competition that is serious enough to make a China-primary plug in hybrid version? A while back I caught flak for saying "too little too late for Lincoln." But darned if the CT6 isn't fully prepared to make my words come true. -

There is no price overlap between the two cars at all, I believe. Also, I don't recall GM releasing performance numbers for the TT. But I'm pretty sure it'll smoke quite a few S-class yachts. -

Without singling out any particular competition from anywhere... It would be exceedingly difficult to challenge a car head-on that, when priced at 64 grand has: -a 3.6V6 -AWD -an eight-speed automatic -adjustable and massaging rear seats -weighs in at just around 4,000 pounds. Now, make said car RWD for sunbelt states and take away the BarcaLounger back and you still have the eight speed and even lower weight, despite "only" packing 260hp in his guise. And at that point it only costs 54 grand. This car is gonna make some folks think HARD. -

The critical thing is that the auto journos are getting the message that no, this isn't a faux-German copycat of the S-Class or 7-Series or A8. Rather, what it is is an American luxury car without any excuses, whether in handling, or ride, or engineering efficiency, or styling, or room, or pricing. It is almost like an a la carte chassis: if you want an oversized 5-Series for handling, get the RWD and 260hp for 54 grand and 3700 pounds. If you want a car that will give Lexus nightmares belly up for a Platinum. -

Add two more glowing reviews here: http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews/driven/2016-cadillac-ct6-review/ http://jalopnik.com/the-cadillac-ct6-this-is-it-1694813397 Jalopnik in particular appeared stoked about it, calling it a break from copying the Germans while retaining the dynamics you would expect from them-the best of both worlds. "Resplendent American luxury" were their exact words. And when you can build one online with the 3.6, AWD, reclining rear seats, and eight-speed automatic for 64 grand it's kinda hard to argue that. Truly, a fantastic job by Cadillac.
