Hmm, not in the numbers that Volvo would love right now, but certainly enough to work with. Definitely more than Lincoln, Buick, Acura and even Infiniti. I'll be the first to pay more for a Volvo than a comparable XTS and most likely the Continental too.

Ah someone implicated in dieselgate is being replaced by the head of engine development. Doesn't engine development involve emissions testing and compliance? Oh gee, I wonder if this person is implicated as well? Man I am totally exceeding the joke quota. Dammit, forgive me, Drew!!! Forgive me!!! (Imagine the "forgive me" like a Dalek chanting "Forgive me!!)

Exactly. But it was VW as an organization that was not setting reasonable expectations. Basically Piech ordered for maximum reductions in emissions without a single cent being spared to equip vehicles with the necessary technology and components. GM is probably just building diesels with the efficiency and emissions on par with where VW would have been now or within one calender year if they hadn't cheated, or really had reasonable expectations and an understanding that they can't compromise the vehicle, and certainly can't build it to a price. But I expect the Cruze diesel to be again, limited to the higher trims. They're going to sell the Whisper Diesel like how they sell the Duramax in the Canyonado trucks.

Yes, you're right. I see what you're saying. Volvo will not go toe to toe. But they'll make their own market... Remember the post I made where I said I am a sucker for V8s and RWD? I laugh whenever I make posts trying flesh out an argument for FWD and four cylinders.

I think Tesla, in interest of furthering sales, might just end up having dealerships. It moves the trouble of dealing with short-term demand fluctuations- such as cyclical buy habits and what it does to inventory to the dealers. They're burning cash because they're doing quite a few goodwill building activities for customers. They're giving you way more than just what the purchase price nets, with the free superchargers, and other nicities...some of which they are reneging on in the pursuit of profitability. The thing is, there are enough people in the world that now aspire to own Teslas. Make no mistake, Tesla will extract as much money as they can from the Model X. Squeeze the margins. They're more viable in terms of Electric vehicle sales than anyone else either way. It's not like this vehicle is going to be profitable. It won't be be. It exists first to fulfill a government mandate, and second to lead the affordable segment, for however many precious days it can. Which aren't a lot by the way.

That's exactly what I mean. Styling doesn't matter. The only thing to gush over how is long this EV has an advantage in range and price. My guess, not long at all. In fact, irrelevant, because it'll be going against more competitors that have more well-known EVs. Nissan showed their concept, and they've got a pretty solid EV that's going to launch, probably in a 3-4 month timeframe of this. In any case, other brands are more well-know for EVs, while Chevy is absolutely known for the Volt. Hopefully that same instant recognition rubs off onto it.

What they need is what they sorely lack. Trim's don't change the underlying vehicle, so seeing them gone is good, but not great. Competitive vehicles at a competitive price. With the big hit to diesel, and the fact they're behind everywhere else, shows in their inability to resolve the present issues: How do they make investment into VW products in America worth it? Americans buy everything from the VW Group in huge quantities in the Group other than VW itself. VW Group is going to decline now, and TDI is probably forever tainted. I really want them to do well, I think they're a brand that should. But they're not going to go anywhere by half-assing here in the States or trying to nickel and dime customers based on a antiquated belief of superior German engineering in mass-market segments; the same customers who buy Camcords, Fusibus, and the like.

But they replaced it with something even worse: The dreaded floating roof. Actually, it's not that either look bad. But I find it extremely unconvincing that this is special among all the dopey looking economy-minded automobiles used to extract the very last of the juice that powers them. Whether it be gas or a flow of electrons, it's just another shapeless blob. Right now the technology just isn't to the capability where design is very flexible, where you can have 200 mile range and a succulent exterior for that price It is what it is, and it isn't anything more.

But doesn't the Audi A6 come with FWD as standard (on the 2.0T in the U.S. and many more options in Europe)? It seems to be doing ok. A6 sells about 1,500 cars a month here. Not really setting the US market on fire. It sells huge in China though. So if Volvo hopes to take a bite out of Audi China sales maybe they can do that. Again, sales? Yeah they're the last common denominator along with profitability when it comes to the going concern of the auto company, but this is easily exceeding anything in terms of interior quality and luxury in the midsize flagship sedan segment. And because of bounded rationality and brand loyalties, Volvo's may have a one-hit wonder and yet not turn the industry up-side down. It'd be hard for anyone to do that. In fact, this vehicle represents the Modus Operandus of the upcoming Continental, and if the Buick Lacrosse was a global beyond N/A and China, then that too. Those especially, but everyone else will also be gauged against this as well. Bespoke, brand specific platform, bespoke interior and parts bin and unique powertrains. Sure there's no V8, but I can't imagine Volvo selling many of those anyways. Sometimes it's best to compete in way you know how, not where someone thinks you should. Besides, based off the XC90, Volvo has proven you can have excellence everywhere even with a FWD/AWD platform in the luxury space. They didn't compromise, and they didn't just execute by taking something else and changing it. It's wholly unique. Besides, in China they tax the hell out of displacement.

I guess one thing that makes this confusing is the sole advocate of the name change's name. You can have a name that is derogatory in nature and can be easily regarded as offensive.. but "Burnt Valve(enter engine here)" is worse? ..jus' say'n.. One question. is this a random or persistent thought? If it's persistent, please pm more about this to me or Drew. I can happily explain why and when. Otherwise I don't want anymore of this the invade the last thread I want to go off track. Random thoughts are not persistent ones.

Look at the visual trickery though. That's a pretty meaty dash to axle. My thoughts? Lack of RWD isn't going to stop Volvo from winning industry accolades, and XC90 is off to a running start. Volvo is a known quantity. They enjoy one of the best loyalties too. In this sense: when Volvo produces excellent vehicles, people don't fuss, they buy the Volvo. They're still a niche player, but based off this and the XC90, they're the benchmark for the niche and up-and-coming luxury brands trying to break out. And look at this again, Volvo gets to use its SPa platform exclusively from Geely, atleast for a good long-time.

ATP does nothing to tell you the range between the highest and lowest priced units for a specific product. Your base price can go up, and at the same time the ATP can be the same, because you can just get rid of low-end trims that wouldn't sell anyways. There is nothing wrong with raising base prices for a new model generation. Besides, having a higher price of entry in many cases can allow manufacturer to build a base model that is built to a specific content level, not to a price floor. Like how Honda doesn't sell DX trims in the U.S. anymore.- 27 replies

The part of user names being out of accordance with forum etiquette is called a signature violation. I'm all for freedom of expression but you can't have a user name that becomes a snide insinuation in any circumstance. It becomes immediately obvious when a post is created by the same person that is an assertion in line with the user name. Besides, if such user names were reciprocated throughout the forum, there would be no semblance of a community. See like this, this is a great head2head in another industry that is a good example. Username: Coca-cola induced cancer Thread: Coca-cola vs Pepsi Post: Pepsi makes Coca-cola taste like crude oil. You see?! As an analogy. I hate coca-cola, (well, Pepsi too). I hope they burn like highly volatile hydrocarbons. If I was a member for a forum for soft drinks, and my only interest was to participate in topics concerning the two, it would seem like I was to dog coca-cola that whole time. I don't think I'd get any favours from other posters or mods to see to my cause.
