York is Resigning GM Board - Kirk not buying more
drew770 replied to bdubsee's topic in General Motors
Why in the hell does it always take an outsider to cut costs. Yes, GM can still cut costs but I haven't heard not 1 good suggestion from FoxNews Business experts, CNBC or Jim Cramer about how GM can solve it's legacy costs problems. So Mr. Cramer, how do GM cut health care cost and pension payouts???? Do we dump UAW and shift all the work to China and Mexico? Most of these so called business experts (jerks) would want to GM to kick UAW to the curb and shift all manufactoring to China if they got their way. -

Why would you support a group of people that wanted to sell GM and it's history to the highest bidder!!! GM would have gotten nothing from this so called alliance and if you supported it then you were just as blind by money as KK and York. For someone that Loves GM then you have a funny way of showing it. I want to see an independant GM that relies on American know how to get things done!!!!! Not foreigners that have no idea of GM's glorious history. Alliance was a no go from the start and KK and York could have done alot of good for GM if they wanted to work within!!! -
Besides for the obvious Saab wagons I think both Saturn and Chevy could pull off a reasonable wagon. But wouldn't it be nice if Caddy would offer a super luxury wagon to compete with BMW and Mercedes and finally 1 up Lexus???
-
I really like the Aura but the more I see of it in pictures the less impressed with the interior I get. I guess because GM seem to be using this same centerstack in everyone of their new vehicles that the interior has lost some unigueness. I still say that the benchmarks of interior are still the sales leaders Camry and Accords.

The bottom line is the car should sell itself during the commericals no matter what jingle or song you have in the background. Lexus didn't get on top by playing Elvis, Snoop Dogg, The Doors or anyother group during commericals. If Caddy wants to be a big dog than it needs to act like a big dog and get with the program and kick it up a notch. That's how you sell cars not jingles and songs!
-
There is no need for rappers or old school rockers to sell Caddys. The car/suvs should sell themselves during the commercial. No other luxury brand has to stoop to jingles or theme songs to push products, so Caddy shouldn't either. Lexus are selling like gangbusters and what song do they use in their commericals?

Yes, the G35 is a good value but that market segment is the toughest out there and the Infiniti comes up short compared to BMW, Lexus and Acura. Now the next gen G35 will be rocking just like the NG CTS but both current models are not the tops.
-
I don't think the BMW is overrated, hell it is a great drive even though it has a fugly interior. I might be the only person but I think the Infiniti G35 is overrated. Interior is cheap and the exterior is tired. And with personal experience the quality levels is not up to anywhere near Lexus levels. But the automotive press loves the G35 dirty underwear!!!!

GM tell Nissan to buy the US plants! You need the money and it would save R-N millions to just buy an existing plant and just retrofit it for Nissan products. You don't need an alliance for that. Also, who says you need to own shares in each other for an alliance. We have an alliance with BMW on hybrid technonlogy and I don't see us owning anything that is BMW. No ownership shares should change hands in this alliance. If GM wants an alliance with an automaker for technology purposes then BMW, Honda or even VW is a better partner than R-N. You want as little overlap as possible and the last time I checked Nissan has damn near the same products as Chevy!!!

I just had to opportunity to rent a G6 (1787 miles on the odometer) for a week in Houston. I have to say I was pleasantly surpraised at how good a vehicle it was. Would I buy one? That I don't know. The G6 still did not feel as solid as the Honda Accord but it was a great driver even in Pothole Capital Houston. What was very strange was the air conditioning was not as good as I would have thought for a GM car. Houston is hot and humid and a good air condition is a valued necessity and the G6 air condition was not very strong. Hopefully it was just my car but that was alittle annoying. But overall I think the G6 is miles better than the Grand Am and should be on peoples short list for midsize cars.

The problem with that is even though Nissan has only a small percent of market share in America it is the most profitable market. Nissan would not want to give technology to GM so that the Malibu could directly compete with the Altima and Nissan is on a push to broaden its brand with more trucks, suvs and other segments to BETTER COMPETE WITH CHEVY AND TOYOTA! So will Nissan simply give up the HD Titan for Chevy's sake? Will it slow the redesign of the Maxima in order to let Chevy debut the RWD Impala? I highly doubt that Nissan would slow, cut or modify any production plans for GM in this newly formed Alliance. If this was Renault only then we can say there will be no product overlap and the possiblity to swap technology would be great but Nissan wants to become a full brand like Toyota, Ford and Chevy and this deal just puts a crimp in their plans. This alliance is DOA. Honda and GM yes because Honda has no desire to be an everything brand for all!

GM has to convince KK and York that if they would have some patience the GM turnaround is working. For the most part sales has stablized but KK did this to see Wagoner gone. And as far as right now Wagoner has the support of the board so GM might have a life line.
-
GM might not be able to tell shareholders what to do but they can recommend and alot of GM's shareholders are institutions and not individuals. CALPERS is a huge investor and Wagoner will need to express that GM is heading down the right path now without the help of Euro/Japanese influence. Wagoner will also have to let the institutional investor know that this deal will only disrupt the current turnaround!

The day that Toyota becomes the #1 automaker the press will be in glory. Another failed American company that couldn't compete with foreigners. I really think America is the only country on Earth that always cheer for others and not ourselves. We are so selfishly consumed with our cheap foreign Walmart goods that we tend to forget that we are putting Americans out of work and we are forcing manufactorers to outsource because we want cheap and fast in this country. Now, we are getting stuck with Toyotas and we love Toyota dirty underwear because they are foreign and has a preception of quality even though quality has been slipping lately. We will never learn until our economy is completely service jobs and we are all serving burgers at Burger King.

The New York Times might be the standard of newspapers of the past but now it has shown it's true colors by being anti-american, anti-christians, anti-big business and anti-republicans. If you want to be a true newspaper I would think you would want to express the views of all American not just New York Liberals.

Glory days oh Glory days. GM can't justify all these brands while they are still losing market share. A smart company would pull resources to improve products but not GM. They have to give a little here and there just to prop up all these brands. Would I like to see any of them go the way of Oldsmobile? No but I don't see GM doing a good job at separating each brand into it's own unigue status. If Buick is suppose to compete with Lexus then they are doing a pretty piss poor job at it. The Lucerne just got beat by a Hyundai so the idea of competing with Lexus is a joke. Hell, Caddy is still not up to Lexus status yet! Why do folks think that GM needs a whole brand just to compete with a car from a competitor? Caddy is a Luxury brand and they should be able to compete with all luxury brands BMW, Mecedes, and Lexus. GM doesn't need Buick to do what a full Caddy lineup should do. If people want GM to compete with the Chrysler 300 then give Chevy a nice RWD Impala and call it a day. Plus, why do you need an Excitment Division when Chevy gets an SS version to every car and truck on the lot? If folks would just realize that if GM spent the resources on Chevy and Caddy instead of Buick and Pontiac, what type of vehicles could be in the pipeline? Instead of the Buick Enclave the Caddy Enclave with more Luxury and a V version for the hell of it. Even a convertible hardtop of the CTS coupe instead of wasting $$ on a Pontiac. But, as a shareholder of GM depressed stock, I am well aware of each brands history but times have changed and with more competition coming from China on the horizon, I think it is time for GM to make some hard decisions about the viability of each brand.
-
This is a great idea only if Pontiac have at least one of their vehicles exclusive to Pontiac. Chevy does not need everything that Pontiac has and visa versa. But, needs to fast track this plan because Pontiac is only limping along and the Solstice will not save the brand.
-
Only GM does the name flip flops! The STS and CTS type of monikers are fine for Caddy if they want to attract import loving Americans but I don't see the reasoning to changing Grand Am to G6 or Sunfire to G5. Who do GM think they are fooling!! A Camry was a Camry 10 years ago and will be a Camry 20 years from now. An Accord will be the same. Look how long the Corolla has been around. If GM would make the freaking car correct the first time then they wouldn't have to try to change names on a vehicle to get folks to forget the past pieces of junk. But leave it to GM to name a car after a milk brand!! Lucerne!
-
The way to silence these silly know nothing critics is for GM to rebound and to rebound hard. The press and Wall Street want GM to fail so they can say another American company bites the dust because it could not compete with the Japanese. Well, GM has to do a better job at selling it's good points and not always harping on the bad. GM needs to make some hard decisions about the long term viablity of each brand and product development. GM has to move beyond being just a SUV and Truck company to a company that can offer consumers reliable, safe, fuel efficient and technology advanced cars as well as Trucks.
-
I say give it GM's black tie radio and then the interior will look pretty nice. Well, at least better than the current Malibu.
-
I know GM is hard up for money but Trucks is what GM is good at. And the idea that the Colorado is having poor sales is sad for a Chevy. But, I still say that this is a self inflicted wound. The Toyota nor the Frontier is so great (ala Camry or Accord) that a fairly significant upgrade would not improve sales. Have you noticed that Lutz nor Wagoner never talks about these trucks. They almost seem forgotten. Well, they shouldn't be and GM needs to get their act together or the Imports will take this market segment for good!
-
To bad about the poor fuel economy for such a small car plus there are rumors of horrible crash test results!! I'm afraid if this true then the Aveo is DOA.
-
I agree but I think the Colorado is a turd and GM screwed themselves with this vehicle. Sales of the Tacoma and Fontier is proving that GM didn't do anyone any favors with the I-5, poor interior and 90's exterior styling. All GM has to do is look at how the Foreign competition is doing and see what they offer in there small/midsized trucks! The Truck is GM's game and because GM wanted to do the Colorado on the cheap we are stuck with a loser for years to come.
-
The losses should narrow a bit more when the Aura, Outlook and the Vue Hybrid comes onto the market but I still think that the upsurge in gas prices will put a crimp on the GMT 900 SUV sales. But, I believe that when the Silverado debuts GM will finally swing into profitablity but not by much because the passenger car side of the house is so weak that GM will not be able to get traction on the sliding market share.
-
Using the Kappa platform for Saab is fine as long as GM really differentiate and I mean really differentiate the versions. Saab should be a Saab and not some American version with a ignition key near the gear box! As far as Caddy getting a version, I say let's wait to see what GM does with the CTS and it's off springs such as a coupe and convertible.
