  1. And what if this conspiracy theory is true and Japan wants to take over the US economy by driving GM out of business? If this were to happen, Toyota and Honda would lose their single largest and most profitable market. Toyota and Honda need the US to have a prosperous economy in order to remain prosperous themselves. Toyota and Honda are opening plants all over North America. Their suppliers are opening more and more plants in North America to support them. These plants are hiring more and more Americans. Competition is good. It improves products and lowers prices...both excellent things for the consumer. If GM can't compete, they should find an industry in which they can compete.
  2. While I would have to do some minor research to refute your Maybach claim (and I highly doubt the "20 years" claim), I can argue the Bugatti part. Artioli never claimed that the "new" Bugatti company was the continuation of the old company, just a continuation of the name itself. And the connection to the Bugatti name is direct....Artioli bought the name from Messier-Bugatti, the company that the original automaker became. As an automotive historian, I'm the first to argue against historical inaccuracies. But Artioli made a connection between his company and Ettore's company, but never said it was the same company...only the same name. Like I said before, the EB110 does the Bugatti name proud. The car was extreme (held the record for top speed in a production car), had a great design (without being "retro"), and was a quality product fitting the Bugatti name...and wasn't a "corporate" product. The Veyron does much the same...but I have a small problem with Veyron pistons being related to those found in the lowly Lupo.
  3. There are some interesting choices in there (Grand Master Flash among them) and some things that I'm sure the seller was just happy to get off of his hands. I had this Steve Martin album...on 8-Track. It's a classic, along with "Let's Get Small" (which I have on CD) and "The Steve Martin Brothers" (a must-have on vinyl).

  7. It's not like Artioli just decided to revive the Bugatti name. He had to buy it from an active company that was already using it. Ettore Bugatti's company was folded into another company and eventually became part of an engineering firm making, among other things, aircraft parts. Artioli purchased the rights to the Bugatti name for his automotive use. The EB110 was a valid use of the Bugatti name. As for Maybach, it's a similar story. Maybach was folded into Daimler-Benz many decades ago. It was their name to use and the Maybach 57 and 62 are, again, valid uses of the name. Nothing stolen...it was theirs. History's more interesting when you know the story.
  8. This one I do not understand at all. I'm glad you're not working on my cars. Simply put, overdrive is a gear with a ratio numerically less than 1:1. Most 4-speed automatics have ONE overdrive gear.

  13. It was the Civil War....even 12 year olds could have fought. Lincoln was created by Leland and Ford saved it from bankruptcy. On the other hand, the Henry Ford Company was taken over by Leland when Ford left and it became....Cadillac. You should more than "consider" SAH. I've been a member for quite a while. And a very active one at that.

  19. Henry Leland (no "y" in the name) would have been 17-18 at the start of the Civic War...plenty old enough to fight in the war. And I do know there are biographies of him. Henry Ford was one of the founders of the company that would become Cadillac (ever notice how similar the Ford Model A and the Cadillac Model A look?). So Henry Ford and Henry Leland were key in creating BOTH Cadillac and Lincoln. Balthazar: You know automotive history...but are you in the Society of Automotive Historians?

  21. There are two Shelby GLH-S for sale in Hemmings right now. One for $8,000 and one for $10,000. Neither is outrageously priced.

  23. After looking through some pictures, like this one... Buick Century ...I agree. It's the EARLIER A-body Century not the later one.
  24. I don't see why safety would be a negative. The Aries/Reliant bodies were built in the old-school American style. They were tough and strong bodies (trust me...I tested mine). It was a very safe car. And the primary reason to get an E-Body over a K-body would be to get the extra rear seat/trunk space, since they are nearly identical from the B-pillar forward. I always liked the 600ES (5-speed manual sedan) and the New Yorker Turbo. There were no Shelby K-Cars. The GLH ("goes like hell") package was offered on the Omni. Dodge Shelby packages were offered on the Rampage, Charger, and Daytona, and Shelby packages were offered on the Omni (GLH-S), Charger (GLH-S), Lancer, Shadow (CSX), and Dakota...none of which were K-Cars. You've obviously never driven any of these cars. They were great basic transportation in their Dodge forms (and far from the POS you believe them to be)...and the GLH (and especially the GLH-S) were really fun to drive...and getting to be valuable as well.
