  1. Aside from Lotus, I don't see any reason for GM to buy Proton. Between Chinese joint-ventures, GM India, GM DAT, and Holden, GM has enough resources in Asia without the need for another troubled automaker under the GM umbrella. And the only reason to pick up Lotus is for its engineering resources, which Proton needs and most likely will not part with. GM needs to avoid this one.
  2. But the Chevrolet Volt (Voltz was a Toyota badged Pontiac Vibe) is not ground-breaking. And I truly believe that there was some sort of "backlash" that made the Aura win that award...I don't feel that the Aura deserved the win.Much of the buzz from NAIAS was pro-domestics, but by default. Ford made many announcements as did GM and Chrysler...and the import-brands were relatively quiet.
  3. I'll gladly take the tough ones...and since someone else started using partial numbers... Dacia 1300
  4. I have enjoyed ABC Cars around the world through many turns of the alphabet. How about COUNTING by car names? I'll start... Fiat UNO
  5. It got worse....they screwed up Nightline as well. Did you know that CHEVROLET was planning on importing Cherys to the US?
  6. I agree that labor is only part of the equation, but Japan and South Korea entered the US market because their labor costs were low enough to overcome shipping and tariff problems and STILL underprice the compeition. The reason you don't see $20k BMWs and Cadillacs in China is due to other costs. In China, there are tariffs on imported parts. Wholly Chinese vehicles are extremely cheap to build which is why Geely and Chery and others can make inexpensive cars. Brilliance imports quite a few BMW parts and SAIC does the same with Cadillac parts to make those cars. While the local assembly of the 5-Series or CTS is inexpensive, the cost of the imported parts wipe out much of the benefit. If BMWs and Cadillacs were entirely sourced from Chinese plants, they would be less expensive. As it stands now, a Toyota Prius built in Japan and sold in the US is priced around $22k...the same car built and sold in China runs around $44,000.
  7. Suddenly the press isn't bias? C'mon! While GM may have deserved the Silverado...they "bought" the Aura award.
  8. With the rise of internet shopping, buying a used car isn't far from buying a new car. But in anycase, my parameters apply equally to new or used cars.
  9. Then it's not a "dealbreaker."I read the concept of this thread as an automatic repulsion...something that could not be overcome. And I think that many of the things posted on this thread so far do not fall into that category. There are precious few things (to me) that would eliminate a vehicle from consideration. "Slow" is a relative term. For me, my primary driver must be "fun to drive" (another relative and subjective term). All of my vehicles have fallen into this category from my 50hp car to my current 200hp car. I'd say that having an automatic would be a dealbreaker, but I have considered cars with automatics (even owned one), so that doesn't fall into this category. I don't care about number of doors or colors (there are colors I avoid, but none would be a dealbreaker). I don't count number of cylinders (I've considered three-bangers up to V12s) or drive wheels (I've owned and loved FWD, RWD, and AWD cars). I stay away from SUVs and pickups (the typically lack the FTD guality I look for), but I can't really rule any body style out either.
  10. I'm sure I'll brush into you again...like last year as we entered one of the Ford intros.
  11. I'll be there on the 7th, 8th, and 9th. Anyone else?
  12. This thread got me thinking. What makes you stick with a manufacturer? Did that make you rule out all other manufacturers? What would your manufacturer of choice (assuming the dealer does everything right) have to do to lose you? What would another manufacturer have to do to get you to shop there? In my driving career, I've never purchased a vehicle based on my past experiences. I have no allegience to any brand or manufacturer so I'd like to know what makes you like your company over all others. Please try to provide something more than "my family has always been a GM family."

  14. I don't remember if the Rapier is a hardtop (no b-pillar). (I'm pushing the limits a bit with this one, but I always loved these cars) American Underslung.
  15. While it could cover the next two letters, I'll just claim "R". Rapier, Sunbeam Rapier.
  16. Not at all. There are three (I count the Chrysler Group) domestic manufacturers and there are more than a dozen manufacturers based in other countries selling their wares in the US. When the domestic industry is outnumbered like that, you've got to assume that there will be more import brands introducing new products than domestic brands. "Car of the Year" and "Truck of the Year" awards are usually based on what is new or significantly improved that year. How many new cars can GM, Ford, and Chrysler put out in one year? And wouldn't that number pale in comparison to the number introduced by all of the other companies? Now you're at a loss in sheer numbers of introductions, what are the odds that one of the other companies introduced something more dramatically better in its segment than the Big 3 did? I'll state it again, I believe the winners should be the Camry and the Silverado this year...they are much better than the other choices.
  17. Some really nice choices. Invicta
