  1. Actually, there are probably more than 50 manufacturers around the world today...and probably another 100 more assemblers.
  2. This one's bothering me. I thought of one that's been sold by no fewer than 10 manufacturers but not all of them were offered turbocharged...and they were assembled by three or four (maybe more) manufacturers. Are these four "manufacturers" or marketing brands? The "manufacturer" that no longer exists is completely out of business, stopped making/selling vehicles, or not selling/making vehicles for the US?
  3. To my thinking, those were all made by the same manufacturer...and SOLD by the same manufacturer, albeit under four different brands. Pontiac and Oldsmobile never offered turbocharged versions.

  5. I'm pretty sure that the 1953 model was produced in Flint, Michigan. Production moved to St. Louis for the 1954 model year.
  6. I wrote an article one time on the post-WWII history of the Duesenberg brand. There were no fewer than three "production" Duesenbergs including the 1959 (built by a nephew of the original Duesenbergs) and the 1966. There was also a rebodied late 1970s Cadillac badged as a Duesenberg (can't tell you how many, if any, were sold). And, of course, the truck-based Duesenberg II.
  7. Here's an easy one from my photo collection.
  8. The Monteverdi Hai ("Shark") was powered by a mid-mounted Chrysler Hemi 426cid/450hp V8. I always liked Monteverdis, especially the 375 sedan, for some reason.

  10. I can understand the comments about Isuzu, they are barely here to begin with. I don't know if anyone (including the few dealers left) would care if they stopped selling light-duty vehicles. I don't really understand why anyone buys a Colorado or Canyon when you can buy the equivalent (IF that equivalent is available) is offered at an Isuzu dealer for less money and with a better warranty. But, again, who would miss the Ascender or I-Series? Mitsubishi I have more of a problem with. The Eclipse is a fun car. The Galant is a better car than many of the bland mid-sized cars offered. The Lancer is a very nice compact. Why would you like to lose these guys? If they left the market, not many people would notice, but something would be missing. Suzuki is profitable and makes interesting products. As a Suzuki car (not truck) owner, I understand the appeal and I'm sure that most people (here and otherwise) have never experienced an Suzuki four-wheeled product. Their trucks aren't bad vehicles (even though I'm not a truck person) and their cars offer inexpensive and good quality (no matter what the surveys may tell you) choices. My car was rated as the second-lowest quality brand when I purchased it...and 15 years later it's still running great, getting great gas mileage, and honestly fun to drive. I can't make good arguments for Mercury or Buick or Pontiac or Kia or many other brands mentioned above. Kia's profitable and offers more choices to the buying public at reasonable price/quality levels. Buick and Pontiac offer interesting products but I can't say that they're profitable or highly desirable to the buying public. And I'm not entirely sure why Mercury wasn't killed a decade ago. I agree with Moltar that if all (or any) of the tiny manufacturers (Aston Martin, Maserati, Ferrari, Lamborghini, etc) left, the marketplace would be a much less colorful place. They're not hurting anyone, especially if you can't afford them so why should they be on anyone's list? If the measure of the marketplace crowding is the fact that buyers are getting confused, I don't see this as a problem with overcrowding as much as homogenization. If the buyer confuses two vehicles, there's not enough differentiation and that's the manufacturer's fault. Make products unique. Differentiate your mid-sized sedans from the competition. Mitsubishi has tried...and they've made nearly everyone's list. Suzuki attempted (by selling that underpowered Daewoo)...and again they've made many lists. Scion and Smart and Suzuki have offered unique small cars and again they've made many lists. Are you guys desiring more homogenization? Would you like "Generic Car" brands and models? Customer: "Yes, I'm here to buy a Car." Walmart Salesperson: "No problem. We offer Car in Small, Medium, and Large models. The price is marked by the UPC label."
  11. Willow Run is not making vehicles. Are you sure that the other two were built in Oshawa?
  12. I don't believe the market is overcrowded. I'm all for MORE choice.

  17. Chris:I never said that I had good taste, did I?
  18. Have you actually SEEN Chris, Harry? He ain't "all that and a bag of chips." He's nothing to sneeze at, but HE is your crush? Really? I can probably find you more amenable straight guys if you're into that.
  19. Looks aside, the car's not going to happen as described. There are far too many things that will NEED to be changed before it could possibly go on sale in the US. It won't have suicide doors. The engine will need to be redesigned or else it won't survive more than a few thousand miles. It will most definitely need catalytic converters (probably four) unless it's not running on gasoline or diesel (a loophole in the American emissions laws). With the claims of 1,200hp, I wonder what they consider to be "excellent gas mileage." I've debunked many pipe dreams such as this before. As someone who's looked into manufacturing my own designs, I've learned what definitely won't work...and this car's loaded with them. Welcome to the party already attended by Cizeta, Vector, Cunningham, Packard, etc.
  20. These "outdated tests" have been updated TWICE in the past 20 years, most recently for the 2008 model year. A while back, they ran the tests and then lowered the numbers by 10% and 22% (if I remember correctly) the city and highway figures. So the figures for 2007 tests are significantly lower than what they would have been in the late 1980s. And for 2008, they'll be even lower.Just because a person or a magazine doesn't get close to the EPA ESTIMATES doesn't mean there's something wrong with the figures. EPA figures are based on all cars running on the same route so that the average consumer can compare two vehicles. If you drive a Civic Hybrid harsh (the way most magazine writers do), you're not going to come close to the EPA estimates. If you drive the Civic Hybrid like it's supposed to be driven, you'll get OUTSTANDING gas mileage. But you do have to modify your driving slightly. You wouldn't drive a Ferrari the way you'd drive a Lincoln Town Car (and vice versa), why should it be any different if you're trying to drive for gas mileage? You can drive a Prius or Civic Hybrid (or ANY hybrid) and get amazing gas mileage, but you can't beat on it like most Americans drive. I don't see any of this as bad publicity for Honda. It's bad publicity for the American legal system if anything.

  22. I've seen that Mercury Meteor before...at two different shows. I've got pictures of one here... www.carspace.com/hudsonthedog
