2006 NAIAS: 2007 Ford Edge
mphmag replied to Northstar's topic in North American International Auto Show in Detroit (NAIAS)
I just looked through the window. The interior is almost identical to the Fusion in many ways. The fusion I do not like inside. Its those darn hard plastics. but in this application, meaning an suv, it isn't as egregious a thing and there is another small step up in quality from the fusion here but it is the very little things most won't notice. I dont' understand how anyone wouldnt' go buy the CX-7 over this. How is mazda building these awesome interiors and Ford isn't? weird. -
Maybe NOW do you understand what the GTO needed?
mphmag replied to funkypunnk's topic in Heritage Marques
I think, and many here have said it before, the new GTo was actually designed just right. it looked like a sleeper. just like the original. There are NO design cues you'd want to keep from the original. The fact that the original became a muscle car icon was a mistake to begin with. I never liked the new GTo's ride and characteristics. it was just too brutish. of course it won the MPH challenge versus the Charger and Mustang a while back because of that I think with this new Zeta Light platform we might get a more refined (one would hope!) GTO. Do they need one after the camaro? I dunno. Why would you buy a GTo over a camaro with presumably the same engine? -
NAIAS: The Web editor's take
mphmag replied to mphmag's topic in North American International Auto Show in Detroit (NAIAS)
I think the Rapide is a great idea, they just need to get the proportions/size right. the enclave interior looked fantastic, and again real! that's the most mindblowing. I'm not sure about the front, animal haunch look but the back end is very attractive. It'll do well if it comes out. I am nto happy with the Lacrosse and lucerne though. Buick should be happy Saab would be the first on the chopping block (sales block) it seems to give them time to improve. -
Hey guys. A few thougths of the show to follow on CD's post. Overall I thought the show was jsut jampacked with good stuff. It was so busy I didn't leave the press room much as the MPH guys just came back with more stuff for me to upload! When I was on the floor I was actually happy cobo is so small. i could do a whole round of shots and back upstairs in about 40 minutes. The production stuff I'm most excited about: Ford Edge and Mazda CX-7. The Mazda will probably be our next car if the turbo i4 can deliver decent power. The interior is the best mazda has made yet, a step over the miata. GM is getting so much better on the interiors. The new Tahoe is going to be big. i saw 3 driving around town too. all in that gold color. The escalade looks great in person. It will do really well. Lincolns did not look good. they need to do something with those grills, the chrome looks fake. the aston martin Rapide is too big and misproportioned in person. The volvo c30 could easily outsell the GTI if it performs as well. I want a Porsche Cayman, I want a Porsche Cayman, I want a Porsche Cayman, I want a Porsche Cayman, I want a Porsche Cayman, I want a Porsche Cayman, I want a Porsche Cayman. I'll take an Audi S6 too but the Q7 interior seemed a bit off from Audi's norm. Kind of cheap to the touch for that price. The Acura RDX looks better in person and I disagree with CD on that one. More importantly though is if that turbo i4 (acura's first) goes to the next RSX! which it probably will. will the SH-AWD? hubba hubba. The superchief was too much for me but you're basically looking at the next f-250. Ford had a 475 hp mustang and mustang convertible and almost no one noticed. they should have unveiled the price to get some headlines. The Challenger would have been overlooked completely after the camaro was unveiled if it hadn't leaked to the internet early. Of course it was on the cover of ever magazine too (including ours). It is pretty badass though. I still don't get why people buy hyundai's or kia's. They still don't compare to a toyota, honda or mazda in the touch test. if ford of gm could build a good new economy car they could win back something from the koreans. Nissan and Chrysler seem to be slipping. DCX's wrangler was good but the compass? ugh. the imperial was just dumb. Star of the show? duh, camaro. I agree with the 18 months to production someone else mentioned. Not from any inside news but Ford rolled out the production mustang a year after the concept. GM can do the same. Plus the platform is already a go for holden. and it just looked so ready in person. that interior is hot. they just need to figue out the mirrors otherwise leave it be. I can't think of anything else right now. Feel free to ask.

2006 NAIAS: Lincoln MKX
mphmag replied to Northstar's topic in North American International Auto Show in Detroit (NAIAS)
in person the grill is horrible. If someone didn't tell you or you were a joe that didn't know cars you would not know it is related to the edge. the Escalade looks so much better in person this looks worse and it looks bad in black. The Enclave is much much biger. It is the Explorer size not the MKX size. And while Ford may have been overdone at the show by Gm's Camaro it released the Edge which will sell a ton! and a real 475 hp mustang and vert. So ummm...they're not as flashy but didn't have a bad show. The inside of the edge is very nice, much better done than the Fusion. Although I don't like the modular look of the center stack. The CX-7 was awesome inside. That will probably be our next vehicle whenever this F'in Jeep's lease is up. POS. -
Nissan I think is doing the worst job of all the Japanese. The interiors aren't being updated to nicer materials even if the layout is better. It's weird. the versa was so cheap in comparison to the fit and Yaris. And everything feels light. I'm really unimpressed and they fall way down the list for me. Although supposedly they're making that URGE.

it was the same in detroit Walt. Cnn was in front of us But for the website. Cnn/Money And they knew what they were talking about just thought they had the wrong coverage angles. Didn't know about the camaro coming out until the day of. Glad to be home. What did you guys think of the coverage? Honestly I am now turning around to GM products. I always liked ford since I've owned 3 and never had one problem (and dig the new mustang). But the Tahoe. Let me just say those center stack buttons are awesome. it might sound stupid to say but they make the car. It's REALLY like a european car now, not like the cadillacs etc of the past. If they can do that with EVERY vehicle they're gonna be in good shape. PLus the Enclave and Camaro concepts were so solid it was crazy. They looked ready for production. nothing looked fake. unlike the lincoln MKS. Overall the show was the busiest I've been to. And had the best line-up of production ready, important vehicles. I see the VW Eos, Tahoe, Cayman, Santa Fe, Edge, CX-7 and Fit selling a ton. I like the fit interior a bit better than the new Civic's. bo9th are nice though. And the RDX looks better in person. ok back to work.

Hey guys, I'm here if you want to say hi. The Hummer converible concept by ASC was pretty cool. If it is a true "drop-in" custom job I wouldn't see why dealers wouldn't offer it. The Dodge Viper thing was atrocious. Can't wait until the Camaro debuts. I don't care if the surprise was ruined (although poor bob probably does.)

2006 NAIAS: 2007 Ford Edge
mphmag replied to Northstar's topic in North American International Auto Show in Detroit (NAIAS)
man Northstar said you'd want interior pics! none were given man. But we'll have em up as live shots first thing tomorrow. They might release some more images before then too. But overall I think this is awesome for Ford. it will sell really well. -
well I do wonder how they're gonna make a base model under $20K to compete with the Mustang. But I'm sure they'll meet the price. they've done it with everything else. I doubt it would have the turbo 4. they'd have to put a 6 in it.
-
it just kicks ass. I hope it handles more like the Solstice and less like the GTO though. All that GTO name dropping ont he video scared me. I did not like that car. And not just cause I crashed one into a tree.
-
Yeah leave him alone! awesome job.
-
maybe tomorrow. $h! What a pain. I didn't even know I was staying her til I typed in my mapquest this morning. travel agent said "it's only a mile from cobo" I'm staying in , watching the game, working oh well. hopefully tomorrow or more likely monday I'll get to party. Still lots of work to do.
-
just watched the video. this thing is what? built on the gto platform? has the same 6 speed as the gto? I hate that transmission! argh. Hope this thing is more nimble. plus now that Ford has upped the hp ante with the new cobra(more than anyone thought) it has to have 400 hp when it launches so it's SS can bump up high enough to comepte. but then it'll get close to the Z06. holy crap the horsepower wars are escalating.

don't expect R&T to get any exclusive with GM cars for awhile. hehe I just had the worst burger in my entire life at the Windsor Radisson. I couldnt even eat half. I think that's a first for me. 4 more hours til embargo party woohoo.
-
sorry guys I posted something under NAIAS before seeing this. Sorry northstar. Anyway autoblog has a pic up still. R&T no longer has the video up. so this is what I was saying the thing is majorly hot. I gotta go eat. will discuss when i get back.

but does everyone see the leaked camaro shot over on Autoblog? Road and track put up a video two days early I guess. I can't find the video now but Autoblog still has the shot of it up. it is so sexy. sigh. damn them. we can't break embargos. they get all the free traffic, I'm shocked GM isn't all over that. -
I told you guys Caliber and Wrangler were winners and the aspen and compass losers. This is horrible. I'm liking the Tahoe more and more.
-
for the challenger or the Bettys? Glad you enjoyed either way.

we uploaded wallpapers of it from the Feb issue. http://www.mph-online.com/web/news/00253 a bit more "fun" than most.
