2006 NAIAS: 2007 Ford Edge
mphmag replied to Northstar's topic in North American International Auto Show in Detroit (NAIAS)
I think I've stated I've sat in one. Driven one. tested the Mercury version for a week and have the fusion coming for a week next week. I just don't get how you sit in that interior and see it as anything superior to something like the G6. It's certainly not better than the dated Mazda6. Which I prefer to all 3. Is it better than the Taurus? Of course. But that's not hard. I'm waiting for Ford to take a leap with their interiors to at least match the quality and feel of Mazda. Maybe we'll have to wait for their next gen vehicles... -

man how come no one ran something on it?weird. I totally missed it. But i wasn't on the floor much. maybe it wasn't out for press days?

I'm pretty sure you're looking at totals from 04 to 05 not month to month which I thought they, DCX, themselves said was slowing. That's why they're putting out all these new "packages" that save you money on options etc. Which I think is a good idea and shows a better way to sell than big red tag events. just a different way to keep interest. I wasn't saying it was a major slowdown or anything like that. they're still selling very well.

again you guys are daft. besides the Accord that's where the G6 should be. The GLI was a great ride and really impressed me, numbers don't mean squat when you're flying around Chicago in that sucker, paddle shifting and all. The Mazdaspeed6 is just great even if the design is a few years old now. And the TSX supposedly got a nice refresh and has more standard equipment than you can option out on any of the others (an Acura trait). I drove a TSX a few years back and got a bad tester so I can't really speak to it too much but I sure wanted the transmission to move in 2nd, it didn't do anything it turned out. But that was the fault of some idiot journo before me not Acura. But Eddie loves the TSX! and I don't think it is just because of the Acura nameplate. The g6 is one of my favorite GM cars and I think with a few changes here and there it could be a lot better. But it's not made to compete with any of these besides the base models. And in the base model realm I really like the G6 for the price, esp w/the V6 edition. But don't fool yourselves and think you're getting a "performer" there. It's a commuter. And a really good looking one.

2006 NAIAS: 2007 Ford Edge
mphmag replied to Northstar's topic in North American International Auto Show in Detroit (NAIAS)
please post an interior shot and point out the squishy parts cause I'm lost in translation here guys. It is not a great interior. It isn't bad. It competes with the G6 but doesn't blow anyone away. -
Guys, forget this thread. Regardless of the future of the camaro this platform is heading straight for OZ and holden. A land that lives with RWD 24/7. Holden needs a new platform. That is how GM will afford the Camaro here. Easy enough. If gas prices throw things off that's a different story. but the Holdens still need their new platform to simply exist. This thread is just silly.

O.C. Noting a car for elephant grain on the plastic does not mean the plastic itself is not hard. It is a general trend in the industry. DCX is worse with that but all the americans, and others of course, do this. I don't think there is one "squishy" part of the fusion. Unless you count the seats. I'm doing an extended drive in one next week. I'll report back but I've been in a few so far and the exterior is the winning element of this car. DT -
it was probably a Daytona. which is a slightly beefier version of the regular Hemi Charger not SRT8. http://www.dodge.com/gallery/img/charger/enlarge_13.jpg

isn't the Aura at the NAIAS? I didn't see it there but it won some award right? best production car on display or something. Also anyone see the new Saturn commercial during the golden globes last night? 3 vehicles, Aura, Sky and Vue.

Chicago/New York are next, what should we expect?
mphmag replied to jrockb4's topic in Chicago Auto Show (CAS)
Chicago is traditionally known as the "truck" show of the year. So many companies bring their trucks to debut there. I don't think it has anything to do with GM. -
I don't think he has an official one from Dodge. He either has the Daytona (which might look similar) or he has an aftermarket badged one. Also why do you think this is in response to slow sales? That doesn't make sense. The Heritage Edition 300C is in response to slowing sales of the 300 after being on the market for so long but this isn't. BTW I did not see this at NAIAS press days! When was it there? Harley Earl where did you get the images at 12:45 today? Just wondering. As far as the package. I love the hood in that black. I think that's hot. Even the graphics at the back give a stinger type look. Shoot, if you're going to get an SRT-8 might as well get this one. Interior is custom too. But I'd like to see some mechanical changes over the standard one to make it really stand out.

is someone seriously suggesting the dealers can save GM? I think it's time that the car salesmen goes the way of the DoDo. Times they are a changing and people don't want to BS anymore. That's why Internet sales, even through dealers, are way up. That's why it's smart to move to no haggle. Maybe Toyota is doing so well because they don't negotiate much on price (from a position of strength of course). And why Saturn had such a high loyalty rate. See my manifesto, and I've said it before, is to turn the dealerships into customer service centers. Yep, you heard me. Service, credit and sales. You walk in and don't feel like you have to be sold something anymore. that will change how customers view the entire experience. They're selling Scions with internet kiosks! You still need the personal touch, but with the Big box stores selling HDTVs for $5K and no hassle, it's not much of a leap to apply the same logic to a $15K car. Should I write a big proposal and demand someone adopt it or else? No i just throw it around my favorite forum for reaction.

I didn't say it was the worst car company I said worst of the Japanese. Big difference. But Mazda, Toyota, Honda and Mitsubishi all have nicer interiors. And all of those companies seem to have larger improvements to their interiors than Nissan. Infiniti obviously being an exception and I'm talking about the main companies only.

This is one of those I had to see in the flesh to think it looked ok. I saw the images first though and hated them. Saw it in person and went "oh not too bad" They'll sell a ton of these. BTW even though the SH-AWD is s stupid name, the system in the RL is really pretty stellar. that's an underrated car.

This is so bad. It is the right angle ont he auto show. concepts are much closer to reality than ever before. yet he misses all the best examples. The Challenger, Camaro and Volvo C30 are going to be in dealerships in the next 2 years. The Kia Soul and Mitsu concept will probably never be built. And I think the Mazda kabura will come out before the Reflex. Even the Urge as crazy as it is has mroe interest from Nissan to be built than the Kia or Mitsu. Also there are more interestig tidbits like the Ford Superchief design...it might see production. even if the vehicle itself wit the wild engine may not. mass media sucks.

DFP yaks on the Ford Edge
mphmag replied to avant1963's topic in North American International Auto Show in Detroit (NAIAS)
Wait we're supposed to have mascots? What would be mph's? I guess we'll just stick with the Bettys. -
it's really the flash making everything look grey instead of black that is throwing you guys off. it is one of the nicest concept interiors I've seen. Lutz said all the billet won't be in the production version. i assume that means the gold metal too. However even if they just make it aluminim trim on black it'll be hot. the shifter, hvac, stereo controls will all be different I'm sure, but the gauges/dash will prob look a lot like that.

NAIAS: The Spy's take
mphmag replied to Chris_Doane's topic in North American International Auto Show in Detroit (NAIAS)
Did you sit in the Cayman? Oh man I'm ready to drive that baby. It was the only one I wanted to start up and literally drive outta there, especially since it was near the door. -

CD, VW had the Eos out, while not a concept I think it will be very very successful. Amazing convertible/sunroof thing going on. And it will help them win that cabriolet crowd back. All the girls that don't want to be cute (Beetle, Mini) but still want a smaller convertible will eat this up. plus it's more practical with the hardtop. I was just really really impressed by it. Just an FYI Tuesday at the Auto Show is really slow. This is when all the TV crews and magazine guys come in and get to shoot extended shots of certain cars. They get moved, they get people to vacate the area etc. It is NORMAL. I even psoted about it on MPH yesterday. It is not a conspiracy. I even saw Steve Kroft from 60 Minutes on the floor. CBS News has no mention of this week's show scheudle but I'm guessing GM will be this week. Also the Tahoe is unique in a few ways, and duh, of course it's real. It can tow what a normal Tahoe tows. that's impressive. Also Ive heard Toyota can not upscale their system to do this. But I haven't checked the towing capacity of the highlander. Also how is someone reporting on something when he is not there?

Yeah but a lot changes in person when you open and close a door and feel like you locked yourself in a sardine can in the versa. The Fit felt solid like a civic and in a small car that is a big deal. also the versa felt cramped in the drivers seat. While the Yaris felt best and the fit was OK. I thought the fit came off 100 times better in person, as does the new civic. yes yaris had Scion xA like interior but I'd take that over the Versa. but yes the Versa looks better than the new sentra.
