It doesn't need a powerful engine. What about the people who want a nice car, but want 30+ mpg? I'd take the Astra over an Aura, or a Focus. I already have my 400hp car if I want to go fast.
-
And the Astra is going to be imported in limited numbers. What good is selling them for $12,000, selling every one on the lots in 6 months, then having none for the remaining 6 months of the year? The one thing I'm waiting on is the mileage numbers for the 1.8L, that hasn't been released yet has it?
-
It's only ~$900 more. They look better, and there will be less of them sold here.

GM wasn't even acting as if it were a global company for the past 10 years. That has changed. The cars I stated that Pontiac needs, can all be sold in other countries as well. Cadillac could use a 1 series sized car in Europe (Kappa II shared with the G5), a 3 series sized car (Alpha shared with G6), Holden could use Alpha for a car below the Commodore. Holden could also use the export volume of the G8 to keep their plants running. I agree that Pontiac should not be rebadges, but killing the brand is not the solution. And what happens if GM does kill the rest of the brands, and focuses on Chevy and Cadillac, if the higher sales do not come right away, if ever? Pontiac still sells over 200k for retail sales. That's alot of sales for the Impala and Malibu to pick up. Saturn is selling about 50k Auras, that's even more the Malibu would need to pick up. Even if the Malibu and Impala were class leading, I wouldn't expect them to sell near the 700k needed to make up those lost sales. Other brand face the same problem, whether it's Mazda with the Mazda6, or Nissan with the Altima. I think both are better cars than the Accord/Camry, but yet they don't come close to the sales numbers. How can you expect Chevy to do so, in a relatively short amount of time? The market is getting more and more fragmented, not less.

Or, GM could make Pontiac into the brand it should be, and sell a RWD G6 on Alpha (The platform needs to be shared somewhere to make it viable for Cadillac to make a true competitor to the 3 series, it won't work as a Chevy, a RWD G5 on Kappa II if it is flexible enough, the G8, which the Impala will not satisfy because the suspensions will need to be soft enough in the Impala to be marketed towards the mainstream buyer. Yes they could make an Impala SS, but they won't be cheap, and there will still be some people who don't need 400+HP and still want a stiffer suspension and more focus on performance than the Impala can offer, but with a 3.6L instead. It makes more sense for all the performance oriented cars to go to Pontiac, and not to Chevy. Chevy can't sell a RWD compact, a FWD compact, then a RWD midsize, and a FWD midsize, and can't make the Impala too performance oriented without losing the core Impala buyer. That's where Pontiac fits in. Pontiac only needs the RWD G5/G6/G8 and Solstice, they would have an extremely focused lineup, and they can build up the brand as a credible performance brand. Trying to make Chevy everything to everyone just won't work. I don't see Toyota trying to sell sports cars under the Toyota brand because it would be a conflicting image, do they sell economical cars, or sport cars? The sportiest non-luxury car Toyota offers is a Scion, I wonder why?
-
That's what Alpha will be for.....hopefully. But It would be more G6 than G5
-
That's because GM has been doing it all wrong. GM was making 4 versions of the same car, and giving one to each brand. That watered down each brands image. GM should instead have combined Buick/Pontiac/GMC a long time ago, gave them each only a few cars/trucks, but made each one fit their image better. Pontiac shouldn't never have been selling Sunfires. GM should have been selling Monaros and Commodores here as Pontiacs for the past 10+ years.
-
We already know Chevy has a great image....... for trucks. The Corvette is an exception, and is talked about as if it were it's own brand.
-
If that's true, then all I can say is... about time. That engine has been consistently behind the competition for so long.
-
Since GM should be able badge everything as a Chevy, why couldn't Toyota(according to the media the ultimate brand) sell the current Scion line-up as Toyotas? Why did they have to create a whole new brand and take money away from Toyota? Different brands are meant to fit different themes. When you see a brand, it should have a certain image in your mind. Pontiac should be sports car, excellent handling. What would Chevy be? Kia competitor with the Aveo? GM's many brands are an advantage if used correctly, not a disadvantage. What next? Kill Jeep and make them all Dodges?

Should the Corvette abandon the V8 for an I6?
CaddyXLR-V replied to dwightlooi's topic in Powertrain
That would be a better engine for the Cadillac CTS, or an Alpha Pontiac/Cadillac. Since we are just dreaming anyway, I wouldn't mind it in the Pontiac's mid-engine version of the Corvette. -
I get 20 paid days off, so I'm not to far behind you.
-
Not for me. I won't buy a Buick.
-
If GM kills Pontiac I might as well start buying BMWs instead.
-
Well in that case, what is Scion? What is Acura? What is Infiniti? What is Lexus? All their cars are badged as something else in different countries. What is wrong with GM using their global resources as an advantage? It makes more sense to sell Holdens here as Pontiacs, than it does to sell them here as Holdens. I would be fine with Pontiac rebadging Holdens. It's a whole lot better than Pontiac rebadging Chevies.
-
I don't see anyone crying because Nissan uses their 3.5L in Infinitis and in regular Nissans, and I don't see anyone crying because Chevy is getting Cadillacs 3.6L. So why is it an issue with the GTO? And the 3.8L is based on a Buick design, and that engine has been in Chevies for years. Should Chevy be killed too, since they need to use Cadillac and Buick engines?
-
Well heres another source that says thats wrong:Base Engine Size: 5.7 liters Base Engine Type: V8 Horsepower: 255 hp Max Horsepower: 4600 rpm Torque: 330 ft-lbs. Max Torque: 2800 rpm That was 1998, almost 10 years ago. http://www.edmunds.com/used/1998/chevrolet...4434/specs.html I picked the Tahoe, because they have the exact same engine, but the Tahoe has it as the standard engine. Don't praise Chrysler for finally catching up to what GM has been offering for 5+ years. GM's 4.2L I6 makes 290hp. GM's 5.3L has made 285hp/325 torque since 1999.
-
So rear drive means bad gas mileage? Also, their's nothing remotely Chevy in my Pontiac, unless the Monaro was sold in other markets as a Chevy, and I have green gauges. Seems like Pontiac can't win with you. Either it's a Chevy clone with red gauges, or if GM does the opposite, it's a RWD hog. Let me guess, salesman at a Chevy dealership?

My GTO is easily the best car I have ever owned. I can't see myself getting rid of it anytime soon. I almost didn't get a GTO because they were so hard to find in the 2005 with a 6 speed. I was on my way to look at an 03 BMW 330Ci when I got the call about my GTO being for sale. I went to see the GTO, and loved it, so I never went to see the BMW. It took me about 3 months to find my GTO. I want to get a 6.3L Camaro when they come out, but I don't think I would be willing to part with my GTO in order to get it.

I would include Japan on the '"friend" list as well, regardless of what people here think about Japan. We do have good relations with them, and we know Japan will not do something against us, that will hurt their own economy. The rising issue is China with their growing influence, and Japan will be on our side with regards to anything China tries to pull. Also, the world economy is tied into the US economy, and any big recession in the US will affect the rest of the world, so other countries will not want to see China do anything like what they threaten to do. The way I see it, it is in alot of countries best interests to not allow China to do what they have threatened to do.
-
Can't the US just get help from other countries if they buy the currency China dumps, and have them sell it off gradually?
-
Just because no one tried it, doesn't mean it should be tried. I would think it would be horribly unbalanced, especially with larger displacements. I also don't think it would give an advantage in fuel economy compared to a small V6. The best way to achieve fuel economy and power, is to downsize an I4, and put a turbo on it. Instead of a 2.0L 260hp turbo ecotec, why not a 1.4L turbo ecotec with 182hp?
-
It's probably cheaper, more space efficient, and will develop more power, to just add a turbo onto an existing I4 design, than to develop a V4.

Revenue is simply total sales, which doesn't give any clue to the value, or health of a company. A company with $100B in revenue, can still be losing $10B per year, which in most cases makes the company worthless.
