  1. Seems like horse poey to me. The books author is not even listed on wikipedia. More disturbing is the part of his review where he describes sheep dying from grazing on cotton plants. Cotton plants gossypol which is highly toxic so naturally they died. Likewise his statement that the Rockefeller institute introduced a new science called microbiology is a hoot. Microbiology has been around for hundreds of years predating even Louis Pasteur.
  2. I think so too. Also note that the Yen is rising in value sharply making cars imported from Japan much more expensive going forward.
  3. Because of the same reason they were down less than any one else the month before.
  4. It's not unusual for farmers to have their own underground fuel tanks for farm equipment. They pay no road use tax on this fuel and just happen to fill up their personal vehicles too. Everyone's got a scam. :AH-HA_wink:
  5. While I understand your concern, to be fair to the author he did suggest using the tax revenue for bridge repair. My #1 son in-law is car hauler has been hit with a double whammy. Not only was the cost of fuel a bummer, but the business has been drying up. First the new car deliveries slowed to a trickle, then the car rental return business tried up, then the junk car transport to the crusher business died up as the price of scrap metal went south.
  6. IIRC Lutz is in favor of increased fuel taxes too.
  7. I salute your indecision and honesty. Your analysis is pretty good here too, but I would suggest considering changing McCain being a better leader to a more experienced and deserving leader. Both parties should have done better in their nomination efforts.
  8. Senator John Testor of Montana slaughters and dresses his own meat, packs it into a cooler, and brings it back to Washington. There is a congressional candidate in NY-29, Eric Massa, whose source of income is his disability income as a Naval Commander. He had built up a small lead but his opponent Randy Kuhl just got an infusion of $60,000 from the very people on Wall Street that were just bailed out by the government. Eric doesn't accept any corporate donations. However, the discussion here was about presidential candidates as everyday people. My wife and I wrote in a politician who at times raised his family in a trailer. When his family car died he rebuilt the engine himself. I don't think either Senators Obama or McCain have done that! Frankly i doubt either of them could do that.
  9. That was then this is now. Senator McCain has consistently voted against veterans and active duty personnel.
  10. full article
  11. I think that in reality a candidate's commonness isn't much of a predictor of success. President Kennedy was far from a common background and by most accounts was an exceptional President (probably not quite as good as commonly thought of but still above average). President Nixon came from humble beginnings and did not finish his term. As a point of truthfulness, I voted for neither Senators Obama nor McCain, however I do think a President Obama would do a better job than would a President McCain.
  12. Fortunately.
  13. I'm not a big fan of Senator Obama, but I don't know what more he could possibly have said. He seems to understand legacy costs and the importance of the industry.
  14. I thought I read that there production would continue in Arlington, TX only?
  15. Well if that party member drives a Dodge, then they are not sheep but rams. :-)
  16. This statement brings up an interesting question; what makes one an automotive enthusiast? Is it the person with the most powerful car or is the person it who most appreciates the most modest of cars?
  17. I don't know, but in years past Chrysler always made a profit from Mopar and had received numerous offers to buy it. I'm not sure that such offers haven't dried up in todays economy.
  18. Didn't Mitsubishi almost give up on their North American business because of bad loan policies. I wonder what the relative harm to GM, etc. has been from falling resale value of leased cars vs. poor purchase lending procedures.
  19. Me too! .. 6'9" wide
  20. No missed threads. I am just looking at family histories, considering my health status and feeling my age. Perhaps too maudlin for such a beautiful day.
  21. Speaking of new names .. how about the Chevy hemi! It has a nice ring to it and all. Of course they shouldn't build a real large v8 engine just use the name on some run of the mill world engine from Hyundai. Pretty silly? I am, but so too are many of you. The financial crisis is paramount. Moving brands around is like the old worn meme of moving deck chairs on the the titanic. The survivor of this economic turnaround won't be the largest company or the best engineered one. Those companies with the cash will rule. About 15 months ago I bought a new HHR. It's been a wonderful car. I bought an extended warranty with it. About 6 months ago I started worrying that I might not last as long as the warranty. Now it looks like the company that I bought the warranty from, General Motors, may absolve me of that mistake by expiring first.
  22. maybe they are hesitant because they are not sure of getting flooring to cover the next car they buy from GM?
  23. I think that you might enjoy this article. Three Reasons to Feel Good About American Automakers <snip>
  24. Me too! I think Monza fits in with the Malibu name nicely (popular during the same glory years of Chevy? ).
  25. It is a twofer. OJ got hauled off to jail at 11 PM on a Friday night too!
