1. Be careful what you wish for. I wrote to him perhjaps 50 years ago complaining about his Renalut Daulphine review and he defended that car at the expense of american cars.
2.
and now digital gauges on the civic are ok when in the past in GMcars it was trashed? My post refered directly to the ION's instruement cluster.
3. And is quite ergonomic too.
4. Appareently there is some question on the new ion. from here
5. I think that we are confusing several possibilities. When trying to pass a transmission shifts out of overdrive if it has an overdrive. In the 50' and 60's there was a vacume opearted separate gear ratio that changed the final drive ratio and was refered to as an overdrive. Todays automatic transmissions generally have a top ratio of less than 1.0 and are also refered to as an overdrive ratio, but is not a separate available ratio or speed to be added to the 4 listed for a typical GM automatic transmission. What the typical automatic does have nowadays is a locking and unlicking tougue converter. This usually operates on the top two gears and does indeed change the rpm observable on the tachometer. In at least one case that I can think of (ford powered gas motor homes) the operator can manualyu unlock the torque converter for higher revs but poorer fuel milage.
6. Hell they don't even take into account wind resistance. The test are performed on a dynometer utilizing a very specific standard drive cylce including idle time, stops, rate of acceleration, etc.
7. I took it to mean just the opposite. He was saying the corvette was super special and that GM was over stepping by comparing the Solistice to it. I don't particluarily agree with himj, but that is what he was trying to say. :(
8. Autoweek recently reported that the camaro would be on an extended Kappa. Sorry I don't have the link. Also I don't pretend to know wheteher they know what they are talking about or not.
9.
And why is that? Not only are they two seperate cars with seperate purposes and designs, they're also assembled in completely different plants sold under completely different names and divisions.
The Corolla and the Vibe are both built in Freemont CA using the same engine, transmissions, fuel pumps, and a thousand other Toyota parts. Really where do you get some of your quaint ideas?
I really FAIL to see the logic behind even the Corolla/Matrix combo. MUCH LESS the Vibe thrown in; it is a joint venture, obviously not a TOYOTA builds for GM deal. And that can be determined by a number of things including the lack of reliability compared to other Toyota models
When GM was running this plant, the labor relations there were amoung the worst in the corporation. Likely this may have much do with reliabilty now, too. This is very much a Toyota builds it for GM deal.
Okay... Then based on that assumption, GM should add Monte Carlo and Impala sales together or HHR and Cobalt sales (Since HHR is the wagon version of the Cobalt) or better yet, Isuzu SUV & truck sales to Chevrolet truck sales or Yukon to Tahoe sales...
Cool .. your arguements have progressed to reasonableness. I believe that Toyota some times refers to the Corolla Matrix. If Chevrolet refered to the Cobalt HHR (a very appealing vehicle), then when coustomers came to the showroom and found no wagons(HHR) available, they just go home with a Cobalt sedan or at least give it a second look.
Better YET, let's just add up SEGMENT sales numbers.... You know, Toyota Corolla, Matrix and Scion. Chevrolet Cobalt, HHR and Aveo; and Saturn Ion etc
Isn't this done already? When the media or Lutz or even members here talk about the importance of the midsize market or the slumping sales of LARGE sport utility vehicles, that is exactly what they are doing. I think it is fairly simple to see that different matrices of data serve different functions.
As for the fleet only GM model or division.. A lot of people including myself proposed that to keep Oldsmobile alive (Although I think the idea originated with Dsuupr) and 2 issues were raised. 1) There would still be pretty big cost with retooling it to look like no other GM among other overhead issues. 2) It would make tourists and such more of a TARGET while traveling. Think about it, if you're driving a fleet only GM, then people are going to know that you're usually not from that area and might try to take advantage of that situation.
I'm not really "married" to the idea of an Oldsmobile fleet brand but would counter your well thought out numbered arguements with: 1. The cost of retooling front fascia, for example would be smaller than that of maintaining an actual brand due to marketing costs etc. not being an issue. Actual design costs would be zero since there are plentry of designs that get tossed out in the selection process. 2. Many fleet sales are for other than daily rentals for tourists. How would the thieves know if they were "jacking" a tourist or a plane clothesed policeman, an FBI agent, or a meter reader. Merry Christmas and other seasonal salutations!
10. from here "General Motors builds all of the Class-C chassis at its Wentzville Assembly Center in Missouri. Production is expected to begin in January 2006." and from the warkhorse web site The Company Workhorse Custom Chassis was formed in 1998 as a manufacturer of Class A motor home, commercial step van, school bus and European motor home chassis. Manufacturing facilities are located in Union City, Indiana; Sales and service offices are near Detroit. The Focus Workhorse Custom Chassis is the only chassis manufacturer who only manufactures chassis. Workhorse does not produce automobiles, trucks, vans, SUV's, RV's or any other type of vehicle. This single focus means 100% of all Workhorse resources go into the design, production and support of chassis. The Plant At 209,000 square feet, the state-of-the-art Union City plant is the largest strip chassis manufacturing facility in the world. The plant operates on a four-day, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. schedule Monday through Thursday. --------------------------------------------------- Botom line - I don't know what this has to do with Louisville either?
11. Actually Toyota should righlty add Vibe sales to Matrix and Corolla sales. Getting back to the topic of fleet sales - If GM cuts back, and Ford and Chrysler already have -- then what the hell do people drive when they go out of town on bussiness or pleasure. What do employers buy for employees who drive for work? It would seem to me that GM should try to raise the sale price of these cars slightly rather than decrease sales.
12. In other types of vehicles more speeds in the transmission help with fuel consumption and keeping the engine at max torque. The wind resistance of these vehicles negates the advantages of the first issue and the torque characteristics of the 8.1 l engine takes care of the second. I drove my motor home all over the Southern California and and found the need for a good jake break more than another gear.
13. So the real question is: did GM's battle with Neil lead to a fairer review ar a still harsher one?
14. here is your picture and just for fun the super sport option Seriously, workhorse has done a great job getting Chevy back into the RV field and eating into Ford's lead.
15. Doesn't the miata weigh hundreds of pounds less?
16. Hey they could call it the Oldsmobile!
17. In a slighlty realted topic: Christmas wil be in December and again the following November this year. In previous years the Los Angeles show has been premiered just days befor the detroit show. This year only, it will be in December as usual, and again in November. After this year, the LA show will be in November only.
18. Newsmax is fairly well know right wing funded rag. Don't blame Josh if he got suckered. These people are unreliable and that's charitable.
19. I read that it was getting larger too, but hay what's the big deal.
20. When the Suzuki XL-7 was the only mini-ute with a useless third row seat, all the journalist pop-pooed the idea. I think that this Rav4 will be harder on the honda CRV than the Equinox. the car connection has a review of the Rav4. They show that this really is nearly the same size as Toyota Highlander. The new Highlander willl be even larger soon.
21. Is that in as not "called" gamma any more, or not on the same architecture that it was going to be based on?
22. It takes all kinds. :o The exterior is much worse than the previous vehicle but I like the interior.
23. According to the Honda web site, that 147 figure is a very unimpressive 132.
24. The street price for the Pacifica seems to be less than the Maxx here in the L.A. area. My neighbor across the street has had Ram pickups for as long as I have known him. He is now driving a new Silverado crew cab with DVD. His neigbor has a beatiful new Black CTS (also not a GM owner). I really think GM is starting to seel better out here.
