  1. At the very least you should consider driving only in daylight hours with a licensed driver next to you. I don't mean to be mean, but you just don't get it.
  2. Probably not more, but the energy inputs are considerable. There is diesel fuel to run the tractors, electricity to power irrigation pups, and lots of petruleum to produce the fertilizer I don't mean to be so negative. It is great that we are discuuisng these things. It is just that it is so much harder to do than people assume. We can take little bites off the edges haer and there and the sooner the better. Passive and active solar energy use can free some petroleum products from use in non automotive uses and make more fuel available for our cars. Reduced vehicle weight and wind resistance as in the new Tahoes can help. A return to lower speed limits as during the Carter years is necessary too. Diesel and/or direct ignition engines is doable. Finally I was kigging about dandelions.
  3. You bring up a lot of good points. Certainly the later Azteks looked better than the earlier ones, but really is the Buick Rendevous that so many here like that much better. Of course not. I hope FOG doesn't read this. He is right some times. The media killed the Aztek. I read the crap about it and believed it. I ususally form my own opinions but I got fooled on the Aztek. When it first came out I was looking at one in the show room while I was getting my wife's car serviced. A salesman ingaged me in conversation about the Aztek and I lauged at it. As I was ridicuing it, a little voice in the back of my mind was saying something different to me. I thought about that car more than once when they were heavily discounted.
  4. Thank you! That is just the question I was going to ask fully expeciting the answer that you gave. The H1 is too large too navigate the drive thru line at McD's, therefore it is too large to go the majority of off road opportunities. Or so I would opine.
  5. He drives professionaly.
  6. I am a little curious as to your scientific or economic basis for this. Corn, biochemicaly, is refered to as a c-4 plant. All photosynthetic plants are classified as C4 or C3 with the C$ plants being more efficient. So at least from this one aspect corn would be a better choice than potatoes for instance. Do you know of any land use benefit or difference that potatoes have over corn? One possibility would be a shorter or different growing season. Radishes for instance are one of the first groups farmers plant in the spring because of their cold tolerance. I am not aware of potatoes sharing in this characteritic but I could be wrong. In a previous post I suggested dandellions but no one expressed interest. How about Russian dandelions?
  7. I wonder if all the bad publicity about the lack of armour on the the Humvees in Iraq had any part in accelerating this decission.
  8. Looking good! Daughter #1 just got rid of her 94 SL2 with 140,000 miles because it didn't have enough seat belts. Her only modification were scratches, but no dents from where her boy scraped the snow off of th e car with a shovel. Daughter #4's 2006 ION's only modification is a beaded necklass kind of thing she makes and coustomesizes for each of her sister's car.
  9. The shortage of land is a given.
  10. One of the few common problems with the S-series was the engine mount. Check it out if you get a chance.
  11. Also they use 100% petroleum for a few moths out of year. Brazil has a longer growing seaon then we do, they have more cultivable land than we do, and much less demand. If we do somehow go to an ethanol based economy, you won't be able to afford beef.
  12. Tell it to the ION owners with over 200,000 miles. I like the Astra and the idea of filling in with it, but it won't be as reliable as the ION.
  13. I see now. Thanks.
  14. I'm not sure what you are referring to here. Presently they use a 4 cylinder(with and without hybrid abilities), a chinesse OHV v6, and a Hond sourced OHC v6. Previously there was the 54 degree OHC v6. There are manual transmissions, conventional 4 and 5 speed automatics, and previously a CVT transmission. That is quite an array of powertrains.
  15. They will loose a lot of sales with this unless there is some great improvement in power train or functionality to make up the difference. The present product's styling is still outsatnding, but this is Honda/Toyota like without the reputation.
  16. click here So the Astra sells more cars in Europe than Toyota sells Camrys in the United States! Who knew?
  17. 62.8 mpg (even if it is Imperial gallons) is impressive and needed!
  18. Yes the 3 door is the winner and it clud compete with the mini if equiped to the hilt. I think the name should be kept. This will aid in the quality perception and give the auto mag guys something to write about that they understand. I wonder if Saturn should pass on the Astra and go with the smaller corsa only? The dealerships are going to be crowded iwth all these different entries and more importantly a car this small may seem more aspirational than an ION replacement sized vehicle. Compacts have mostlyu been low cost transportation alternatives. Comments?
  19. They are a great buy for older drivers also. The instruement panel is ergonomicaly friendly to us older drivers.
  20. For years Jill's corporate speak has been a topic of disgust on the Saturn fan sites.
  21. ION 2 vs. Cobalt LS. I sometimes think that I should have persued the Cobalt further (LT) or perhaps even an HHR.
  22. I have an Indian bride magazine and the colors presented here are muted if anything. It's a brave new world.
