GM plus?............. who should GM partner with? (Mazda?)
riviera74 replied to regfootball's topic in General Motors
One Q: What does Honda have to offer that GM actually needs right now? 30-35 years ago, the answer would be dead simple: experience making small cars. GM no longer needs that. Remember that Honda itself is more engine maker than car company. Honda makes a LOT of different types of things. They may need a partner, but I am not sure what GM needs from them. -
Car From Your Birth Year - What Would You Choose?
riviera74 replied to Cory Wolfe's topic in The Lounge
Given that I was born in December of 1974, I am not sure what car was anything special then. It seems to me that the better cars either came a lot earlier (pre-72) or later (waiting for the 80s). Sigh. Most cars in 74 were either too big or poor performers or too small to be worth it. Am I right that there was a lost decade in cardom? -
Buick News: Rumorpile: What's In the Pipeline for Buick
riviera74 replied to William Maley's topic in Buick
Oh thank goodness for that. I have never understood why the XTS was not a Buick in the first place. Less weight is always a good thing. -
Buick News: Rumorpile: What's In the Pipeline for Buick

About the growth in size: Car size growth has happened all over the automotive landscape for decades. My concern is the new LaCrosse. The new LaX is based on the new Malibu?! Why not the XTS/Impala instead? -
Toyota News: Toyota's Australian Branch Wants the Tundra
riviera74 replied to William Maley's topic in Toyota
Given that Toyota generally does not make diesel engines for any of its consumer products, it will still be just a dream for any Aussies who want a Tundra. GM should send the Colorado/Canyon down there with a diesel option. Maybe the SIlverado too.- 15 replies

It would have to be a Lambda, not a Theta. A Chevy Traverse Police SS with a TTV6 would do the job nicely.

GM never has intended to sell the car in quantities, all the magazines have confirmed it. It wants to give the perception that "we tried" but customers ran away from it. Therein lies the problem: GM has never marketed the SS at all. Few people know about it, so the SS does not sell at all. This is quite sad, especially given that gas is south of $2.50/gallon these days. If GM would market the SS at least as hard as the new Colorado, they might actually sell some SS models.

No, GM did the right thing here with ordering parts before the recall. This is a classic case of looks bad vs. is bad. Nobody can make replacement parts appear out of thin air in less than 24 hours.

Isn't the primary reason GM pushes the LF3 over the LT1 in almost every car boil down to MPG and nothing else? I am sure that the ATS-V will probably get the LT1 instead, but MPG concerns (and newer regs) still exist.

Cadillac News: Spying: The Next Cadillac SRX or XT5
riviera74 replied to William Maley's topic in Cadillac
SMK, I am a little disappointed too. Having said that, FWD crossovers are where the money is. Remember the RWD 1st-gen SRX? I do; those did not sell as well as Cadillac or GM hoped. So they followed the leader and the market: middle-aged women and the Lexus RX. Now the SRX is 2nd in sales. The new flagship Caddy and the CTS/ATS will take care of the RWD needs. Besides, the BMW X3/X5 sell poorly by comparison to the RX/SRX. -
Michigan Governor Signs Bill Banning Direct Auto Sales
riviera74 replied to William Maley's topic in Tesla
Instead of GM supporting auto dealers (which have been a boat anchor for several years now), GM should compete directly with Tesla and build a $25K all-electric car. No Tesla is cheaper than $50K right now. Remember when about 1000 dealers from GM/Ford/Chrysler were shuttered as part of the bankruptcy? Now, Tesla wants to end this bad idea, but the states do not want to because so many state legislators either get paid by auto dealers or or own auto dealerships themselves. Protecting NADA and its members amounts to a stupid state-sanctioned cartel that must end. Too bad no one else is willing to do just that. -
I just looked at the 2015 GMC Canyon website. It still could use a diesel/turbodiesel to go along with the 2.5L I4 and the 3.6L V6 gas engines.

What engine is the LTS going to have? Northstar has been dead for 5-6 years. GM has no v12 to speak of and a v6 would be a joke in this car. An 8AT is great news, even though I have no idea why 8-speeds are required now. If the LTS has a Corvette engine tuned for this application, that should be OK.

Cadillac News: General Motors Exec: ELR Is Not Our Tesla Competitor
riviera74 replied to William Maley's topic in Cadillac
GM needs to build a real Tesla competitor and defeat it. The ELR is not that car. It is an overpriced, upmarket Volt. I have no idea whether the ELR is a flop or not simply because we have no idea of GM's sales expectations for that car.- 17 replies

Rumorpile: Cadillac LTS To Debut At New York: Comments
riviera74 replied to William Maley's topic in Cadillac
Cmicasa, two things: 1. It is not necessarily true that American critics loathe themselves. It IS TRUE that a LOT of them LOVE the BMW 3 series, and much of their criticisms come from that. 2. The Mercedes S-class outsells all other cars in its class by a margin (in the USA, if not worldwide) of 3 to 1. Being #1 does have its priviledges.- 68 replies

Cadillac News: Cadillac Adds Some Platinum On The 2015 Escalade
riviera74 replied to William Maley's topic in Cadillac
The new Escalade seems to be the only model GM has (Corvette aside) that can be priced north of $75K and no one laughs at the price. Even though I am not a truck fan generally, I do hope that the LTS is as feature packed as this 2015 Escalade and is priced accordingly.
