  1. Why have a hybrid powertrain on a car costing north of $250K when you can go full electric instead? Asking for a friend (who can afford one).
  2. Poor auto industry. Scott Pruitt refuses to take a simpler approach to this: get Congress to repeal CAFE standards in the first place. That would be ideal. So Pruitt pursues a rollback to 37 MPG eight years from now instead of the 46.8 MPG as proposed by the last administration. He might have gotten away with it if he left CA authority alone and focused on the rollback instead. His plan will probably fail because he got too greedy and wants to abolish higher state standards. Choose your battles wisely and you might actually win.
  3. Good thing they did not name this trim level SS. That belongs on high-performance cars (e.g. Camaro and Corvette) --- not a BOF SUV. Ever. NO. Just NO. Bad idea period. It is a rebodied truck, not a street-legal race car.
  4. All forms of innovation start at the high end and work their way down. Expect subscription services to replace car buying in at least 15 years or so.
  5. Maybe instead of an Ecosport, seek superior alternatives. As for California vs. Pruitt's EPA, expect CA to win in court. The only way Pruitt wins is if ALL emissions regulations and CAFE standards are repealed by Congress, and apparently there is no appetite for doing either one.
  6. Given current regulations, a cheap car (around $10K) and a cheap CUV (around $12K) would sell like hotcakes and cripple the used car market. Only problem is is that I suspect that automakers will pocket the profits by charging $3K more on top.
  7. Probably more since the current Explorer is a CUV rather than a sedan.
  8. So the new RAM has production issues for FCA. I wonder if it will lead to lost sales a few months from now. Or they get lucky and RAM buyers do not switch to Chevy/GMC or Ford during the interregnum.
  9. It matters that VW is doing this because of Europe, not the United States. If their primary market was the US, then they might make that consideration. Remember, Ford has the F-series and VW does not.
  10. I suspect that sooner or later all of Lincoln will be toast because Cadillac is outselling Lincoln everywhere in every segment.
  11. A unibody Land Rover Defender pickup? Have they not seen the lack of sales of the Honda Ridgeline? And Hondas have historically been better built than anything Land Rover has done over the years.
  12. Definitely Premium. Around here, premium is as high as $3.289 a gallon.

  15. Just like Australia, GM Korea is simply too expensive. Time to say goodbye and eventually have that production in China.
  16. If China is getting these electric vehicles in 2021, I would certainly recommend that they stop burning coal to power their electrical grid. The EV is supposed to help reduce pollution and GHGs. But if the power plant burns coal or any fossil fuels to generate that electricity, then that defeats the purpose of having EVs replace ICE cars in the first place. Also, when do they come to the USA?
  17. WOW. A Maybach interior with the split rear window of a 63 Corvette Stingray and a body that is inherently uglier than any Pontiac Aztek ever seen. And they probably want at least $300K for this vehicle once in production. WTF.
  18. I have seen only a few Ridgelines around here, and around here is F-Series country (with a lot of Silverados and Sierras too). This unibody Hyundai will have a tough time convincing traditional truck buyers to actually want one, especially in the era of the CUV. I also doubt that Hyundai's new unibody pickup will make inroads against the Colorado/Canyon, let alone the Tacoma. I will ask the same question that also applies to the Ridgeline and its fairly low sales numbers: why would anyone buy a midsize or compact unibody pickup truck?!
  19. Do not be so sure that automation will make GM Korea profitable, or at least less costly. GM went through some serious automation near Detroit in the 80s and it did not go well.   20. Yes, change is hard. Sure, electric vehicles are the future and we should embrace them. But EVs have to be better AND cheaper than current ICE cars because it makes little or no sense to switch unless it has a compelling value to the customer, not the environmentalists. The issue with the USA resting on its laurels while the rest of the planet leapfrogs us is a serious issue. Our current politics are such that few seem willing to embrace the future while SO Many Americans want to turn the clock back to 1980 if not 1960. A lot of people in Middle America would rather have their factories (and jobs) back as if it was 1955 instead of chase the 21st Century, where they feel left behind. This country needs to radically upgrade our electrical grid for security and efficiency right now. Many of our roads and several bridges badly need maintenance and repair right now. Perhaps the only way we can address these crucial issues is that we need an external enemy that kick our butts and force some real changes. Sputnik forced not only the creation of NASA but also a renewed interest in STEM and serious upgrades in almost everything. Most of our current infrastructure dates from 1955-1975 or so, if not earlier. China is in several ways passing us; India may do the same. What do we do about these issues?
  21. Alfa Romeo sells its cars as high performance and beautiful. Imagine the most beautiful woman you have ever seen, and you get to have her on a date. After a couple of months, you find that her physical beauty cannot mask the significant defects in her personality. She might even have a few emotional problems. So you decide to end that relationship. Gentlemen, that beautiful woman is an Alfa Romeo. Looks great; has serious issues that you don't want.
  22. Can someone explain to me why the XT6 does NOT have a turbo v6 rather than the corporate NA v6? Cadillacs should have better engines than their downscale counterparts.

  24. So JdN got fired. Is the new guy a lot better or does he work with GM corporate better? Since the XT4 will come out this fall, the next Q is where is the XT7? A halo car (and perhaps a new Escalade) would be great too. . . . in 2020 and no later than that. Oh, and someone needs to tell the new guy to scrap CUE and start over period. The last thing Cadillac needs is an infotainment system that is slow and clunky and badly requiring a rethink. People will ditch Cadillac for the competition over this very issue. Also, will Cadillac replace CUE on earlier models please?
