  1. I could see three of those five plants shutting down sooner than later. Does GM need Baltimore AND Warren? In theory, GM could simply consolidate those two into one facility. As for the other three, two can be shut down with no ill effects on GM's bottom line. Sad as it is, This is not 1980 or even 2005. Consolidation and efficiency are the orders of the day. Wall Street Demands it and Commands it. All other will follow.
  2. Unfortunately, GM is competitive with the other brands as opposed to class-leading in the fuel efficiency department. There are two ways to fix this: either cut weight (at least 700-1000 lbs.) or improve engine MPG. Maybe that turbo 4cyl needs to be tuned better; alternatively maybe the 4.3 V6 was not as bad as rumored.
  3. Hm, where to get the money for better product? May I suggest ending FIAT and funneling that cash towards upgrading Maserati? Makes a lot more sense than wasting a dime on FIAT.
  4. I can't wait. I will be glad when all automakers have two platforms: one BOF and one unibody. That would solve a whole lot of problems and radically reduce costs.
  5. Given all the RAV4s and Highlanders they are selling, reducing Camry production makes a ton of sense. All of a sudden, Ford's call to eliminate (most) sedan production does not look so desperate.
  6. Hope that the alliance has a plan B beyond Ghosn. A one-man juggernaut, once taken down, is often hard to replace.
  7. Whoever does GM marketing should be fired. Then hire the best, regardless of which marketing firm does the account for a different automaker.
  8. A plug-in hybrid Cadillac IS NOT what the doctor ordered. Cadillac needs to build a pure EV model, not a PHEV. Sorry, but until Cadillac builds a CT6 that is a superior Volt (or Bolt), no one will or should buy it. Call me when Cadillac builds direct competitors to Tesla's all-electric vehicle line, and not one minute earlier.
  9. Ah yes, Hyundai/KIA back in the 1990s. Only when the 10yr/100,000mi warranty debuted in 2001 did Hyundai/KIA shed their reputation for poor quality. Cheapness is another story.
  10. GM makes the Envision in China because for every Buick that sells here, four are sold in China. The Encore is already made in South Korea (the former Daewoo plants are now owned by GM); GM has them shipped to China or here in NA. Whether it is parts or final assembly, the era where GM or Ford or FCA make virtually everything in the USA is long gone. Supply chains are global and automakers are exploiting that. If you want your next Chevy Trax to have MSRP to rival a Cadillac XT4, then the president should seek to have insanely high tariffs on cars AND car parts. Consumers automatically lose when that happens. IOW, tariffs are still bad. New car prices are quite high as they are.
  11. Indeed. Never underestimate the power of stupidity. OR Hubris.
  12. The bully only cares about the bully and nobody else. Hence why trade wars can be misused or abused by said bully.
  13. I understand why VW would move Passat production out of Germany. Too bad VW will not build this EV CUV in, say, Chattanooga.
  14. Toyota should, but unfortunately they will not leave anytime soon.
  15. Actually, I am FOR Ford replacing their current CARS with VW-built ones (excluding the Mustang!). Think about it: no one really buys Ford CARS anymore (SUV/CUVs yes, cars no), so it seems that Ford and VW should do what they do best. As for the Routan, the idea was sound but the execution was not there. Anybody with a clue knew it was still a Chrysler minivan with a VW logo on it. As we have seen, there were few if any takers when they existed on dealerships, excluding those that were heavily discounted. One question: is VW build quality as good as (or better than) Ford build quality?
  16. A small Lexus in Japan does make a lot of sense. They rarely sell an LS series or a GX series over there anyway.
  17. No need to have Mini in the USA. It belongs in Europe. Nobody here likes small cars.
  18. The Idea might succeed IF the entire business model was subscription-only. Usually that means either a new car company OR a new division within an existing one. Once you have fully automated self-driving cars prove themselves, then this model can work. Just not right now.
  19. I could see a strategic alliance between the two that can be mutually beneficial. One question: who will be in charge of said alliance?
  20. I like this commercial especially, but Ford cannot afford to be a BOF Truck/SUV firm only. Mustang aside, Ford needs more and better products in the unibody side of things.
  21. An EV Camaro for racing? Great idea. Maybe GM might build one for an Equinox . . . .
  22. I did not know that KIA was trying to get into the next Fast and Furious movie with this car.
  23. Seems to be an improvement over the last front end. . . . . unlike Toyota/Lexus.
  24. Q: who wants to buy the last generation pickup truck when the new generation pickup is on sale on the same dealer lot? Especially at MSRP?!
