From AN: Bradford Wernle DETROIT -- General Motors is calling off talks with Cerberus Capital Management LP about a possible acquisition of Chrysler LLC. GM CEO Rick Wagoner, without naming Chrysler specifically, confirmed the end of the negotiations during a conference call with journalists today. "We have recently explored the possibility of such an acquisition based on the analysis that it would strengthen our industry position in the long term," Wagoner said. "We've concluded at this particular time that we are better off to put 100 percent of our efforts on the liquidity side. We've set aside such (acquisition) actions as a near term priority." Chrysler spokesperson Shawn Morgan confirmed Chrysler was aware of the GM statement but declined further comment on the talks. Chrysler issued its own ...

I guess they had to name it something. Plus, I think that Hyundai wanted to reserve the Tiburon name for a possible lower end FWD coupe.
-
I agree. But I'm glad it's another entry into the RWD, 2+2, segment. And one which fills a niche similar to Nissan's old 240SX.
-
0-60 times seem to similar for the V6 Genesis and V6 Camaro. GM claims 0-60 of 6.1 seconds for the Camaro and I've seen anywhere from 5.9-6.3 seconds for the Genesis.

Okay, it ain't pretty - but in alot of ways I'm jealous. How right for the times would a 3300 lbs, turbo-4, 30 MPG, base model Camaro be?

Here's a buttload of info: Hyundai Releases Additional Engineering and Feature Information for the All-New 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Genesis Coupe Delivers an Estimated 30 MPG Last update: 6:35 p.m. EDT Oct. 30, 2008 FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Oct 30, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Hyundai released additional engineering and feature information for the all-new 2010 Genesis Coupe today. The Genesis Coupe, and its rear-wheel drive platform-mate the Genesis sedan will make their Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show debuts next week. "One of the program targets for the Genesis engineering team was world-class weight efficiency," said John Krafcik, vice president, Product Development and Strategic Planning, Hyundai Motor America. "When you look at the size and content of both Genesis models, you'll find we lead all our competitors in weight efficiency. We also target leadership in power-to-weight ratio. We think that's just smart strategy in today's world. It pays huge dividends in both performance and fuel economy, and that's especially important in the segments in which these cars compete." Vehicle Engine Curb Weight (pounds) Length (inches) Genesis sedan 3.8-liter V6 3748 195.9 Genesis sedan 4.6-liter V8 4012 195.9 Genesis Coupe 2.0-liter turbo 3303 182.3 Genesis Coupe 3.8-liter V6 3402 182.3 Both Genesis Coupe and sedan are rich in ultra-high-strength steel, leading to world-class body rigidity. The Genesis sedan is 10-12 percent stiffer in torsion than Lexus and Mercedes-Benz competitors, yet it is lighter than these benchmark sedans, and offers more interior room. At just 3,303 pounds, the Genesis Coupe 2.0T is hundreds of pounds lighter than all of its IRS-equipped rear-wheel-drive competitors, with body-bending rigidity 24 percent higher than BMW E46 M3. Vehicle Length Curb Weight Horsepower Power-to-weight (lbs.) ratio Genesis Coupe 3.8 182.3 3402 310 (est.) 11.0 BMW 335i 181.1 3571 300 11.9 Infiniti G37 183.1 3616 330 11.0 Camaro LS 190.4 3780 300 (est.) 12.6 Challenger 197.7 3819 250 15.3 This focus on weight efficiency pays dividends across the board. The Genesis sedan owes its ability to deliver both strong performance (0-60 mph in just 5.7 seconds) and excellent fuel economy (25 mpg EPA highway rating) in great part due to its impressive weight efficiency. Similarly, the Genesis Coupe 2.0T sets a new benchmark for front-engine, rear-wheel-drive gasoline fuel efficiency with a remarkable 30 mpg estimated EPA highway rating, because of its weight-efficient platform and its efficient 2.0-liter, low-pressure, turbocharged four-cylinder engine. "While some turbochargers sacrifice smooth drivability with high operating boost pressures in the 20 psi range, Genesis Coupe uses a refined, low-boost calibration for smoothness and efficiency," said Derek Joyce, Genesis Coupe product manager. "We could have opted solely for big performance numbers, but our focus for the 2.0T was a more balanced package." Genesis Coupe product highlights With the start of U.S. market production now just a few months away, Hyundai Motor America is releasing model configuration and color choices for the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe. "Genesis sedan has set a new benchmark for the $35,000-$40,000 premium sedan, and we think Genesis Coupe will do the same in the sport coupe segment," Krafcik said. "From our 30-mpg 2.0T with its low-pressure intercooled 4-cylinder turbo, to the 3.8 Track model with an estimated 310-hp and Brembo braking system, Genesis Coupe offers a wide range of powertrain and performance choices for driving enthusiasts of all stripes." http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/News/...;mktid=cj260233 FOUNTAIN VALLEY, California — Hyundai made it clear that the 2010 Genesis Coupe is targeting the newest American muscle cars and BMW's perennial powerhouse when it released the car's specifications on Thursday. Hyundai notes the 3.8-liter Genesis coupe weighs in at 3,402 pounds and has a better power-to-weight ratio than the BMW 335i, Chevrolet Camaro LS or Dodge Challenger. The Genesis Coupe's base engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 making an estimated 220 horsepower and 223 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual will be the standard transmission; a five-speed automatic is optional. Top speed is expected to be 137 mph, with highway fuel economy estimated at 30 mpg. Hyundai will offer a Track model of the four-cylinder coupe, but the top four-banger will be the R-Spec model with performance add-ons and comfort conveniences targeted at tuners. The second engine, a 3.8-liter V6, is the weapon the Koreans hope to use to swipe market share from the U.S. makers' products and from BMW. It will make about 310 hp and will be paired to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Top speed is predicted to be 149 mph. The 3.8 Track model mates the V6 engine with four-piston Brembo brake calipers, a limited-slip differential and 19-inch gunmetal wheels wrapped in high-performance summer rubber. A tweaked suspension includes stiffer springs, new dampers, a 25mm stabilizer bar in the front and a 22mm stabilizer bar in the rear. Aluminum pedals, foglamps, a rear spoiler, a blacked-out rear fascia and aero windshield wipers are also included on the Track car. In total, there are seven models of the Genesis coupe. Standard equipment includes keyless entry, USB audio and Bluetooth connectivity and steering-wheel audio controls. Range-topping trims offer features like xenon HID headlights, an Infinity audio system, heated front seats, a reverse warning system and a navigation system. Inside Line says: The only thing Hyundai failed to include was a 0-60-mph time. — Eric Tingwall, Correspondent

The "update" it's getting I believe, is the replacement of the N*with a GDI 3.6 and A6.

Yeah, GME was a HUGE cash drain for awhile. -
Detroit News: "GM will announce 'important changes'"

Me too. I can't imagine anything good being announced. -
Well, I guess I'm in the club now. I just got banned from CZ28 for comparing data from the V6 Genesis coupe with V6 Camaro. They called it "flame baiting".

Driving Away Excitement...G8 dead in 5 years

Obama: It's not "fair" to want anything more than a G3. If you are "wealthy" enough to want more than that, then you should be "patriotic" enough to pay me more taxes so I can "spread your wealth" to more deserving people of my choosing. Now stop complaining and get back to work, so you can pay for my social(ist) experiment. -

Actually, promising an "American BMW" to the restless, indoctrinated masses and delivering a socialist, redistributive G3 sounds EXACTLY like the Obama campaign. I guess it all depends on how you look at it...... -
Yeah, you're right - that was an insult to goatfarkers worldwide. My apologies.
-
I've never been banned, but I've gotten lots of stern warnings from a certain Camaro site for discussing the 2010 Camaro's excess weight and had several dozen of my posts/threads on the subject deleted. I''ve also gotten a 2 week suspension on another site for calling Osama Bin Laden a goat fv(ker.

Driving Away Excitement...G8 dead in 5 years
Chazman replied to mustang84's topic in Heritage Marques
Well, first off.... I can't imagine that Pontiac will still be selling the G8 by 2014. That is, if Pontiac or even GM still exist by then. -
I wonder how many "success is right around the corner" periods we've gone through since then?
-
I hope that you're right, we'll see.....
-
Yeah, I was at the unveiling, and yes, there was alot of positive energy there. But that was almost three years ago, and this car has been overexposed. Plus, the production car has grown compared to the concept.
-
Well, we'll see. Certainly I'd say, that a 5th gen Z/28 is probably not a very high priority at GM right now. And eventhough I consider myself an avid Z/28 enthusiast, I can't really say that I'd be interested in purchasing such a hefty Z/28 - it just contradicts the whole Z/28 formula. With that said, I can see some halo marketing potential for the Camaro brand here. A Z/28 package can be an incredibly powerful marketing icon for the Camaro brand. Important, since beyond some enthusiast sites, I detect no excitement for this Zeta based 5th gen Camaro from the general populace.
-
One other thought... There has been lots of buzz, both on the internet and at Indy last month, regarding what's happening with the Z/28. Will it come or will it not come this gen . Considering that the original 5th gen Z/28 proposal weighed in at around 4100 pounds in full LSA regalia, I'm not sure if the world is really ready for a (GASP!) 4100 pound Camaro, regardless of how much power it puts out. The other thing, will this gen Camaro even be around long enough to warrant the developement of a Z/28 package for it? So........... if you were king of GM, would you spend those Z/28 developement dollars on a shortlived Zeta Camaro, or would you attempt to roll that money into a truly phenominal, smaller, lighter, more nimble, next gen Z/28 package.

I think Alpha right now is alot of computer math and design studio clay. I'd be shocked if there were any running prptotypes at this point.

If GM decides to kill/emasculate Pontiac...
Chazman replied to Camino LS6's topic in Heritage Marques
I'd like to hear that too. I can tell you that circa '02/'03 Pontiac had a pretty hot line up planned based on FWD/AWD and supercharged/turbocharged engines. It's halo would have been an especially hot AWD coupe with a SC'd V6. I don't know what it was based on, but I imagined it was Epsilon. I was told that the M3 was it's performance benchmark. I don't know what happened, but as soon as Pontiac announced that it would be importing the GTO, everything changed for Pontiac. -
Well? Will they?
-
I've been told that one of Alpha's top priorities is to control mass. GM does NOT want a repeat of what happened to Zeta with it's out of control weight.
