    War is Hell

I do not believe that I have ever hit an animal. I respect soldiers, but detest the politicans who them into wars. Some men - not me - seem to thrive in the military. A young man in his early twenties worked in my office for three years, but was a mediocre, lazy employee. However, he joined the Marine Reserves and now is going to Officer Candidate School and is doing well. After recently reading "The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History," I do believe that this country could have avoided most of the wars it's gotten into.
  2. The van is probably 3 years away, and there probably won't be much information for another 2 years.
  3. The Camry, Corolla, Tacoma, and RX330, maybe the Prius for a certain demographic, seem to be the core, blockbuster sellers, while most everything else does well for a year or two, then runs out of steam.
  4. If the American people agreed with Regfootball, someone like Dick Gephardt would be President now. Many people work for and financially benefit from foreign owned companies and embrace globalism.
  5. Escape and Econoline do OK for their markets.
  6. I believe that Wagoner is trying to do right for the workers of GM to the best of his ability, and I believe he deserves credit for that. Also, he knows his weakness when it comes to product development, which is why he brought in Lutz, and hopefully we will be delighted when Lutz vehicles debut for the 2008 model years.
  7. After the Rover fiasco, BMW will never agree to another merger. The healthiest automakers are those who have avoided having partners, so I want GM to stay by itself.
  8. I have always enjoyed Ezra Dyer's articles in Automobile, and I enjoyed this article as well.
  9. In the unlikely event this deal happens, I personally see only Chevrolet and maybe Cadillac surviving. Epsilon II will be replaced with the Altima platform, and Zeta and Sigma will be replaced with Nissan's RWD platform. GM's 4 cylinder, V6, and Northstar engines will replaced with Nissan's comparable engines. But I don't think it will happen because I don't see any benefits for Nissan and few benefits for GM. I think that the last 15 years have taught us that most big deals like this fail (BMW/Rover, Ford/Jaguar) or are only marginally successful (with the exception of Nissan/Renault, and there are some recent signs of weakness). GM needs to sink or swim on its own.
  10. Not if they have to deal with the UAW.
  11. Buick - full size Zeta sedan Cadillac - full size Sigma to replace both DTS and STS Chevrolet - everything needs to be a hit, from trucks to Zeta Impala to Malibu and Cobalt. Pontiac - Epsilon II G6 (The Grand Am/G6 has been a core model for Pontiac for 20 years, so this is more important than the GTO or G8.) Saturn - Aura is nice, but Saturn could use an excellent small car to take on the Civic and Corolla.

    C&G survey

He's right. I put down I would buy a Z28. But in reality, there's only a 2 percent chance I would buy a Camaro. There is a 25 percent chance I would buy a Zeta Impala when I am ready to buy a car. But I am pessimistic about future fuel prices and expect that my next car will be far more fuel efficient than my current car, and none of the Zetas will be very fuel efficient.

    Bengal

I think that the next generation Lucerne will look more like an Enclave sedan than an Australian Stateman.
  14. I would think that the 4200 is also more expensive to produce than any of the V8's.
  15. I would prefer the cursing to be limited to the lounge, where sexual and other personal topics often come up. I do not understand why Northstar finds he has to curse so much.
  16. No matter what you say, some of these guys seem to think we can return to the glory days of the 1970's and early 1980's.
  17. I think it was originally Chevrolet's version of the 1969 Grand Prix, which was the first of the lower priced personal luxury coupes on the intermediate platform. The Thunderbird was much more expensive and competed with the Riviera and Toronado. Ford didn't compete in the lower priced personal luxury coupe market until the 1974 Gran Torino Elite and much more effectively with the lower priced 1977 Thunderbird.
  18. My recollection - and it could well be flawed - is that the original plan was for the 1985 N body coupes to replace the 1981 G body coupes. Things were very depressing in the country in the late 1970's and early 1980's, and there were great fears about future oil prices. The Grand Am was supposed to replace the Grand Prix, the Somerset Regal was supposed to be the Regal, and the Calais was supposed to be the Cutlass Supreme. However, after fuel prices dropped, the G bodies remained in production and the N bodies were renamed and replaced or supplemented the X bodies, as sedan versions were added for 1986. I may be wrong about this, but GM did not originally plan to let the G body coupes stagnate for so long. Of course, GM then developed the expensive W body program, which was a mess at the beginning.
  19. I recall from reading Automotive News 20 years ago that sales of the G body coupes began to drop markedly after the 1984 model year.
  20. I think that anyone who can afford a trailer can also afford the $10,000 more for a Tahoe.
  21. Wait and see what happens when oil prices keep increasing over the next few years before you scoff at what he says.
  22. Well, I edited my message because I don't want to offend anyone. I often edit my messages a few minutes after I type them. However, a vehicle the size of the Aveo should get at least 30 mpg city and over 40 on the highway.
  23. That makes a lot of sense.
  24. It doesn't matter to me if the Vibe is a Chevrolet or Pontiac, but it is more fuel efficient than anything GM sells now. If marketed properly, it should sell much better than it does.
  25. If we invade Venezuela or Iran, we would have $10/gallon gas and the stock market would drop 80 percent.Back to mid size SUV's, unless you go off-road, I don't know why anyone would pick an Explorer or TrailBlazer over either a full size SUV or a crossover.
