  1. While car sales are down, the number of people opting for loan lengths from 73 to 84 months is going up. Karl Kruppa, senior automotive solutions consultant for Experian said at a conference last week that the share of 73 to 84 months car loans has been rising over the past eight years. Through February of this year, 33.8 percent of loans were for terms longer than 73 months. Other numbers to take into consideration, In the fourth quarter of 2010, three-fourths of new-car loans were between 73 to 75 months. Only 17.1 percent of loans were 84 months. Fast forward to the fourth quarter of 2016 and 28.7 percent of new car loans reached 84 months. Why the sudden increase? It might be due to buyers seeing the small payments on an expensive vehicle, without taking into consideration fully about the length of the loan. More worrying however is the growing popularity of long-term loans on used vehicles. Most of these loans are being used on late-model vehicles - about 30 percent of 2016 model year vehicles are being financed with 73 to 84-month terms. But long-term loans are being used on vehicles that are five years or older. "You know what's kind of startling? There's actually 10 percent of [2010 model-year] used vehicles being financed at a term between 73 and 84 months.   3. The echo of a sad trombone could be heard when Honda announced that the new Civic Si would only produce 205 horsepower from a turbocharged 1.5L four-cylinder. Fans were hoping for a bit more power and Honda's engineers say there is more power on tap. But there are two key reasons as to why the Japanese automaker did this. The engineers said "you can tune more power into it, but all of that takes away from the durability of the engine," said Rob Keough, senior product planner on the Civic to Automotive News. "Honda likes to build their engines to last hundreds of thousands of miles, so they're working toward that target." The other reason comes down to price. Honda wanted to keep the Si affordable while adding some impressive performance parts such as a limited-slip differential and adaptive suspension. "The Si has always been in the [price] range that it's in. We wanted it to be attainable and affordable, so our target for Si was really to come in at this price point with this performance level," said Keough. For example, if Honda was to use a detuned version of the turbo 2.0L found in the Civic Type R, that would push the price to nearly $30,000. Keough didn't rule out the possibility of there being a variant between the Si and Type R that would offer a bit more power. He also didn't rule out using a detuned Type R motor for this model.   5. The diesel emission scandal has once again flared up as Audi stands accused of using illegal software on certain A7 and A8 TDI models. Yesterday, German Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced that Audi employed illegal software to cheat emission tests on certain A7 and A8 models built between 2009 to 2013. The affected models are said to emit twice the legal limit of nitrogen oxides when the steering wheel is turned more than 15 degrees - a condition that would happen in the real world and not in the lab. German tabloid Bild reported that Volkswagen Group CEO Matthias Mueller was summoned to the transport ministry. A ministry spokesman confirmed Muller's visit to Reuters. The ministry has requested the company to issue a recall on the two models - 24,000 in total with 14,000 of those registered in Germany - and set a deadline for June 12 for a plan to retrofit the vehicles with legal software. Audi did issue the recall last night and said it has a fix coming in July. According to a source, the issue deals with the interaction between transmission and engine control units and that a fix has been submitted to Germany's transportation watchdog, the KBA.   7. Later this summer, Hyundai will be revealing a new subcompact crossover called the Kona. To prepare us, the company has released some teasers. But thanks to some magic from Photoshop, we have a good idea of what it will look like. The front end comes with Hyundai's new grille that made its debut on the Sonata and a similar headlight arrangement like the Jeep Cherokee. There is also a little slit above the grille. Other design details on the Kona include black body cladding, significant sculpting on the doors, and a partly blacked-out rear pillar. We don't any mechanical details, but we're assuming it will be based on the redesigned Accent.   9. You might think the vehicle caught by a spy photographer is a Volkswagen Tiguan mule. But you would be incorrect. What you're looking at is the next-generation Volkswagen Touareg. While Volkswagen has been clever with applying camouflage strategic points, the longer length and taller body give away its true identity. Is it expected that the Touareg will be similar in design to the Tiguan. Car and Driver reports the next Touareg will transition to the MLB Evo platform that currently underpins the Audi Q7. Unlike the Q7, the Touareg will cut a few inches out of the wheelbase as it will only come with two rows of seating. V6 power is expected, though it is unclear whether it will be the 3.6L VR6 found in the Atlas or Audi's 3.0L supercharged V6. An eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive will come standard. BMW Group U.S. Reports May 2017 Sales BMW brand sales decrease 11.0 percent MINI brand sales decrease 11.6 percent Woodcliff Lake, NJ – June 1, 2017… Sales of BMW brand vehicles decreased 11.0 percent in May for a total of 25,818 compared to 29,017 vehicles sold in May 2016. Year-to-date, the BMW brand is down 3.6 percent in the U.S. on sales of 120,124 vehicles compared to 124,581 sold in the first five months of 2016. Notable vehicle sales in May include the BMW 5 Series which increased 12.7 percent to 3,677 cars, the BMW X1 which increased 12.6 percent to 2,489 vehicles, and the BMW X3 which increased 21.7 percent to 4,011 vehicles. “Our all-new BMW 5 Series is now showing its strength as availability increases and production begins to match demand,” said Bernhard Kuhnt, President and CEO, BMW of North America. “At the same time, demand for BMW Sports Activity Vehicles remains solid with the X1 and the X3 delivering the standout numbers for May” BMW Group Sales In total, the BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported May sales of 29,878 vehicles, a decrease of 11.1 percent from the 33,612 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, BMW Group sales are down 4.8 percent on sales of 137,916 vehicles in the first five months of 2017 compared to 144,811 in the same period in 2016. MINI Brand Sales For May, MINI USA reported 4,060 automobiles sold, a decrease of 11.6 percent from the 4,595 sold in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, MINI USA reported a total of 17,792 automobiles sold, a decrease of 12.1 percent from 20,230 automobiles sold in the first five months of 2016.

  16. Porsche Reports May 2017 Sales U.S. Porsche Dealers sell 4,805 vehicles ATLANTA, June 1, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), importer and distributor of Porsche 911, 718 Boxster and Cayman, Panamera, Cayenne, and Macan model lines in the United States, today announced 4,805 vehicle sales in May 2017. Year-to-date sales stand at 23,052, up 3.7 percent over last year. May sales were boosted by demand for the Macan and Panamera model lines. Macan deliveries continued to soar with 1,730 units, a 21.3 percent increase over May 2016. Year-to-date, Macan sales are up 26.9 percent and stand at 8,767 vehicles. Panamera outpaced last year's May result by 114.5 percent with 768 cars sold. Year-to-date Panamera sales are 2,483 vehicles, a 46.7 percent increase over last year. Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) vehicle sales in the U.S. were 1,568. Year-to-date CPO sales stand at 7,490, an 8.8 percent increase over the same period last year.   19. Nissan Group reports May 2017 U.S. sales NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nissan Group today announced total U.S. sales for May 2017 of 137,471 units, an increase of 3 percent over the prior year. Nissan highlights: Nissan Division finished May with 124,957 sales, up 2 percent. Overall sales of Nissan crossovers, trucks and SUVs set a May record, up 22 percent. Sales of the Rogue crossover set a May record with sales 32,533, up 19 percent. Nissan Titan sales increased 436 percent to 4,937. Nissan Armada sales climbed to 2,487, up 213 percent. Nissan’s commercial van models, NV and NV200, each set May records.
