Researchers Say EcoDiesel Models Spew More Pollution Than Legally Allowed
William Maley posted an article in Fiat
The university that first uncovered excess emissions coming out of Volkswagen's diesel models has turned their attention to Fiat Chrysler Automobile's 3.0L EcoDiesel V6. Their results show that models equipped with this engine spew as much as 20 times the legal limit for emissions. Bloomberg reports the West Virginia University’s Center for Alternative Fuels, Engines and Emissions tested five Jeep Grand Cherokees and Ram 1500s from the 2014 and 2015 model years in the lab and out on the road. Why 2014 and 2015 model year vehicles? According to the Wall Street Journal, this is due to another emission issue dealing with 2014 models having their catalytic converter replaced. The university found that in real-world driving, the models emitted between 3 to 20 times the legal limit for Nitrogen oxide (NOx). “We saw emissions results in simulated on-road cycles on chassis dynamometers that were much lower than the actual on-road results were, suggesting that the vehicle was controlled in different fashions,” said Daniel Carder, director of the center to Bloomberg. FCA has called the university’s findings into question. In a statement released yesterday, the company has reached out to the university to get more information on how the tests were done. FCA says the comparison between the on-road tests done by the university and EPA lab tests are invalid. The researchers drove some of the vehicles at a higher speed than in the lab and that there was more weight in the vehicle than what is required by regulators. There is also an interesting tidbit from FCA's statement. "Based upon court filings and discussions with CAFEE, this testing appears to have been commissioned by a plaintiffs’ law firm for purposes of litigation." When asked by Bloomberg on who commissioned the research, Carder declined. Source: Bloomberg, Wall Street Journal (Subscription Required), Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Press Release is on Page 2 June 13, 2017 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US has recently been made aware of on-road emissions testing conducted on two of the Company’s diesel-powered vehicles by West Virginia University’s Center for Alternative Fuels Engines and Emissions (CAFEE). Based upon court filings and discussions with CAFEE, this testing appears to have been commissioned by a plaintiffs’ law firm for purposes of litigation. FCA US has asked CAFEE to discuss its testing methodology and share the resulting data for the Company’s understanding, and to determine which on-road test results could conceivably be compared with results from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) laboratory procedures. CAFEE has been unwilling to discuss the report. The CAFEE report implies it would be appropriate to compare its on-road test results with those of one of five required EPA test procedures – each of which is conducted off-road, under laboratory conditions. However, CAFEE’s reported on-road results fail to consider that its tests were conducted: at average speeds more than 50% greater than those in the EPA test procedure with 600-700 lbs. more payload than is used in the EPA test procedure under road conditions (e.g., grades) that are not representative of those in the EPA test procedure Each of the above may increase emissions readings, therefore rendering invalid a comparison of on-road and off-road test results. Further, the aggregation of these variations makes any comparison misleading. Despite the report, there is no regulatory protocol for conducting on-road emissions testing. The report also indicates that the vehicles were modified by CAFEE prior to testing ostensibly in an effort to replicate a prior recall. FCA US has formally filed an application for diesel vehicle emissions certification with the EPA and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for its 2017 model year (MY) Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 diesel vehicles, the latest model year of the same vehicles apparently tested by CAFEE. FCA US has updated the emissions software calibrations in this MY 2017 certification proposal. The updated calibrations are the result of many months of close collaboration between FCA US and EPA and CARB, including extensive testing of the vehicles, to clarify issues related to the Company’s emissions control technology. FCA US continues to discuss improved software calibrations with the agencies. Subject to the permission of EPA and CARB, FCA US intends to install the same modified emissions software in 2014-2016 MY Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 diesel vehicles. FCA US believes this will address the agencies’ concerns regarding the emissions software calibrations in those vehicles.- 18 comments

The BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo answered a question that no one outside of BMW was asking. It wasn't a pleasing vehicle to look at which affected sales. Still, BMW believes in the Gran Turismo and has decided to make the successor part of the 6-Series family. Thus, the 2018 BMW 6-Series GT. We're still not sold on the whole Gran Turismo idea BMW is trying to put out there, but we have to admit the 6-Series GT is a major improvement in terms of looks. BMW's designers took the design of the 3-Series GT and made it larger to create this model. Compared to the 5-Series GT, the 6-Series GT is about 4-inches longer in overall length and an inch shorter in overall height. The interior is the same as the new 5-Series which isn't a bad thing as it comes with a center stack oriented to the driver, 10.25-inch screen featuring the latest version of BMW's iDrive, and leather upholstery. Rear passengers will enjoy the abundance of rear legroom on offer thanks to the longer length of the vehicle. The U.S. will only get one engine - a 3.0L twin-turbo inline-six producing 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic. BMW quotes a 0-60 mph time of 5.1 seconds - significantly quicker than the 535i's time of 6.1 seconds. Some of this improvement can be directed at BMW dropping around 221 pounds out of the 6-Series GT. The 6-Series GT will also be the first BMW model to introduce Active Driving Assistant - a new name for the brand's suite of active safety features. This includes blind spot monitoring, front collision warning. lane departure warning, pedestrian detection, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control, front cross-traffic alert, and lane keep assist are available through an option package. The 6-Series GT arrives in BMW showrooms this fall with a starting price of $70,695. Unparalleled progressive appeal and practicality. The all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo design embodies a rigorous process of development which has elevated both the functional strengths of this concept and the car’s sense of sporting elegance. A generously-sized, flexible-use interior, striking looks, ride comfort, and a luxurious and spacious feel are amongst the features that make this vehicle unique. These attributes have been honed for the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo and are complemented by stretched proportions, dynamic lines and a muscular look. “The all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is geared towards discerning customers who place great importance on individuality. It is an eye-catching statement, packaged into a flowing, sculptural design language which gives the car a modern and sporty feel. The raised seating position ensures an imperious brand of driving pleasure, and the luxurious levels of space provide everything you need for a relaxing journey,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. Dynamically stretched proportions. The all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo showcases dynamically stretched proportions. In combination with a roofline that flows deep into the rear end, the proportions ensure an elegantly sporty appearance. Thanks to optimization of the cabin’s packaging, the interior offers ample rear headroom (38.5 inches). Among the other characteristic features of the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo are its long trunk, the set-back positioning of the cabin, wheelbase of 120.9 inches, doors with frameless windows, and a slim window graphic that leads into a more vertical interpretation of the signature BMW “Hofmeister kink”. The front end: distinctive, eye-catching and powerful. The large BMW kidney grille underlines the muscular presence of the front end. The headlight housings extend all the way to the kidneys, creating a continuous band that accentuates the car’s width. The standard Icon Adaptive Full LED Headlights feature hexagonal LED tubes for the daytime running lights that extend to meet the kidney grille, reinforcing the broad and dynamic presence of the front end. The flanks: flowing lines, precise surfaces. When the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is viewed from the side, its elongated proportions and precise surface design catch the eye. A single crease in the upper section of the side surfaces sends light rushing to this section of the body. Above the powerfully flared wheel arches, a second horizontal line worked smoothly into the surface, generates an effective interchange between light and shadow, which lends the car extra lightness and elegance. Its ground clearance is emphasized by the shaded surfaces above the side skirts. The Air Breathers and side skirts form a single unit and team up with another crease in the surface work to enhance the stretched feel of the silhouette. The heavily raked A-pillars of the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo are linked with the roofline reaching its highest point at the top of the B-pillar, flowing like a coupe’s into the rear. The distinctive elegance of the silhouette is also accentuated by the sweeping side window graphic, which is no longer broken up by an extra window guide strip through the rear passenger door windows. The rear end: width enhances sporting presence, sculptural light design. Horizontal lines, sharp edges and heavily tapering surfaces help to magnify the width of the rear and therefore the sporting stature of the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo. It is an impression strengthened by the slim rear window and rear lights positioned well to the outside. In addition to the customary BMW L-shape, the light units also display a unique three-dimensional surface design. The taillight covers over the LED units to add a bold and classy accent with their attractively sculpted design. Aerodynamically optimized – from Active Kidney Grille to the active rear spoiler. The low-slung silhouette of the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo also benefits its aerodynamic efficiency, which has been improved with a host of other measures. BMW’s Active Kidney Grille system opens moveable slats behind the vertical, fixed kidney grille slats when more cooling air is required, but otherwise keeps them closed to optimize aerodynamic efficiency. The underbody section is almost fully enclosed. Air Curtains in the lower air intake at the front of the car and Air Breathers behind of the front wheels reduce turbulence in and around the wheel arches all improving aerodynamic efficiency. The active rear spoiler, which automatically extends when the car exceeds 75 mph and retracts again when it slows below 50 mph, helps to reduce lift and improve the drag coefficient (Cd). A total of 12 colors, wheels in 19-inch, 20-inch and 21-inch sizes. Two non-metallic and 10 metallic color shades are available for the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo. Customers can choose from a total of 3 different light-alloy wheels (19-inch and 20-inch). The Original BMW Accessories range also includes 21-inch light-alloy rims. Powertrain, driving experience and BMW EfficientLightweight. A fine balance of sporty performance and ride comfort. The 6-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine for the all-new BMW 640i xDrive Gran Turismo has been selected from the latest generation of the BMW Group portfolio. The remarkable effectiveness of the engine paired to the 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission with shift paddles, optimized aerodynamics, and its weight-saving construction make the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo a sporting performer with the highest level of efficiency. More powerful gasoline engine. The engine features an aluminum construction, optimized thermodynamics and cutting-edge BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The package of technology is made up of TwinScroll turbocharging, High Precision Direct Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve lift control and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. New engine encapsulation reduces noise and accelerates warm-up. The 3.0-liter 6-cylinder inline gasoline engine under the hood of the all-new BMW 640i xDrive Gran Turismo generates maximum output of 335 hp and puts peak torque of 332 lb-ft on tap between 1,380 and 5,200 rpm provide a 5.1 seconds sprint from 0-60 mph. Intelligent networking optimizes dynamics and efficiency. With the help of intelligent networking, the 8-speed Steptronic transmission can adapt its shift strategy to the current driving situation. Utilizing the map database from the standard Navigation system Professional, the intelligent transmission management takes its cues from the upcoming route. For example, on the basis of navigation data it can perform an early downshift when approaching an intersection, in order to take full advantage of the engine braking effect. It also allows unnecessary gear changes to be prevented when taking two bends in quick succession. If ECO PRO mode is selected using the Driving Dynamics Control switch, the coasting function decouples the powertrain whenever the driver lifts off the accelerator between 30 – 100 mph. Intelligent networking also improves the efficiency-boosting effect of the Auto Start Stop function. The control unit uses data from the navigation system and the driver assistance systems’ cameras and radar sensors to prevent the engine being switched off at moments where it would be counterproductive for efficiency – for example when pausing briefly at intersections or traffic circles. Cutting-edge chassis technology, rear-axle air suspension as standard. Thanks to a rigorous round of chassis development, the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo offers lively agility and, at the same time, unbeatable ride quality. The double-wishbone front suspension and five-link rear suspension underpin a smooth balance between dynamic sharpness and comfort. The front suspension decouples the wheel location and damping functions to avoid compromising comfort under high lateral acceleration, allowing the steering to remain as unaffected as possible by bumps in the road. The rear suspension uses light-metal components in the five-link rear suspension, and optimized elastokinematics ensure precise wheel location and excellent directional stability. The large mounting and supporting system also plays an important part in ensuring good acoustic insulation between the powertrain and suspension. Standard specification includes rear-axle air suspension with automatic self-levelling, which maintains a constant ride height regardless of driving situation or payload, while at the same time controlling vibrations. The electromechanical steering system with standard Servotronic function (for speed-sensitive power assistance) offers unbeatable precision in dynamic cornering situations and high levels of comfort when maneuvering in tight spots such as parking lots. The optional Integral Active Steering is likewise electromechanical. Controlled steering of the rear wheels allows it to provide extra agility when cornering, sure-footed responses when changing lanes and easy maneuverability around town. Adaptive suspension and Active Roll Stabilization deliver ride comfort and sporty performance. The Dynamic Handling Package offers an extra dose of sportiness. It complements Dynamic Damper Control and the two-axle air suspension with Active Roll Stabilization and Integral Active Steering. Adaptive suspension with Dynamic Damper Control and two-axle air suspension uses electronically controlled dampers to improve ride and suspension comfort while at the same time sharpen the car’s dynamics. An electrically powered compressor with pressure reservoir supplies the suspension with air and because the air supply is controlled individually for each wheel, it is even possible to compensate for an unevenly distributed load. The two-axle air suspension enables owners to set the car’s ride height manually. Ground clearance can be raised by 0.78 inches at the touch of a button for driving on rough ground or up steep ramps. Once the driver accelerates beyond 22 mph, the self-levelling system automatically reverts to the standard setting. A 0.39 inch drop in ride height can be initiated by pressing a button. This happens automatically at speeds over 75 mph and when SPORT mode is selected using the Driving Dynamic Control switch. Active Roll Stabilization works using electric swivel motors and takes fast, precise action to counteract body roll during dynamic cornering, while also improving comfort in straight-line driving by actively countering bump disturbances affecting only one side of the car. Driving Dynamics Control switch with ADAPTIVE and COMFORT+ mode. As well as ECO PRO mode, the standard Driving Dynamics Control toggle switch is also used to activate the COMFORT and SPORT settings. These different modes, selected at the press of a button, modify the accelerator and steering mapping, the shift characteristics of the Steptronic transmission and the responses of the electronic dampers, if specified. Choosing the Dynamic Handling Package also adds the COMFORT+ and ADAPTIVE modes. These allow drivers to select a particularly comfort-biased set-up or one that responds automatically to their driving style. In ADAPTIVE mode, navigation data from the Navigation system Professional is used to proactively adjust the car’s responses when approaching intersections or curves. BMW EfficientLightweight technology allows for optimized weight distribution and low body weight. Intelligent lightweight construction and the increased use of aluminum and high-strength steels for body and chassis components has optimized the weight of the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo. The doors, the trunk and the car’s tailgate are made from aluminum. The engine cross-member, spring struts and rear trailing arms are among the chassis components made from lightweight metal. Reducing unsprung mass in the wheels and brakes make the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo even more agile. A steel/aluminum compound construction, galvanized, hot and cold-formed steel plates with a zinc/magnesium coating are all used to improve stiffness and passive safety, and reduce weight. Among the latest innovations in manufacturing technology registered under the BMW EfficientLightweight banner are a laser welding technique for the aluminum door shells and glass-fiber reinforced plastic acoustic shielding for the inner door paneling. Controls and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. At the heart of the display and control concept in the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is the iDrive 6.0 system. In addition to the Touch Controller on the center console and the direct menu control and favorites buttons, the system also comprises a new version of the Control Display. The high-resolution unit now takes the form of a freestanding 10.25?inch touchscreen, while intuitive touch control is facilitated by the tile-style menu layout with live content. The Intelligent voice control system has undergone improvement and now also responds to natural voice inputs. The available BMW Gesture Control can be used in the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo too, allowing certain functions to be operated with simple movements of the hand or fingers, which are registered by a 3D sensor in the center console and translated into the relevant commands. The latest generation BMW Head-Up Display, whose projection area has been increased in size by 75 percent reflects driving-related information onto the windshield in full color and with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. BMW Personal CoPilot paving the way to automated driving. The BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is the first BMW with a standard Active Driving Assistant. This system brings a multitude of driving assistant functions made possible through the use of cameras, radars, and ultrasonic sensors that monitor the vehicle’s surroundings. The Active Driving Assistant includes Active Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Daytime Pedestrian Protection, Frontal Collision Warning w/City Collision Mitigation, Speed Limit Info, and Cross-traffic alert rear. The optional Driving Assistant Plus Package also adds Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Active Lane Keeping Assistant with Side Collision Avoidance, Traffic Jam Assistant, Evasion Aid and Cross-traffic alert front. The latest generation ACC with Stop & Go is operational in a speed range from 0 – 130 mph and is capable of braking the vehicle to a standstill. If the vehicle has been placed into standby mode by pushing the resume button on the steering wheel, the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo can automatically start moving again up to 30 seconds after coming to a full-stop, relieving stress on the driver considerably, particularly when driving in stop-start traffic. The system’s sensors can now register two vehicles ahead providing a smoother operation. The Active Lane Keeping Assistant and Traffic Jam Assistant – also active at speeds between 0 and 130 mph – represent another step towards semi-automated driving. It uses road markings and the vehicles driving ahead as a means of orientation and works with the driver to help keep the vehicle in the detected lane with steering assistance. The system designed as a hands-on system, provides up to 50 seconds of hands-off time steering support. A sensitive hands-on-wheel detection recognizes contact even when only a few fingers briefly touch the wheel. The latest generation Active Blind Spot Detection system now ranges from approximately 15 – 130 mph and Lane Departure Warning, which operates from approximately 40 – 130 mph. Lane Departure Warning, alerts the driver if the vehicle is straying out of its lane unintentionally by causing the steering wheel to vibrate. Active Blind Spot Detection monitors maneuvers when changing into a different lane and, if a risk of collision is detected, activates a visual signal in the side-view mirror and vibrates the steering wheel, encouraging the driver to steer the vehicle back into its original lane. Vehicles equipped with the available Active Driving Assistant Plus additionally include Active Lane Keeping Assistant with Side Collision Avoidance and Evasion Aid, which assist the driver with corrective steering. The Side Collision Avoidance system (range approximately 40 – 130 mph) provides corrective steering intervention in situations where a side collision is imminent. In addition, Lane Departure Warning and Active Blind Spot Detection are also supported by the Active Lane Keeping Assistant through corrective steering intervention as part of the warning concept. Evasion Aid assists if a quick lane change is required at speeds between 25 – 100 mph, for example when the vehicle in front brakes aggressively, the evasion aid supports the necessary evasive steering action initiated by the driver. Corrective steering support during an evasive maneuver results in less vehicle instability, assisted by Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). While executing the maneuver, the evasion aid also uses information from the vehicle’s sensor systems to check how much unobstructed space is available around the vehicle. At speeds over 100 mph, the system no longer provides actual steering support and instead focuses on maximizing vehicle stability. Intelligent systems offer a clearer view and warn of dangers. Numerous other systems are designed to help drivers when maneuvering and parking as well as in driving situations with an obstructed view. The all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is equipped as standard with Park Distance Control (PDC), which includes sensors at the front and rear, and a Rear-view camera. Car-to-car communication is now also employed within the inter-connected BMW fleet to provide advance warning of hazardous traffic situations. Information on any detected hazards presented by an accident, a broken-down vehicle, dense fog, heavy rain or black ice, for example, is also relayed to the BMW backend from where it is imported into the navigation system of both the driver’s car and other BMWs in the vicinity. The unique On-Street Parking Information service helps drivers find available street parking space. This function is integrated into the navigation system map in a similar way to Advanced Real Time Traffic, and by using intelligent connectivity it displays the likelihood of available roadside parking spaces based on historical and real-time data. Apple CarPlay available in the car. Apple CarPlay can be used wirelessly in the all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo. The driver can seamlessly switch between BMW and Apple CarPlay via the iDrive controller or touch screen interface. Permanently connected – with the Display Key and Remote 3D View. The BMW Display Key, available exclusively with Remote Control Parking, allows drivers to keep in contact with their BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo around the clock. Besides fuel level and service-related information, the color display can also indicate whether the car’s doors, windows and panoramic glass sunroof are closed. Meanwhile, with the BMW Connected App, the Remote 3D View function shows drivers a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its immediate vicinity, as generated by the Surround View camera system, directly onto their smartphone screen.

Buick News: 2018 Buick Enclave To Begin Just Under $41,000
William Maley replied to William Maley's topic in Buick
When Buick hands out the official pricing list or something else, I'll be able to answer this. -
When the 2018 Buick Enclave hits dealers later this year, it will cost slightly more than the outgoing model. The redesigned full-size crossover will now begin at $40,970, almost $1,000 more than the current model. But considering how much standard equipment the new model comes with, it seems quite fair. All Enclaves feature keyless entry, hands-free liftgate, three-zone automatic climate control, eight-inch infotainment system with Buick Intellilink, Rear Seat Reminder, and Teen Driver. The Essence comes up next and the option of all-wheel drive. Prices begin at $45,190 for the FWD model and $47,190 for AWD. Premium comes next with prices of $48,990 and $51,290 respectively. Topping the Enclave lineup is the new Avenir. Filled with many luxury items such as dual sunroofs, navigation, contrast stitching and piping on the seats, and LED headlights, the top-line Enclave will begin at $54,390 for FWD and $56,690 for AWD. Polestar is best known for building fast Volvos, but they could strike out on their own with building performance electric vehicles. Auto Express has learned that Polestar will use Volvo's SPA Scalable Product Architecture) and CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platforms for their new vehicles. The first one, which is expected to be shown sometime this year will use SPA. According to a source, Geely (parent company of Volvo and Polestar) wants to create a line-up of brands that could rival the likes the of Volkswagen Group. Polestar is being positioned as the performance brand and Geely wants them to expand their lineup along the lines of AMG - building bespoke models along with high-performance models. Volvo will hold down the premium segment, while Lynk & Co and Geely will cover the mainstream. There also Geely purchasing a majority stake into Lotus (who knows where it will fit into this possible hierarchy if approved). Source: Auto Express View full article

This morning in South Korea, Hyundai unveiled the 2018 Kona subcompact crossover. This is a big deal for the Korean automaker as it is the brand's first subcompact crossover. The Kona stands out from Hyundai's other crossovers thanks a polarizing design. Up front, the Kona features Hyundai's new mesh grille that debuted on the 2018 Sonata. The split headlights resemble those found on the Jeep Cherokee. A slim vent above the grille, flared out fenders with cladding, and a two-tone roof finish off the design. “With the Kona, we have created a stylish and highly functional compact SUV, perfectly suited to the needs of customers who pursue challenging, action-filled lifestyles,” said Euisun Chung, Vice Chairman of Hyundai. The Kona's interior isn't as polarizing as the layout is similar to the upcoming Elantra GT/i30 hatchback with a floating screen for the infotainment system. Hyundai is claiming the Kona will have the largest amount of interior space for the class thanks in part to a new architecture it rides on. Various tech features include infotainment systems ranging from 5 to 8-inches, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration; and an optional heads-up display. In terms of power, the U.S. will get the choice of either a 2.0L Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder (147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque) or a turbocharged 1.6L four-cylinder (177 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque). The 2.0 gets a six-speed automatic and the 1.6T comes with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Front-wheel drive comes standard while all-wheel drive is available as an option. Hyundai will also be adding an electric variant that promises a range of 240 miles sometime next year. In terms of safety, the Kona will offer automatic high beams, blind spot monitoring, driver drowsiness monitor, forward collision braking and lane-keep assist. The Kona will go on sale in South Korea this summer, before heading off to the U.S. and Europe later this year. Source: Hyundai Press Release is on Page 2 Kona: World Premiere of an Urban SUV for Active Lifestyles Hyundai Motor launches Kona, its first global B-segment SUV Voluminous, aggressive body styling, complemented by a low and wide stance Advanced technology and class-leading safety features for urban pleasure-seekers Kona All-new sub-compact SUV platform to set new standards for the B-SUV segment June 13, 2017 – Hyundai Motor has unveiled the latest vehicle in its expanding line-up of stylish SUVs, the Kona compact SUV. With a strong, impactful design and uncompromised individuality, the Kona is designed to appeal to modern customers with active lifestyles. The Kona joins Tucson, Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport in a growing line-up of Hyundai Motor SUVs, as the company continues to widen customer choice in the segment. At the world premiere of its new B-segment SUV, Hyundai Motor reaffirmed its promise to deliver SUVs that feature progressive design with high interior refinement and spaciousness. The Kona will go on sale in Korea later this month, followed by North America and Europe. “With the Kona, we have created a stylish and highly functional compact SUV, perfectly suited to the needs of customers who pursue challenging, action-filled lifestyles,” said Euisun Chung, Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor Company. “We aim to set new standards for the compact SUV segment, with appealing design, cutting-edge connectivity and class leading safety features.” Uncompromised individuality and purposeful character The Kona is a brand-new challenger in the B-SUV segment, with uncompromised individuality and innovative features. The Kona’s bold, daring image hints at the future design direction of Hyundai Motor’s next generation of SUV models and creates a unique proposition in the compact SUV segment. Kona stands out from the crowd with high contrast design elements and striking style. Its masculine protective, ‘armor’, combines powerfully with the futuristic LED lighting to create a high-tech look. Despite its unique appearance, the Kona doesn’t sacrifice sophistication and is highly capable – a combination designed to appeal to the Millennial demographic. Unique and stylish exterior design The Kona’s stand-out design is reinforced by the car’s voluminous, aggressive body styling, that emphasizes the car’s well-proportioned, dynamic silhouette. Its low and wide stance complements the car’s stylish profile, with the long wheel base and short overhangs ensuring sporty, nimble handling, in addition to delivering superior driving stability at high speed. ‘Composite lamps’ enhance the Kona’s high-tech and mechanical appearance. The slim daytime running lights (DRL) incorporate turn signals and are positioned in a ‘stack’, separate to the LED headlights. The Kona’s front is powerful, as its ‘armor’ shows its readiness for extreme activities. The compact SUV also adopts Hyundai Motor’s new family identity, the Cascading Grille, featuring a sporty mesh pattern, flanked by exceptional wing-type fenders that dominate the front design. The visual relationship between the composite lamps, Hyundai's signature Cascading Grille and the unique armor design results in a totally distinct character, which is important in the increasingly competitive B-SUV segment. Further stand-out design elements at the side reinforce the car’s tough and functional qualities. Most notably the contrasting black ‘armor’ that provides a protective skin and visually connects the front to the rear. As with the front LED arrangement, the rear light configuration also creates a truly unique signature appearance. The slim brake lights, turn indicators and reverse lamp are placed in a separate configuration, surrounded by protective skin that begins at the C-pillar garnish. In addition to the instantly recognizable shape, a number of playful color variations allow buyers to customize their Kona. The roof is finished with a two-tone color scheme, providing high contrast between the body and wheels – satisfying customers with a desire to express their individuality. Spacious interior delivers comfort and convenience The unique features of the exterior continue inside, with a strong horizontal character line creating a wide and spacious feel. Even with its compact dimensions and low roof line, the Kona delivers best-in-class interior space. The sleek and simple layout interior contrasts with the bold, adventurous exterior design. The AVN (Audio, Visual, Navigation) monitor incorporates Hyundai Motor’s advanced infotainment features. The monitor appears to float on the dashboard, contributing to the sense of openness. The mechanical air vents and functional button arrangement reflect the high-tech functionality of the exterior. The AVN and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) controls are surrounded by soft, fluid details that contribute to a sensuous experience and enhance the comfort-focused environment. The all-new compact platform has been developed to provide customers with a true SUV experience. SUV-level ground clearance and an elevated seating position ensure better visibility for drivers and increases comfort on long journeys. Kona offers occupants generous interior space by optimizing the underfloor layout, including the 4WD drivetrain and exhaust system, to reduce central tunnel intrusion. The suspension component layout is optimized at the rear, allowing for a lower floor and seating position to deliver class-leading levels of headroom and ease of access for rear occupants. Designers also optimized interior space to maximize luggage storage capabilities, reflecting the requirements of customers with active lifestyles. The split-folding rear seats fold flat, with a two-level loading floor that allows easy access for a bicycle or golf club storage. All-new platform delivers exceptional power and performance With an all-new compact SUV platform developed for the Kona, Hyundai Motor looks to set new performance standards for the compact SUV segment. The powertrain layout is optimized to create a compact platform capable of incorporating the car’s four-wheel-drive system while maintaining interior space. The Kona blends exceptional fuel efficiency with a fun urban driving experience, delivering power and performance levels that are not often found in vehicles in its segment. The range of small-displacement turbo-charged petrol engines and diesel powertrains deliver a dynamic driving experience for nimble, easy motoring. The new Kona is offered with a combination of gasoline and diesel engines of various power outputs – dependent on the market. A 2.0-liter MPI Atkinson engine produces 149PS, with a 0-100km/h time of 10 seconds and a top speed of 194km/h. Paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, the engine delivers maximum torque of 179 NM (13.8 kgf · m) at 4500rpm. The Gamma 1.6T-GDI engine boasts 177PS, a 0-100km/h time of 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 210km/h. The engine delivers maximum torque of 265NM (27kgf · m) from 1,500 to 4,500rpm and is mated to Hyundai’s efficient and responsive seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (7DCT). In addition to the 1.6T-GDI engine, customers in Europe can also opt for Hyundai’s downsized 1.0 T-GDI turbocharged three-cylinder engine with six-speed manual transmission. This turbo-charged powerplant is optimized for efficiency and produces 120PS, a 0-100km/h time of 12 seconds, top speed of 181km/h and maximum torque of 172NM (17.5kgf · m) from 1,500 to 4000 rpm. Also available will be a 1.6 diesel engine for select markets, including Europe. The newly-developed SUV’s chassis is engineered to be rigid, topped with a lightweight body for dynamic driving performance and a comfortable ride. The platform is optimized to permit SUV levels of ground clearance, while the optional 4WD system and drivetrain is intelligently packaged to offer a spacious interior despite its compact proportions. To integrate the optional four-wheel drive system, Hyundai Motor engineers created a new intercooler layout and setting for the transmission to minimize intrusion into the cabin space. The rear layout of the platform is also optimized to save space. The suspension, fuel and exhaust components carefully package to maximize rear occupant room. The front suspension features a McPherson strut system, receiving a new sub-frame bush mounting and best-in-class tire trace to enhance comfort and reduce NVH. The system incorporates SUV geometry for refined body movement on rough roads or harsh off-road terrain. Different rear suspension systems have been developed for both 2WD and 4WD, to deliver a comfortable ride and sporty handling with either drivetrain. At the front, the rear subframe receives new bush structure for the 2WD suspension set-up, with a high-stiffness torsion beam for greater stability and control. The 4WD configuration features a dual-arm multi-link suspension system to refine overall driving dynamics on all surface types. Strong and protective body for passenger safety Hyundai Motor is the only car manufacturer to make its own steel to produce its vehicles globally, providing great benefits for the Kona. The lightweight body frame has been developed with 51.8% Advanced High Strength Steel to deliver class-leading levels of passive safety. Hot stamping methods produce lightweight, super-strong structural elements to maximize the cabin’s central safety zone. This proves that small cars can deliver exceptional passenger protection. The length of structural adhesives used in production extends to 114.5 meters, providing additional torsional rigidity and further reducing weight – which also benefits fuel efficiency. The platform also features an innovative multi-load path structure – an advanced energy dispersion technology that boosts impact tolerance by dispersing crash energy across multiple structures to protect passengers in the event of an accident. Class-leading driver assistance through active safety systems Hyundai Motor sets out to care for its customers in all of its activities. The new model showcases Hyundai Motor’s capabilities and commitment to enhancing the safety of drivers, passengers and fellow road-users. Class-leading active safety features include Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), which uses the car’s front-facing camera and radar to detect imminent collision and avoid impact or minimize damage by braking autonomously. Three further systems also utilize the front-view camera to boost safety and convenience: Lane Keeping Assist (LKA); High Beam Assist (HBA); and Driver Attention Warning (DAW). By sensing road markings, Lane Keep Assist helps to prevent accidental lane departure by steering the car automatically if required. High Beam Assist automatically controls the high beams depending on surroundings, while the Driver Attention Warning system monitors a spectrum of driver-related characteristics to detect driver fatigue or careless driving. The car’s radar systems also assist with the Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW) to detect approaching vehicles that may be obscured from view during high speed driving. The Rear Cross-Traffic Collison Warning (RCCW) detects when another vehicle may have entered the car’s reversing path. Advanced infotainment and connectivity technology The Kona boasts a suite of sophisticated technologies, paired with user-friendly functionality to ensure driver and passengers can stay informed and entertained. The premium infotainment system offers various advanced connectivity features, including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay where specified with a 5-, 7- or 8-inch display (offered as standard or option dependent on market). Further options include DAB digital radio (Europe), HD Radio (North America), rear view camera display, and 4G telematics (North America) to ensure absolute connectivity. A new combiner Head-Up Display (HUD) is fitted to the Kona, projecting a virtual image onto the clear glass panel mounted behind the instrument panel to enable the driver to keep his or her eyes on the road. With a projected image size of eight-inches at a two meter distance and class-leading luminance of more than 10,000 candela per square meter, the Kona’s combiner HUD ensures both excellent day- and night-time visibility. Information projected to enhance safety and usability include speed, navigation instructions, Lane Departure Warning messages, and audio information. Deployed vertically by a simple touch of a button beside the steering wheel, the combiner disappears into the dashboard when not in use. In a first for the segment, the Kona features smartphone wireless charging. Available as an option with all Kona models, customers simply place a compatible smartphone on the wireless charging interface, located in the center console storage, to easily recharge without the need for cables. The system also indicates when the phone has fully charged, reminds occupants to remove their phone when exiting the vehicle, and detects when a foreign object is in the recharging area that could interfere with charging. Enhanced driving dynamics for urban and off-road fun The Kona was developed with a focus on enhanced driving dynamics and responsive performance for city driving. The wide, long wheelbase and short overhangs create a planted stance that results in exceptional agility in busy urban environments and enhanced stability when driving at speed. The three differentiated driving modes (Sports, Normal and Eco) optimize the torque distribution and gear-shift settings to make the compact SUV suitable for all driving style requirements. In Sport mode, there is a greater emphasis on acceleration with early downshift on braking, while Eco mode optimizes fuel economy over performance with longer gear ratios. The Kona name Hyundai Motor continues the approach established by Tucson and Santa Fe of naming crossover and SUV models after acclaimed travel destinations. The Kona is named after the coastal region on the Big Island of Hawaii, USA. The Kona region is famous among thrill-seeking travelers and the island’s energetic image is reflected in the innovative, practical and highly functional design of Hyundai Motor’s new lifestyle-focused SUV. Kona Iron Man Special Edition At the world premiere of the all-new Kona, Hyundai Motor unveiled a special edition that shares the name of the Marvel’s heroic and powerful character – Iron Man. The Kona’s design is inspired by the strong, armored appearance of the Iron Man suit, with its powerful lines echoing the sensual body of the comic and cinematic hero. Again, aligning its characteristics with the technologically advanced Stark Industries armored suit, the Kona Iron Man Special Edition majors on safety and advanced technologies. With greater width (+40mm) the Kona Iron Man Special Edition presents a confident stance while suggesting a voluminous interior. Further visual enhancements set apart the Iron Man edition from the standard Kona. Special LEDs are applied to the headlights, which sit beneath a matt grey hood, embellished with red and gold accents. The Kona Iron Man Special Edition’s dynamic exterior is further complemented by a 19-inch directional wheel badged with an Iron Man Mask in the center as well as off-road tires 716mm in outside diameter. The special edition will go on display at Hyundai Motor’s Motorstudio in Seoul, Korea for a month following its global reveal.

View full article
