The university that first uncovered excess emissions coming out of Volkswagen's diesel models has turned their attention to Fiat Chrysler Automobile's 3.0L EcoDiesel V6. Their results show that models equipped with this engine spew as much as 20 times the legal limit for emissions. Bloomberg reports the West Virginia University’s Center for Alternative Fuels, Engines and Emissions tested five Jeep Grand Cherokees and Ram 1500s from the 2014 and 2015 model years in the lab and out on the road. Why 2014 and 2015 model year vehicles? According to the Wall Street Journal, this is due to another emission issue dealing with 2014 models having their catalytic converter replaced. The university found that in real-world driving, the models emitted between 3 to 20 times the legal limit for Nitrogen oxide (NOx). “We saw emissions results in simulated on-road cycles on chassis dynamometers that were much lower than the actual on-road results were, suggesting that the vehicle was controlled in different fashions,” said Daniel Carder, director of the center to Bloomberg. FCA has called the university’s findings into question. In a statement released yesterday, the company has reached out to the university to get more information on how the tests were done. FCA says the comparison between the on-road tests done by the university and EPA lab tests are invalid. The researchers drove some of the vehicles at a higher speed than in the lab and that there was more weight in the vehicle than what is required by regulators. There is also an interesting tidbit from FCA's statement. "Based upon court filings and discussions with CAFEE, this testing appears to have been commissioned by a plaintiffs’ law firm for purposes of litigation." When asked by Bloomberg on who commissioned the research, Carder declined. Based upon court filings and discussions with CAFEE, this testing appears to have been commissioned by a plaintiffs’ law firm for purposes of litigation. FCA US has asked CAFEE to discuss its testing methodology and share the resulting data for the Company’s understanding, and to determine which on-road test results could conceivably be compared with results from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) laboratory procedures. CAFEE has been unwilling to discuss the report. The CAFEE report implies it would be appropriate to compare its on-road test results with those of one of five required EPA test procedures – each of which is conducted off-road, under laboratory conditions. However, CAFEE’s reported on-road results fail to consider that its tests were conducted: at average speeds more than 50% greater than those in the EPA test procedure with 600-700 lbs. more payload than is used in the EPA test procedure under road conditions (e.g., grades) that are not representative of those in the EPA test procedure Each of the above may increase emissions readings, therefore rendering invalid a comparison of on-road and off-road test results. Further, the aggregation of these variations makes any comparison misleading. Despite the report, there is no regulatory protocol for conducting on-road emissions testing. The report also indicates that the vehicles were modified by CAFEE prior to testing ostensibly in an effort to replicate a prior recall. FCA US has formally filed an application for diesel vehicle emissions certification with the EPA and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for its 2017 model year (MY) Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 diesel vehicles, the latest model year of the same vehicles apparently tested by CAFEE. FCA US has updated the emissions software calibrations in this MY 2017 certification proposal. The updated calibrations are the result of many months of close collaboration between FCA US and EPA and CARB, including extensive testing of the vehicles, to clarify issues related to the Company’s emissions control technology. FCA US continues to discuss improved software calibrations with the agencies. Subject to the permission of EPA and CARB, FCA US intends to install the same modified emissions software in 2014-2016 MY Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 diesel vehicles. The BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo answered a question that no one outside of BMW was asking. It wasn't a pleasing vehicle to look at which affected sales. Still, BMW believes in the Gran Turismo and has decided to make the successor part of the 6-Series family. Thus, the 2018 BMW 6-Series GT. We're still not sold on the whole Gran Turismo idea BMW is trying to put out there, but we have to admit the 6-Series GT is a major improvement in terms of looks. BMW's designers took the design of the 3-Series GT and made it larger to create this model. Compared to the 5-Series GT, the 6-Series GT is about 4-inches longer in overall length and an inch shorter in overall height. The interior is the same as the new 5-Series which isn't a bad thing as it comes with a center stack oriented to the driver, 10.25-inch screen featuring the latest version of BMW's iDrive, and leather upholstery. Rear passengers will enjoy the abundance of rear legroom on offer thanks to the longer length of the vehicle. The U.S. will only get one engine - a 3.0L twin-turbo inline-six producing 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic. BMW quotes a 0-60 mph time of 5.1 seconds - significantly quicker than the 535i's time of 6.1 seconds. Some of this improvement can be directed at BMW dropping around 221 pounds out of the 6-Series GT. The 6-Series GT will also be the first BMW model to introduce Active Driving Assistant - a new name for the brand's suite of active safety features. Lane Departure Warning, alerts the driver if the vehicle is straying out of its lane unintentionally by causing the steering wheel to vibrate. Active Blind Spot Detection monitors maneuvers when changing into a different lane and, if a risk of collision is detected, activates a visual signal in the side-view mirror and vibrates the steering wheel, encouraging the driver to steer the vehicle back into its original lane. Vehicles equipped with the available Active Driving Assistant Plus additionally include Active Lane Keeping Assistant with Side Collision Avoidance and Evasion Aid, which assist the driver with corrective steering. The Side Collision Avoidance system (range approximately 40 – 130 mph) provides corrective steering intervention in situations where a side collision is imminent. When the 2018 Buick Enclave hits dealers later this year, it will cost slightly more than the outgoing model. The redesigned full-size crossover will now begin at $40,970, almost $1,000 more than the current model. But considering how much standard equipment the new model comes with, it seems quite fair. All Enclaves feature keyless entry, hands-free liftgate, three-zone automatic climate control, eight-inch infotainment system with Buick Intellilink, Rear Seat Reminder, and Teen Driver. The Essence comes up next and the option of all-wheel drive. Prices begin at $45,190 for the FWD model and $47,190 for AWD. Premium comes next with prices of $48,990 and $51,290 respectively. Polestar is best known for building fast Volvos, but they could strike out on their own with building performance electric vehicles. Auto Express has learned that Polestar will use Volvo's SPA Scalable Product Architecture) and CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platforms for their new vehicles. The first one, which is expected to be shown sometime this year will use SPA. According to a source, Geely (parent company of Volvo and Polestar) wants to create a line-up of brands that could rival the likes the of Volkswagen Group. Polestar is being positioned as the performance brand and Geely wants them to expand their lineup along the lines of AMG - building bespoke models along with high-performance models. Volvo will hold down the premium segment, while Lynk & Co and Geely will cover the mainstream. This morning in South Korea, Hyundai unveiled the 2018 Kona subcompact crossover. This is a big deal for the Korean automaker as it is the brand's first subcompact crossover. The Kona stands out from Hyundai's other crossovers thanks a polarizing design. Up front, the Kona features Hyundai's new mesh grille that debuted on the 2018 Sonata. The split headlights resemble those found on the Jeep Cherokee. A slim vent above the grille, flared out fenders with cladding, and a two-tone roof finish off the design. “With the Kona, we have created a stylish and highly functional compact SUV, perfectly suited to the needs of customers who pursue challenging, action-filled lifestyles,” said Euisun Chung, Vice Chairman of Hyundai. The Kona's interior isn't as polarizing as the layout is similar to the upcoming Elantra GT/i30 hatchback with a floating screen for the infotainment system. Hyundai is claiming the Kona will have the largest amount of interior space for the class thanks in part to a new architecture it rides on. Various tech features include infotainment systems ranging from 5 to 8-inches, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration; and an optional heads-up display. In terms of power, the U.S. will get the choice of either a 2.0L Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder (147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque) or a turbocharged 1.6L four-cylinder (177 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque). The 2.0 gets a six-speed automatic and the 1.6T comes with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Front-wheel drive comes standard while all-wheel drive is available as an option. Hyundai will also be adding an electric variant that promises a range of 240 miles sometime next year. In terms of safety, the Kona will offer automatic high beams, blind spot monitoring, driver drowsiness monitor, forward collision braking and lane-keep assist.
