We see this customer focus working across the lineup, as our two new SUVs, Atlas and Tiguan, are also tailored for this market and are driving our growth this year.” August 2018 Sales August 18 August 17 Yr/Yr% change August 18 YTD August 17 YTD Yr/Yr% change Golf 567 1,436 -60.5% 5,172 9,873 -47.6% GTI 1,525 2,117 -28.0% 11,873 14,597 -18.7% Golf R 321 100 221.0% 2,893 2,584 12.0% e-Golf 32 317 -89.9% 826 2,512 -67.1% Golf SportWagen 1,148 1,991 -42.3% 10,256 20,225 -49.3% Total Golf Family 3,593 5,961 -39.7% 31,020 49,791 -37.7% Jetta Sedan 10,596 12,409 -14.6% 50,488 78,958 -36.1% Jetta SportWagen (now Golf SportWagen) 1 N/A N/A 70 N/A N/A Total Jetta 10,597 12,409 -14.6% 50,558 78,957 -36.0% Beetle Coupe 631 667 -5.4% 6,777 6,272 8.1% Beetle Convertible 768 557 37.9% 4,374 5,132 -14.8% Total Beetle 1,399 1,224 14.3% 11,151 11,404 -2.2% EOS* N/A N/A N/A N/A 1 N/A Passat 3,873 5,714 -32.2% 30,232 45,994 -34.3% CC 62 97 -36.1% 388 1,111 -65.1% Tiguan Limited 1,276 1,005 27.0% 11,890 19,454 -38.9% 2018 Tiguan 7,281 2,516 189.4% 60,019 3,109 1,830.5% Touareg 120 282 -57.4% 1,704 2,387 -28.6% Atlas 4,054 2,807 44.4% 38,711 8,136 375.8% TOTAL 32,255 32,015 0.7% 235,673 220,344 7% *Eos production ended in July 2015

American Honda Reports August Sales Increase as Trucks Smash Previous Records Sep 4, 2018 Three-peat for the 2019 Acura RDX – 5,793 units sold in August yield third-consecutive monthly sales record Honda Pilot sales continue to skyrocket in August with 60% gain – heading to all-time annual record Honda’s electrified vehicles score all-time best sales month with 5,884 units sold Acura sales jump 14.8% in August, as light truck sales surge to record heights "Leveraging our manufacturing flexibility to increase our light truck supply continues to pay off for us," said Henio Arcangeli Jr., senior vice president of the American Honda Automobile Division. "The Acura RDX and MDX combined forces to deliver the best August of all time for Acura light trucks. RDX also continued its strong sales pace, achieving a third consecutive month of record sales since hitting the market in June." "For Honda, Pilot benefited from increased light truck production and recorded a 60 percent increase in year-over-year sales," added Arcangeli. Honda Brand Report While supply constraints on select models restrained passenger car sales, Honda’s light truck portfolio lead the charge by way of the refreshed 2019 Pilot, segment-leading Odyssey minivan and always hot-selling CR-V. Riding a wave of rapidly growing popularity, Pilot sales jumped 60% on 15,332 units – up 41.3 percent for the year toward an all-time record. CR-V delivered again in August with sales of 34,610 units, an increase of 11.8%, on track to set a new annual sales mark. Electrified vehicles sales topped 5,000 units for the 2nd straight month, with Accord Hybrid, Insight, and Clarity Plug-in Hybrid setting a best-ever month. The #1 retail-selling minivan, Odyssey gained 13.5% on sales of 9,887 units. Acura Brand Report Acura brand sales gained sharply in August, up 14.8% as light trucks set an all-time sales mark for August. It’s three in a row for RDX, with sales totaling 5,793 for the month — a new August record. Fresh off an update for the 2019 model year, including the addition of a new A-Spec package, MDX jumped 38% on sales of 6,252 units.

Ford had planned on selling two cars by 2019 in the U.S. - the Mustang and Focus Active. The latter took elements of a crossover with a higher ride height, body cladding, and new bumpers, and put them onto a Focus hatchback. But plans to bring this model to the U.S. have been canned. Ford announced today that it has canceled the Focus Active as tariffs on Chinese-made goods would eat into profits. The company announced last year that it would import the next-generation Focus from China. "Given the negative financial impact of the new tariffs, we've decided not to import this vehicle from China. The significant thing that moved was the tariffs going up substantially higher. We're choosing to deploy resources elsewhere," said Kumar Galhotra, Ford president of North America. Unlike General Motors which had applied for an exemption on the Chinese-built Buick Envision, Ford did not apply for one as it would have not worked out due to production timing and a small number of sales - the company projected to sell fewer than 50,000 Focus Actives in the U.S. Kristin Dziczek, vice president of the Center for Automotive Research tells The Detroit News that this could be the first of many announcements. The combination of Chinese tariffs, along with the threat of a 25 percent tariff on imported cars and parts may push a lot of products out of the U.S. “Many models will be withdrawn from the U.S. market, and many won’t be built in the U.S. at all. There are a whole lot of implications for the automotive industry and for consumers in terms of choice and prices,” she explained. The decision also puts Ford in a tough spot. The Focus Active was going to be one of the models that would fill in the space left by sedans that are going to be cut. "It didn't make sense for us to continue to invest in this program. We're looking at the entire landscape, and we're thinking through what other products we can offer customers," said Galhotra. Source: Automotive News (Subscription Required), The Detroit News

For 2019, Volkswagen is swapping engines on certain Golf models to help boost fuel economy. The Car Connection reports that the Golf and Golf SportWagen will swap the turbocharged 1.8L four for the Jetta's turbo 1.4. The smaller engine produces 147 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Volkswagen is also adding more gears to the transmissions - six-speeds for the manual and eight for the automatic. EPA fuel economy estimates are not available at the moment. All-wheel drive variants (Golf SportWagen S AWD and Alltrack) will keep the turbo 1.8. Its unclear from TCC's story whether it will get the updated transmissions - Alltrack already gets the six-speed manual. There's also some feature changes for the 2019 Golf, Golf: Base S models add automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring as standard. SE models will now come equipped with adaptive cruise control, active lane control, and automatic high-beam headlights. Golf SportWagen: Mirrors the Golf, along with the top-line SEL model being dropped. Golf Alltrack: S models get automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring. SE adds LED headlights as an option. SEL models get a six-speed manual as an option. Source: The Car Connection View full article

Many automotive journalists have been flummoxed by the popularity of the Toyota Camry. The model trails the pack in a number of key areas such as design, handling, and performance. But I know the reason why the Camry is beloved by many; it is a no hassle midsize sedan that will go the distance. But there is a change that endangers many midsize sedans. Buyers who previously brought sedans are now trending towards crossovers and SUVs as they offer a number of traits such as a higher ride height and a large area for people and stuff. Automakers find themselves in a difficult spot as to whether they should drop their sedans to focus on utility vehicles, or put more effort into making them more appealing. Toyota has chosen the latter option with the 2018 Camry. Let’s see if they made the right call. Previous Camrys have tended to play it safe with their exterior designs. The new model drops the safe attitude and goes for something very extroverted. For the XSE, this includes a different front end with a smaller lower grille and large cutouts in the bumper. The side profile shows off a pronounced character line and a set of 19-inch machined-finish alloy wheels. Move the back to find a faux diffuser and a set of quad tailpipes. I actually prefer the look of the XSE to the other Camry models as it loses out on the gaping maw that is the lower grille. Compared to the jumbled-together look of the previous Camry’s interior, the new model features a flowing and modern design. The unique shape of the center stack and contrasting trim pieces for the passenger really help the model stand out. Controls are laid out in a very logical fashion and have easy-to-read text. Material quality is very impressive with exposed stitching, metal trim, and a lot of soft-touch plastic. The XSE features leather seats with eight-way power adjustments for driver and passenger. I found the seats to be on the firm side and provide decent support on short trips. But on longer trips, my lower back started to ache. I couldn’t tell if I design of the seat just didn’t work with my back or if I had too much lumbar. On paper, the Camry has the smallest amount of rear legroom. But in reality, I found that I had more than enough to feel comfortable. Taller passengers will need to duck as headroom is quite tight due to the optional sunroof. Toyota has installed the latest version of their Entune infotainment system in the 2018 Camry. The new version comes with an updated look that retains the ease of use that we have liked on the older systems. Performance is about average for the class as it takes only a few milliseconds to get to the various functions. I do like the array of physical buttons that provide an easy way to move around the system. There is still no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. But considering the 2019 Avalon does have Apple CarPlay, we hope the Camry will get it as well. XSE models get a heads-up display as standard. However, I found the display to be more of a hindrance as the image was blurry. I think this is a problem with Toyota as I experienced the same issue in the LC 500 coupe I drove late last year. For its polarizing character, you might be expecting the Camry XSE to have either a turbo-four or V6 under the hood. While a 3.5L V6 is available, this XSE featured the standard 2.5L four-cylinder engine producing 206 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. It was a bit disappointing to find this engine under the hood considering the vehicle’s character. Around town, the Camry doesn’t feel as fast as the Hyundai Sonata due to most of the power being available only at higher rpms. On the highway or needing to make a pass, the four-cylinder comes alive with enough shove to get you moving at a decent clip. Disappointingly, Toyota forgot to quiet down the engine during acceleration as there is a fair amount of buzz coming inside the cabin. But the engine quiets down to a murmur when cruising. The new eight-speed transmission pairs well with the engine, delivering unobtrusive and quick shifts. Fuel economy figures for the 2.5 are 28 City/39 Highway/32 Combined. My average for the week landed around 32.6 mpg in mixed driving. The Camry is the latest Toyota model to move on to the TGNA modular platform and it makes the model somewhat fun to pilot. On a curvy stretch of road, the XSE feels well-mannered as there isn’t excessive body motion and the steering proving a direct and well-weighted feel. Despite its sporting nature, the XSE’s ride is well-controlled with only a few bumps making their way inside. One disappointment is the large amount road and wind noise that comes inside when driving on the freeway. The Camry XSE sits as the flagship trim with a starting price of $29,150 for the four-cylinder and $35,100 for the V6. With a number of options, the as-tested price of this XSE comes to $35,333. That is quite the poor value considering for a few hundred dollars more, you can get into a loaded an Accord Touring complete with a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder producing 252 horsepower. For a couple thousand dollars less, the Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.0T and Kia Optima SX offer similar driving dynamics and more luxury touches. Toyota knew it had to take a big gamble with the new Camry considering the growing demand for crossovers. In certain respects, Toyota has done it. The Camry is not a wallflower in terms of its looks and handling. Additionally, the interior blends a distinctive design with ease of use. But there are some problems that put the Camry in a tough spot. The four-cylinder engine needs a bit more low-end punch for around-town driving. Some more sound deadening would go a long way in making the Camry a good long-distance cruiser. The biggest issue is the value argument as other sedans offer much more equipment for similar or less money than the Camry. Toyota is likely banking on the name equity of model to justify the higher price. This would be ok if we weren’t in a time where more and more buyers are moving to crossovers and utility vehicles. The 2018 Toyota Camry is a much better car from the one it replaces, but the high price tag may be its downfall.
