  2. Yeah... Does GM really need another platform right now? Down the line, sure I can understand. Give Cadillac it's own platform to help differentiate itself from the other brands. But now?
  3. The Never Ending Story: More Rumors With The Cadillac Flagships William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 26, 2011 Cadillac has been dreaming about building a flagship sedan for the longest time, going as far to build the Sixteen concept in 2003. Rumors since then about the flagship Cadillac have only grown ranging from a production version of the Sixteen to a S-Class/7-Series/A8 fighter. Now, Car & Driver sheds some light on some new rumors on two flagships from the crest and wreath. Rumor #1 deals with the S-Class/7-Series/A8 fighter. Previously, the rumors said the vehicle would be using an extended version of the Alpha RWD platform that would underpin the ATS and next-generation CTS. Now, insiders tell C&D that the flagship will ride on a brand new platform called Omega and will come with a range of V6, V8, hybrid, and diesel powertrains going through either RWD or AWD. As for technology and other bits, that still remains in the dark. Rumor #2 deals with a vehicle going after the Rolls-Royce Phantom. The Phantom competitor will utilize the Omega platform. The chances of this vehicle seeing the light of day are slim to none. Source: Car & Driver
  4. GM Won't Bump Up Release Of Next Generation Pickups William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 26, 2011 The pain at the pump is increasing and automakers have been accelerating development and release of new fuel-efficient vehicles. The most current automaker to make news is GM with the announcement of the 2013 Malibu beginning production next January, a jump of four months. Now, questions are being asked if other GM vehicles in the pipeline, like the next generation Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra Pickups will be accelerated. At the New York Auto Show last week, GM CEO Dan Akerson was asked about this and said, "Trucks would not be a program that we’d move up in a mileage-sensitive market." This answer makes some sense. When GM declared bankruptcy in 2009, they revised their launch schedule for the pickups. Also, GM has so many engineers they can put on programs to help move them along. But the question remains, Why not GM? The next generation pickups from GM are rumored to have new V6, V8, and hybrid powertrains which will be more powerful and efficient. Also, the trucks are losing some weight which will help with the fuel economy. Source: Automotive News (Subscription Required), Pickuptrucks.com

  9. Volvo Denies Rumors Of Buying Saab William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 22, 2011 Volvo is denying a report from Dutch newspaper, De Telegraaf about buying Saab. De Telegraff said in an article that the Swedish Goverment was in talks with Chinese owned Volvo about possibly putting in a bid to buy Saab. The move would give the Swedish government greater assurance that a loan from the European Investment Bank would be granted for Saab and a guarantee from Sweden that the loan would be paid back. Volvo Cars spokesman Per-Ake Froberg said about the report, "No such talks have been going on and no such talks are scheduled." Saab has been hurting for money since being bought by Spyker last year. Production was stopped a few weeks ago due to suppliers not being paid. Since then, the Swedish government has approved a financing deal for the automaker which needs to be approved by European Investment Bank. Source: Automotive News (Subscription Required)
  10. Chrysler Cans B & C-Segments Vehicles William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 21, 2011 Back in 2009, Sergio Marchionne presented a eight-hour powerpoint presentation detailing the next five years of products for Chrysler. On one of those slides, Chrysler had a B-Segment vehicle due out in 2013 and a C-Segment car due out in 2012. However those two vehicles looked they have been shelved. Olivier Francois, Chrysler president speaking with Car & Driver at New York Auto Show said the B-Segment Chrysler car is dead. The plan was to do a rebadge job with a Lancia Ypsilon. However, the Ypsilon is related closely with the Fiat 500 and would be too similar to sell in the US market according to Francois. The C-Segment Chrysler car which would have competed with the Ford Focus and Chevrolet Cruze has been put on indefinite leave. Francois said either Chrysler or Dodge would have ended up with the vehicle and Dodge got it. Dodge president, Ralph Gilles said Dodge would be getting a new vehicle to replace the Caliber and it will be “very competitive”. Source: Car & Driver
  11. Kia Shows Off The Rio Sedan, No Hamsters Involved 2012 Kia Rio Sedan Gallery Sub-Compact Sedan and Hatchback Sibling Offer Best-In-Class Horsepower and Achieve Up to 40 Miles Per Gallon Rio models bring Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) and Idle Stop and Go (ISG) technology to small car segment 2012 Rio offers outstanding combination of styling, fuel economy and power rarely seen in the class NEW YORK, April 21, 2011 - Kia Motors America (KMA) today globally unveiled the all-new 2012 Rio sub-compact sedan at the New York International Auto Show. Scheduled to join the KMA lineup this fall – along with its hatchback sibling unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show and shown today for the first time in North America – the all-new Rio ushers in the next chapter of Kia Motors' ongoing design-led transformation with previously unseen levels of eye-catching design, advanced technologies and sophistication in the small car segment. With all-new ISG technology and class-leading horsepower and fuel economy of 40 miles per gallon, Rio promises consumers impressive fuel efficiency without sacrificing power or fun-to-drive performance. "The all-new Rio brings Kia's successful combination of world-class styling, outstanding fuel economy, advanced technologies and tremendous value to the smallest and most economical vehicle in the Kia lineup," said Michael Sprague, vice president, marketing & communications, KMA. "With gas prices rising, sub-compacts are becoming increasingly more popular and with more power, up to 40 miles per gallon fuel economy and stunning design, the all-new Rio sets the standard in the sub-compact class and becomes a vehicle that is not only affordable, but one that people will aspire to own." Class-Leading Fuel-Efficiency and Horsepower Available in three trims – LX, EX and SX – the 2012 Rio is available with a 1.6-liter GDI four-cylinder with the option of either a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic. One of only two vehicles in the segment to offer a GDI engine, the 2012 Rio offers consumers an elusive combination of power and impressive fuel efficiency, achieving class-leading 138 horsepower while also maintaining a class-leading fuel economy rating of 30/40 mpg (city/highway). Rio also offers ISG technology, new to the Kia lineup, where the engine turns off when the vehicle is not in motion such as at a stop light or in traffic. The engine restarts automatically when the driver releases the brake pedal, resulting in lower levels of fuel consumption. Adding further to Rio's improved performance, engineers worked to reduce engine weight by 29 pounds over the previous generation by adding an aluminum valve cover and block to the third-generation Gamma engine, while incorporating cast iron lining for increased durability. Sleek and Streamlined Exterior Conceived at Kia's design studios in Irvine, Calif., the all-new Rio sub-compact sedan and hatchback exhibit highly sculpted sloping shoulder lines and wedge-shaped exteriors, projecting an athletic profile that conveys power and agility while mimicking the aggressive lines found on other recently launched Kia vehicles such as the 2011 Optima and Sportage. Both Rio models sport their own interpretations of Kia's signature grille, slimmed down to connect to the dynamic headlamp design, providing a new twist on the Kia family look that includes a bigger air intake to exude a youthful persona. The Rio sedan shares the sleek skin of its hatchback sibling, only dropping the wedge line slightly toward the rear door down to the trunk. The LX trim includes body-color door handles and side mirrors and 15-inch steel wheels with 185/65R15 tires, while the Rio5 also comes with a standard rear spoiler to improve aerodynamics. To accentuate a premium look, the side mirrors are attached to the door rather than the plastic triangle like so many others in the segment. Moving to the EX trim brings additional standard conveniences, including power door locks with keyless entry and a standard rear wiper for the Rio5. For consumers looking for higher levels of sporty refinement, the SX trim offers standard 17-inch wheels with 205/45R17 tires, fog lamps, LED daytime running and rear combinations lamps, dual chrome tip exhaust, outside heated mirrors with turn signal indicators and, unique for the Rio5, projector headlamps. Luxuriously Equipped Interior Moving inside, the 2012 Rio envelopes driver and passengers in a bold and modern cabin, centered on Kia's characteristic horizontal three-cylinder instrument panel, two-tone for the 2012 Rio to emphasize a feeling of spaciousness and comfort. An extended wheelbase (101.2 inches) greatly enhances passenger and cargo capacity for additional comfort, offering 40 inches front headroom, 37.8 inches rear headroom, 43.3 inches front legroom and 31.1 inches rear legroom for the Rio sedan and Rio5 hatchback. Standard on the LX trim is a driver's seat height adjuster, while moving to the EX trim includes standard power windows with automatic up/down on the driver's window, Bluetooth® wireless technology connectivity with steering wheel-mounted voice activation controls to enable hands-free operation for compatible mobile phones, telescoping steering column, 60/40 split folding rear seats and leatherette door trim. The SX trim offers consumers an even more upscale look and feel with standard metal pedals, metal grain, a Supervision™ meter cluster, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, maplight with sunglasses holder, illuminated vanity mirrors, trip computer, cruise control, UVO powered by Microsoft® in-car hands-free communication and entertainment system with rear camera display, and chrome-coated accents throughout. In addition to offering a comfortable cabin, impressive technology features also come standard throughout, including an AM/FM/CD/MP3/Sat audio system with SIRIUS® Satellite Radio capabilities and three months complimentary service and auxiliary and USB audio input jacks for connecting with MP3 players. Available packaging upgrades for the Rio EX include a Convenience Package and Eco Package, while the SX level offers an available Premium Package. The Convenience Package includes 15-inch alloy wheels, automatic light control, fog lamps, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, maplight with sunglasses holder, illuminated vanity mirrors, outside heated mirrors with turn signal indicators, trip computer, cruise control and the UVO powered by Microsoft® in-car hands-free communication and entertainment system with rear camera display. The Eco Package appeals to the environmentally friendly consumer with ISG technology and an Active Eco System for optimal fuel-efficient driving. Upgrading the SX trim with the luxurious Premium Package includes a navigation system (replaces the UVO system), push-button start with Smart Key, leather seat trim, heated front seats and a moonroof to give an open, airy feeling. All-New Advanced Platform The 2012 Rio brings with it an all-new platform – longer, wider and lower than the previous generation. Its aggressive and playful stance is assisted through an overall length of 171.9 (Rio sedan) or 159.3 (Rio5) with a platform measuring 67.7 inches wide and 57.3 inches high. Employing high-tensile-strength steel (63 percent), Rio's lightweight design offers high torsional stiffness for improved handling, ride quality and refinement. Though a more expensive alternative, using these materials also increases crash safety capabilities while reducing overall weight. To ensure good noise vibration and harshness (NVH) reduction, the 2012 Rio was outfitted with hood and dash insulators as well as expandable foam in the A and C pillars and Thinsulate™ in the A and B pillars. Built on a unibody frame, the front-wheel-drive Rio utilizes independent front and rear suspension systems. MacPherson struts, coil springs and a stabilizer bar are used in the front with a torsion beam axle suspension in the rear to engage drivers with responsive handling and provide the utmost comfort for a variety of driving situations. Safety-Minded The 2012 Rio is equipped with a high level of standard safety features, as is the rest of the Kia line-up. Rio's high-strength steel structure includes an innovative Halo Body construction designed to help protect occupants in certain side impact and roll-over collisions, while additional standard safety features include six airbags (dual advanced front and front-seat mounted side as well as full-length side curtain), side-impact door beams, height-adjustable front seatbelts with pre-tensioners and force limiters, three-point seatbelts for all seating positions and Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH). Also standard on all Rio trims for increased driver and passenger safety are Electronic Stability Control (ESC), a four-wheel Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), which coordinates the car's ESC and ABS to help the driver stay in control of the vehicle. Competitive Warranty The 2012 Rio is covered by Kia's warranty program, which offers unprecedented consumer protection. Included in this program are a 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, a five-year/60,000-mile limited basic warranty and a five-year/100,000-mile anti-perforation warranty. A five-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance plan also is part of the vehicle coverage.
  12. Fiat Takes It All Off For The 500c 2012 Fiat 500c Gallery FIAT Brand North America reveals new 2012 Fiat 500 Cabrio at the New York International Auto Show Italian by design: beautiful craftsmanship, confident handling and city-friendly proportions combined with a clever open-top design provides Fiat 500c passengers with quietest interior sound quality, most interior space, rear-seat legroom and shoulder room among key competitors New 1.4-liter engine with state-of-the-art MultiAir® technology, invented and patented by Fiat Group, delivers power, fuel efficiency and refinement Two models, 14 exterior colors, 12 unique seat color and material combinations, plus a choice of two interior environments and three exterior soft-top colors allow customers to personalize “their own” Fiat 500c at www.fiatusa.com The new 2012 Fiat 500c arrives in U.S. FIAT Studios beginning in late spring 2011 with a starting U.S. Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $19,500 The Fiat 500c Pop model is the only four-seat cabrio in the market priced below $20,000 April 21, 2011 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Expanding on the iconic qualities that have made the original Fiat 500 (Cinquecento) a timeless icon, the new 2012 Fiat 500 Cabrio combines open-air freedom and driving enjoyment with beautiful Italian styling, timeless functionality, efficient design and innovative technology for an entirely new generation of drivers. “Perfectly timed with the warm weather and excitement of spring, the new 2012 Fiat 500 Cabrio expands our product lineup while paying homage to the brand’s rich heritage of open-air cabrios that deliver style, value and driving enjoyment,” said Laura Soave, Head of FIAT Brand North America. “The new Fiat 500c has been intelligently tailored for our market – now with an added dose of sunshine and panoramic views at the push of a button.” More than 50 years of FIAT brand’s successful small-car formula The Nuova Cinquecento debuted in the summer of 1957 as a cabrio and offered a distinctive canvas roof that opened right to the rear of the vehicle. More than 50 years later, the new 2012 Fiat 500c showcases the brand’s ingenuity to build world-class small cars that ignite a spirit of the times through simple design, beautiful craftsmanship and timeless value. As a result, the Fiat 500 models have continued to surprise and delight customers worldwide. The new Fiat 500c builds on the Italian styling, all-season performance, fuel-efficient powertrain options, interior comfort for four passengers and more than 35 safety and security features that have made the Fiat 500 hatchback model an international success. Cleverly designed with a multi-position power-retractable cloth top, fully stamped body-side silhouette and 70 percent less header shake then key competitors – the new Fiat 500c delivers leading interior sound quality (quietest at 45 mph, 70 mph and lowest powertrain noise). In addition, its longer windshield and minimized header design maximize rear-seated passengers’ outward visibility, while minimizing cabin turbulence. And for easy access to the cabrio’s trunk, premium “parallelogram” liftgate hinges conveniently position the liftgate out of the way, while the power-operated cloth top simultaneously retracts. Metro-friendly proportions, now with an even greater panoramic view The new 2012 Fiat 500c combines city-friendly proportions, iconic Cinquecento cues and a fully power-operated cloth top — all wrapped in modern Italian styling that conveys simplicity and joy. At the front, the new Fiat 500c model’s signature “whiskers and logo” face features circular projector headlamps and lower park lamps that resemble the latest Fiat models while paying homage to the distinctive elements of the original Cinquecento in stylistic harmony. To show its road-holding stance, the cabrio’s front fascia features chromed trim and tapers outward toward its large wheel arches, while a horizontal cooling duct adds design character and additional engine cooling. Differentiating the Fiat 500c from the hatchback model is a slightly longer windshield that is designed to provide passengers with a maximized outward view. In addition, the windshield elegantly conceals the reinforced upper-cross member that ensures the cabrio’s rigid body structure during spirited driving. From the side, the Fiat 500c’s pillars stand out and present strong arches, while the shape of the soft top provides a more slender silhouette compared with the hatchback version. Below, the black or available chromed belt molding, the signature body-side A-line slopes forward for a dynamic look, while its lateral section features clean surfaces and flared wheel arches to deliver a modern interpretation of the historic Cinquecento. To keep its design simple and modern, the hood-to-fender seam is elegantly cut at the A-line. Filling the wheel wells are four unique wheel designs, all with the “500” logo on the center caps. For more design character, bi-halogen projector headlamps and clear-lens taillamps are visible from the side profile thanks to the way the cabrio’s rounded sides link up to the front and rear. Providing enhanced durability, new lower-sill spats protect the body-side from stone chips. At the rear of the new Fiat 500c, a roof-mounted and color-matched spoiler improves aerodynamics, while elegantly integrating the center high-mounted stop lamp that cleverly functions with the roof up or down. Separating the premium cloth top from the liftgate is a chrome trim accent that also highlights the cabrio’s width. To keep the rear design clean, the lighting functions are divided vertically following the liftgate’s cutline. Finishing off the iconic styling of the Fiat 500c is a chromed license plate brow, a motif from the original Cinquecento that was inspired by a bicycle saddle. Intelligent power-cloth top stylistically reinterprets the past As a contemporary solution to the famous canvas roof on the original Cinquecento, the new 2012 Fiat 500c features a premium dual-layer power-operated cloth top that is designed to deliver all-season driving pleasure with the top up or down. Directly inspired from the historic Cinquecento, the Fiat 500c features a wide glass backlight to retain the same visibility as the hatchback, while its rounded corners are a direct inspiration from the historic model. With just the push of a button, the Fiat 500c’s power-operated cloth top retracts up to the rear spoiler during speeds up to 60 mph (a midway point can be chosen by pressing the button anytime between). Press the roof button again, and the roof will neatly fold all the way open and tuck neatly behind the rear head restraints (up to 50 mph). The power-cloth top is also intelligent. When the liftgate is opened for trunk access, the power-operated cloth top automatically retracts back to the rear-spoiler position to avoid any obstruction. Modern elegance inspired by timeless design features Even with the top up, the interior of the new 2012 Fiat 500c is airy and roomy, and an environment designed to be comfortable and enjoyable for any destination. The interior design theme of the new Fiat 500c is an artistic blend of clean lines and conveniently located features inspired by the historic model. Through the available leather-wrapped steering wheel, the cabrio’s single concentric instrument cluster features the speedometer, tachometer and trip computer in a distinct and effective manner. Integrating the latest in portable vehicle navigation for improved route guidance, the instrument cluster features a central LCD monitor that shows pictograms from the TomTom® navigation with BLUE&ME™ Handsfree Communication. These elements, together with a highly integrated center stack and a uniquely designed radio and climate control system, can be ordered in Ivory or Black for an extra level of personalization while also influencing the interior theme to be more sporty or vintage. The instrument panel of the new Fiat 500c continues the perfect blend of modern simplicity with iconic Italian styling. The upper instrument panel is designed to convey a sense of refinement and elegance and features color-matched exterior accents for added detail. Frequently used vehicle buttons are highlighted with chromed circular rings and are centrally located on the exterior-matched instrument panel trim for a premium appearance. The lower instrument panel and center console highlight the new cabrio’s space utilization with large- and small-sized storage spaces to keep mobile devices at a convenient reach. A new passenger glove box stores valuable items, while concealing the BLUE&ME Handsfree Communication system’s USB port for instant integration of mobile devices including an iPod. For an integrated look, the new automatic- or manual-transmission shifter and bezel are ergonomically located into the lower instrument panel and feature a mechanically styled shift knob accented in black or leather depending on the model. The new Fiat 500c’s interior features highly detailed driver and passenger seats available in 12 color and material combinations for maximum personality with an added touch of personalization. Inspired by the historic Cinquecento of the 1960s, the new seats offer the same unique split-color effect: monotone fabric at the bottom and the upper seatback, while the head restraint is matched to the Ivory or Black interior environment. On the Fiat 500c Lounge model, uniquely designed cloth seats provide an upscale look and feel, while premium leather seats are available in traditional Nero (black), a Marrone (brown) hide or ultra-sporty Rosso (red) and deliver a sophisticated look. Continuing the clean interior design theme, the door panels of the new Fiat 500c feature a contrast between the upper trim upholstered to match the seats, while the surrounding area elegantly incorporates large map pockets and a specially designed space- and weight-saving BOSE® Energy Efficient Series premium audio system. Paying homage to the past, the chromed “hook” door-handle shape recalls one of the most remembered features on the original model while integrating modern-day power door locks. A small cabrio that lives big Thanks to careful analysis of the interior cabin, the new 2012 Fiat 500c features the most interior space (76.2 cubic feet) among key competitors, while numerous built-in storage locations quickly and conveniently store mobile devices and travel gear. Even the Fiat 500c’s rear seats deliver the most rear-seat legroom and shoulder room among key competitors, providing comfort for two adults, while delivering the same high-quality comfort and craftsmanship as the driver and front-passenger seats. To highlight the fact that the cabrio is roomy, the rear passengers’ raised and bolstered seat backs are identical to the hatchback model, while even more headroom is present with the dual-layer roof up. In addition, the luggage compartment is spacious, accommodating 5.4 cubic feet of gear with the seats up and a maximum of 23.4 cubic feet of gear with the 50/50 split-fold rear seats folded down. To more easily load all of the gear, designers maximized the liftgate width and kept the trunk lift-over height low. Fiat 500c embodies a new vision of technology’s role in the achievement of sustainable mobility Adapted for U.S. customers, the new 2012 Fiat 500c features an all-new 1.4-liter 16-valve engine with state-of-the-art MultiAir® fuel-saving and emissions-reducing technology – the quietest powertrain versus its competitors. Invented and patented by Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT), MultiAir provides world-class levels of power, best-in-class 30 mpg city (manual transmission) fuel efficiency, quality and refinement. Delivering spirited driving and well-suited for the Fiat 500c’s lightweight design and city-friendly size, the efficient and responsive 1.4-liter MultiAir in-line four-cylinder engine provides 101 horsepower (75 kW) at 6,500 rpm and 98 lb.-ft. (133 N•m) of torque at 4,000 rpm. When paired with the five-speed manual transmission, the Fiat 500 delivers up to 38 highway mpg. Helping to achieve 10 percent greater fuel efficiency and power while decreasing CO2 emissions up to 10 percent compared to engines without the system, the new Fiat 500c features the world’s first Fully Variable Valve Actuation (FVVA) system on a production engine. Also known as MultiAir, this innovative intake-valve system replaces a traditional overhead cam with hydraulic actuation controlled by four, fast-responding, electronic solenoids – delivering instantaneous air-fuel adjustment at any time in the engine cycle for maximum efficiency and power. eco:Drive™ Application helps to improve driving efficiency The new 2012 Fiat 500c with state-of-the-art eco:Drive™ Application demonstrates that an automaker’s environmental responsibility should not stop when the car leaves the production line but rather extend into the actual way customers drive their cars. Fiat’s eco:Drive Application collects all necessary data relating to vehicle efficiency and, through the BLUE&ME™ USB port, transmits it on to any USB memory stick. Once the driver plugs the memory stick into his or her personal computer, the system presents the driver with the Fiat 500c’s detailed environmental performance, including the CO2 emission level for each trip. In addition, FIAT’s eco:Drive Application analyzes the driver’s style and provides recommendations on how to modify his or her driving style to help reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Originated in Europe, Fiat’s eco:Drive Application has encouraged drivers to set challenges – CO2 reduction targets for specific journeys or over a set period of time. And as part of a global “eco:Ville” community, the system encourages all drivers to come together and pool their fuel and emissions savings to illustrate how many drivers’ individual contributions help the greater good. All-new six-speed automatic delivers added performance and fuel efficiency The new 2012 Fiat 500c offers two reliable, robust and sophisticated transmissions uniquely designed for improved efficiency and driving fun. An all-new six-speed automatic transmission with driver-selectable gear changes provides the new Fiat 500c with smooth shifting and excellent fuel economy. For more engaging driving, the driver can select the “Sport” mode. Should the driver select ‘Sport’ mode on the instrument panel, the all-new six-speed automatic transmission provides greater driving enjoyment. Through advanced powertrain management, ‘Sport’ mode enables quicker gear changes, a unique throttle map for improved engine responsiveness and allows each gear to be held for longer periods near the redline. An upgraded five-speed manual transmission features new gear ratios for the U.S. market, allowing the new Fiat 500c to deliver improved fuel efficiency and quicker off-the-line acceleration. For improved durability and pedal feel, a new self-adjusting hydraulic-clutch system is standard on the manual-transmission-equipped Fiat 500c. Two new well-equipped Fiat 500c models The new 2012 Fiat 500c offers two exciting models infused with style, technology and convenience features to make life under the open sky more personalized and fun. 15. Subaru Shows Off The Lighter And More Fuel Efficient Impreza 2012 Subaru Impreza Gallery 30-Percent Boost In Fuel Economy Makes 2012 Impreza the Most Fuel Efficient All-Wheel Drive Car in America. Roomiest Impreza Ever With New Level of Comfort and Refinement Same exterior dimensions, but lighter and quicker than previous model NEW YORK, April 20, 2011 - Subaru of America, Inc., today introduced the all-new fourth-generation 2012 Impreza® four-door and five-door compact models at the 2011 New York International Auto Show. Debuting bolder, more dynamic designs and an all-new powertrain, the 2012 Impreza models offer a 30-percent improvement in fuel economy over the outgoing versions, along with increased room, greater agility and a higher level of refinement. New amenities, infotainment technology and higher-grade interior materials contribute to a more rewarding driving and ownership experience in the 2012 Impreza, which will arrive in Subaru dealerships this fall. Powered by an all-new 148-hp 2.0-liter Boxer engine, the 2012 Impreza comes with a choice of a five-speed manual transmission or the second-generation Lineartronic® CVT (continuously variable transmission). The 2012 Impreza will offer the highest fuel economy of any all-wheel drive car in America, with projected EPA ratings of 27 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. Every 2012 Impreza is equipped as standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. Offered in base, Premium, Sport Premium, Limited and Sport Limited models, the 2012 Impreza conveys a bolder, more confident design that emphasizes its sporty roots and standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive performance. In profile, the 2012 Impreza draws focus to its wheels with powerful arches, a theme that debuted on the 2010 Subaru Legacy®. The combination of a longer wheelbase and redesigned door and roof trim and front seats yields gains in passenger and cargo room for the 2011 Impreza. The wheelbase grows to 104.1 inches compared to 103.2 in the outgoing model. Vehicle length and width remain the same as before for both sedan and five-door models, yet, thanks to redesigned door panels, the 2012 Impreza offers increased hip and shoulder room. Rear seat passengers gain nearly two inches of legroom. Sedan trunk room and five-door cargo room are both increased, and the five-door now provides a completely flat load floor with the standard 60/40 split rear seatbacks folded. The windshield is more raked than in the previous Impreza, with the bottom of the A-pillar moved 7.9 inches forward, allowing for a front door opening nearly five inches longer for easier entry/exit. Higher hip points and a lower, flatter instrument panel, along with larger side mirrors, contribute to better visibility from within the cabin. Richer looking appointments and details abound, including soft-touch materials for the dashboard, door trim and center console armrest. Larger door pockets can hold plastic drink bottles and large maps. Numerous compartments located in and around the center console hold all manner of today’s personal items, such as phones, USB drives and MP3 players. The new 2.0-liter Boxer engine feels even more responsive than the 2.5-liter engine it replaces, thanks to lighter vehicle weight – and especially when equipped with the new CVT, a quieter and more compact version of the CVT that debuted in the 2010 Legacy and Outback® models. Unlike a conventional automatic transmission, which uses fixed gear ratios, a CVT provides infinite variability between the highest and lowest available ratios with no discernable steps or shifts. The CVT continuously and smoothly adapts to performance demand, helping to keep the engine in its most efficient operating range. Impreza Premium, Sport and Limited models with the CVT also feature a 6-speed manual mode with steering wheel paddle shifters, which allow the driver to control the transmission via six pre-set ratios. Other technologies helping boost fuel efficiency in the 2011 Subaru Impreza include the new electric power steering system, which by itself contributes a 2-percent efficiency increase, and lower rolling resistance tires. Strengthened suspension components in front and rear -- some inherited from the Legacy -- enhance agility, while new liquid (hydraulic) engine mounts help to damp out vibration. The double-wishbone rear suspension features new, strengthened components and pillow ball bushings for improved ride, straight-line stability, handling and vehicle response. Building on Subaru’s renown for safety (all 2011 Subaru model lines are IIHS “Top Safety Picks”), the 2012 Impreza was designed to excel under the new, more stringent NHTSA testing regimen. The new body structure makes greater use of high-tensile strength steel and features special stiffening elements at key locations. All 2012 Impreza models add a new driver’s knee airbag to the roster of safety features. The passenger-seat front airbag, features a shell-type design with a center groove, thus exposing the passenger to less impact force upon deployment. All Impreza models for 2012 are equipped as standard with Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), which combines stability and traction control functions. Likewise, all 2012 Impreza models are equipped with a standard 4-wheel disc Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and the Brake Assist safety system. Standard comfort and available amenities are increased across the Impreza line for 2012. The base model features a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, power windows, door locks and side mirrors, a 60/40-split fold-down rear seat, outside temperature gauge, a multi-function display with fuel economy information, remote keyless entry system, security system with engine immobilizer, tilt/telescopic steering wheel, variable intermittent windshield wipers and a low windshield washer fluid warning light. Even carpeted floormats, often an option in many cars, are standard equipment in all 2012 Impreza models. Impreza Premium models add 16-inch alloy wheels, steering wheel audio and Bluetooth® control switches, a rear stabilizer bar for crisper handling, adjustable console armrest, body-color exterior mirrors and chrome interior door handles. The standard audio system in the Premium models features Bluetooth® hands-free phone connectivity and audio streaming, Radio Data Broadcast System (RDBS), iPod® control capability, USB port, 3.5mm aux. input jack and six speakers. An optional All-Weather Package adds heated front seats, heated exterior mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer. A power moonroof and a navigation system are available for the Premium models. The new navigation system includes a 6.1-inch touch screen LCD display, voice control, iTunes® tagging, SMS text messaging capability, XM® Satellite Radio and XM NavTraffic (both XM services require subscriptions). Updated map data can be downloaded to a personal computer and then transferred into the system via secure digital (SD) card. The Impreza Sport Premium is a five-door model that combines standard 17-inch alloy wheels and the All-Weather Package with fog lights, roof rails, unique seat fabric and rocker panel spoilers. Topping the 2012 Impreza range, the Limited and Sport Limited (five-door only) models deliver the highest level of comfort and convenience ever offered in an Impreza. Leather seating, the All-Weather Package and Alloy Wheel Package are standard. A further audio upgrade (above the Premium) features a 4.3-inch display screen and standard HD Radio. The navigation system and power moonroof are options.
  16. Mercedes-Benz Shows Performance And Emissions Can Live In Harmony With The E63 2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 Gallery Benchmark for Performance and Efficiency April 20, 2011 - New York The E63 AMG is now even more powerful and efficient. As part of the "AMG Performance 2015" model strategy, the high-performance EClass now features the new 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine. Familiar from the 2012 CLS63 AMG this new engine can produce either 518 hp or 550 hp, together with an impressive reduction in fuel consumption - 22 percent less based on the European driving cycle. Also responsible for improved fuel economy is the newly developed electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering system which only draws power during steering wheel movements. The 2012MY E63 AMG goes on-sale in the U.S. this Fall. This eight-cylinder powerhouse, designated internally as the M157, boasts a combination of innovative high-tech components such as spray-guided direct gasoline injection with piezo injectors, a full aluminum crankcase, four-valve technology with camshaft adjustment, air/water intercooling, generator management and an Eco Stop/Start system. With a displacement of 5,461 cc the eight-cylinder engine develops a peak output of 518 hp and torque of 516 lb-ft. In conjunction with the optional AMG Performance Package, these figures increase to 550 hp and 590 lb-ft. Both variants of the E63 AMG achieve exceptional performance: acceleration from zero to 60 mph takes 4.4 and 4.3 seconds respectively and the top speed is 155 mph or 186 mph with the AMG Performance Package (electronically limited). Key data at a glance: Displacement: 5,461 cc Bore x stroke: 3.86 x 3.56 in Compression ratio: 10.0:1 Output: 518 hp at 5,250-5,750 rpm 550 hp at 5,250-5,750 rpm* Max. torque: 516 lb-ft at 1,700-5,000 rpm 590 lb-ft at 2,000-4,500 rpm* Engine weight (dry): 450 lb Acceleration: 0 - 60 mph 4.4 s 4.3 s* Top speed**: 155 mph (186 mph*) * with AMG Performance package; ** electronically limited; The improvements in output and torque that come with the AMG Performance Package can be attributed primarily to an increase in the maximum boost pressure from 14.5 to 18.8 psi. Visible differentiation is provided by a carbon fiber engine cover, AMG Performance steering wheel with black Alcantara side grips, red-painted brake calipers and a carbon fiber trunk lid spoiler. AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission helps save fuel The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission also plays a major role in the car's exemplary consumption figures. In place of a conventional torque converter, the MCT uses a compact wet start-up clutch. The 2012 E63 AMG also features a ECO Stop/Start function which is active in the Controlled Efficiency ("C") transmission mode and switches the eight-cylinder engine off when the vehicle comes to a stop. The ECO Stop/Start function can be activated or deactivated using the ECO button on the center console. When in transmission mode "C", the vehicle will always start-off in second gear. The system will also shift earlier and avoid high engine speeds. The demand-driven fuel pump and generator use braking energy during deceleration to further add to fuel economy. Even with these improvements performance is not compromised thanks to transmission modes "S" (Sport), "S+" (Sport plus) and "M" (Manual) which enhance the car's agility with shorter response times, higher engine speeds and sharper gear changes to harness the full potential of the new AMG V8 biturbo engine. In all three transmission modes, not only is the ECO Stop/Start system deactivated but the engine management system partially suppresses the cylinders at full load. This carefully managed interruption to ignition and injection results in faster gear changes and an exhilarating exhaust note - all aided by automatic rev-matching during shifts. AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension and new steering system The 2012 E63 AMG features the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with a specially designed front axle: the track has been widened by 2.2 inches and includes independent wheel carriers for increased negative camber at the front to improve grip during performance driving. Further features include steel suspension struts on the front axle and air suspension struts on the rear axle, with an automatic level control system and an electronically controlled damping system, which automatically adjusts the damping characteristics depending on driving conditions and reduces body roll. All this combines to provide lightningquick adjustment between optimum driving comfort and the best possible agility. The driver can switch between the three suspension modes of "Comfort", "Sport" and "Sport plus" at the touch of a button. The 2012 E63 AMG is also features a new electromechanical AMG speedsensitive sports steering system with a more direct ratio of 14:1 and variable power assistance that adapts according to the suspension mode. The new steering provides extremely agile handling through bends while also helping to reduce fuel consumption since the power assistance system only draws power when the vehicle is actually being steered. In addition to the 3-stage ESP® system with Sport mode, the E63 AMG features the AMG high-performance braking system with two-piece discs at the front. An even more powerful, 40 percent lighter AMG ceramic high-performance two-piece braking system is available as a special order option. Optimum grip comes courtesy of the new 19-inch AMG 10-spoke wheels with 255/35 R19 tires on the front and 285/30 R19 at the rear. The "flowforming" production process already used with the SLS AMG and the CLS63 AMG optimizes durability, while also reducing weight by up to 1.76 lb per wheel. Purposeful, aggressive exterior Externally, the E63 AMG with the new M157 engine is identifiable by its new light-alloy wheels and the "V8 BITURBO" lettering on its distinctive, wider front fenders. Further unique details include AMG bodystyling with a specific design for the front and rear along with AMG rocker panels and an AMG sports exhaust system with two chrome-plated twin tailpipes. Significantly upgraded interior A striking feature of the high-quality, exquisitely crafted interior is the new AMG Performance steering wheel in a three-spoke design. The rim of this wheel, as in the 2012 CLS63 AMG, is flattened at both top and bottom to facilitate even better control of the vehicle. Aluminum shift paddles, the perforated leather in the grip areas and the three-dimensional design of the airbag cover with its "Silver Shadow" metallic trim element complement the new E-SELECT shift lever with embossed AMG badge. Like the CLS63 AMG, the instrument cluster of the 2012 E63 AMG features a three-dimensional full-color TFT display in the center of the speedometer. The driver is welcomed by the AMG logo within the display upon opening the door. Driving assistance systems for added safety Numerous driver assistance systems in the 2012 E63 AMG help to avoid traffic accidents or mitigate their severity, such as Active Blind Spot Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist. Active Blind Spot Assist warns the driver if the short-range radar sensors detect a risk of collision should the vehicle change lanes. If the driver ignores these warnings and comes dangerously close to the vehicle in the next lane, Active Blind Spot Assist will intervene by applying braking force to the rear wheel on the opposite side of the vehicle, controlled through the 3-stage ESP® system, a yaw movement is created which corrects the car's path. Active Lane Keeping Assist is also linked to the 3-stage ESP® and activates when the driver inadvertently drifts over a solid line to the right or left of a lane. In this case, Active Lane Keeping Assist brakes the opposite rear wheel and prevents the vehicle from crossing the line. A display on the instrument cluster warns the driver at the same time. If broken lane markings are crossed, the system controls an electric pulse generator in the steering wheel which generates vibrations for a short time - a discreet but effective cue to countersteer immediately. Before the braking system intervenes, the steering wheel always vibrates to provide a warning. The 2012 E63 AMG with the new AMG 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine goes on-sale in the U.S. this Fall.
