  1. Mazda's replacement for the long running Tribute, the CX-5 was shown today at the LA Auto Show. The CX-5 is the first vehicle to use the full suite of Mazda’s SKYACTIV technologies, designed to reduce weight and increase fuel economy without ruining the sporty character of Mazda’s offerings. Power comes from a 2.0L SKYACTIV 4-cylinder producing 155 HP and 150 lb-ft of torque with power going to either the front wheels or the optional all-wheel drive system. Two transmissions will be available; a six-speed manual and six-speed automatic. The CX-5 is also very light for it's class; the FWD six-speed manual tips the scales at just over 3,200 pounds. Want a AWD CX-5 and six-speed automatic? That will tip the scales at 3,426 pounds. Fuel economy is rated at 26 city/33 highway for the CX-5 FWD model equipped with the six-speed manual while a CX-5 AWD equipped with the six-speed automatic gets 25 city/30 highway. The CX-5 arrives onto Mazda dealers in 2012. Press Release is on Page 2 ALL-NEW 2013 MAZDA CX-5 MAKES ITS NORTH AMERICAN DEBUT IN LOS ANGELES Compact SUV Features Full Suite of SKYACTIV Technologies, Offers Best-in-Class Fuel Economy LOS ANGELES (November 16, 2011) – Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today unveiled its all-new 2013 CX-5 compact SUV at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The North American debut is the first Mazda to fully encompass SKYACTIV®1 TECHNOLOGY, the brand’s engineering-focused philosophy toward improving all-around vehicle efficiency; the segment newcomer also offers best-in-class fuel economy. A sneak peek into Mazda’s new generation of vehicles, CX-5 embodies the perfect balance between the best of all worlds: captivating design, dynamic handling, unexpected efficiency, flexible functionality and first-class safety, with a dash of Zoom-Zoom. “The 2013 CX-5 is the vehicle compact SUV shoppers have been asking for – that only Mazda can build,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, MNAO. “Entering an extremely competitive segment, the all-new CX-5 has to offer more than just flash and features, but also has to perform and provide consumers with the dynamic response they’ve come to expect from Mazda – and it does. With its SKYACTIV underpinnings and best-in-class fuel economy, CX-5 proves that fun needn’t be sacrificed for fuel efficiency and that compact doesn’t equate compromise.” Reach for the Sky As the new kid on the block, the 2013 CX-5 had to do more than simply dress to impress on its first day in class. The vehicle needed to walk and talk that it belonged with its peers, but at the same time still evoke a level of emotional connection and driving passion worthy of the Mazda badge. This begins with SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY. Developed solely by Mazda, SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY is not a package or trim level, but an all-encompassing, deeply embedded philosophy that obtaining more power, torque and miles per gallon does not need to come at the expense of fuel economy, design and safety. Its first application was in Mazda’s best-selling Mazda3, refreshed for 2012 with a SKYACTIV engine and transmissions. CX-5 is the first vehicle to receive all SKYACTIV components Under an expansive hood lies the SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter gasoline engine. At 13:1, SKYACTIV-G features the world’s highest compression ratio for a mass-produced car. With its all-new 4-2-1 exhaust system, the 2013 CX-5 delivers 155 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, torque is measured at 150 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm and redline is reached at 6500 rpm. With a choice of transmissions in either the SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual or SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic, a 2,000-pound towing capacity and an optional all-wheel drive, the 2013 CX-5 truly offers a little of everything for everyone. And the competition is not nearly as competitive to the CX-5’s best-in-class fuel economy. Compared to the compact SUV segment’s other gasoline-power makes and models, the CX-5 is not afraid to make a statement by matching the best highway figures and trumping the competitive set’s city mileage. Estimated EPA fuel economy for the CX-5 is 26 city/33 highway for a front-wheel drive equipped with SKYACTIV-MT. When equipped with SKYACTIV-Drive, the front-wheel drive model garners 26 city/32 highway. The all-wheel drive version, only available with SKYACTIV-Drive, also is a fuel sipper with an EPA rating of 25 city/30 highway. Striking Style A new “signature wing” front grille dominates the front fascia. Its black elongated trapezoidal pattern adds masculine depth, while wing-shaped, wraparound headlamps extend out, seemingly flirting a head-turning “hello” to passersby. This is KODO. KODO, or “Soul of Motion,” is a design language inspired by nature which evokes how both startling beauty and immense power can be captured within a single motion. First unveiled in 2010 on the SHINARI concept car, a long and lean four-door sports coupe, and then on the MINAGI concept SUV earlier this year, from which CX-5 is based, KODO exemplifies the future direction of Mazda’s striking sheet metal strokes. The CX-5’s sculptured body features taut, compact lines. Shapely front and rear fenders hug the sporty SUV’s available 17- and 19-inch rubber-and-rim packages, projecting a wide, low-slung stance. A sweeping swoosh line bridges the four corners with sleek, artistic expression. Topside, a pronounced crease begins at the A-pillar and darts sharply across the side panels, eventually wrapping itself around stylized tail lamps. The sharply raked A-pillar is matched by the angles of the C-pillar and rear window, topping an aggressive profile which, at the same time, affords all occupants one of the widest fields of view in the segment. All these cuts in the sheet metal, the rounded surfaces and edgy creases, are as much for finesse as they are for function. With a targeted coefficient of drag of 0.33, the CX-5 aims to be the most aerodynamic compact SUV in the field. Not just for Zoom-Zoom but for the added benefit of improving fuel economy. Sensible Purpose Just as the exterior stirs the soul, the CX-5’s interior sparks the senses. Intuitive, with a multitude of frequently-used controls within reach, there is nothing you can’t do while ensconced in utmost comfort. Long and luxury-laced, the CX-5 sits on a segment-leading 106.3-inch wheelbase, seats five and offers a cabin that is undeniably flexible in order to accommodate the demands of today’s active lifestyles of all work and all play. Rear cargo room is not only cavernous but clever. With a three-piece independent 40/20/40-split fold-flat second row, the CX-5 shows that whatever is thrown its way, it will catch – with room left to spare. A single-action topside button releases the left- and right-side seats to fold down while a looped handle frees the middle seat, which also folds flat – a segment first. While the driver delights in all the glee of driving one of the most dynamically fun and satisfying compact SUVs on the road, there is no reason passengers can’t be allowed to enjoy the ride as well. Amongst the roomiest cabins in the segment, legroom for the second row is ample at 39.3 inches with an equally generous knee clearance of 2.6 inches. The wide cavity under the front seats also offers abundant rear passenger foot space and can be used as additional cargo room to hide personal belongings. Rear headroom is 39.0 inches for vehicles not equipped with a moonroof. Up front, both the driver and passenger can enjoy 40.1 inches of headroom (when not equipped with a moonroof), 57.5 inches for the broadest of shoulders and 41.0 inches to stretch their legs. Six- and eight-way power-adjustable seats will be standard on all but the entry-level models. Whether battling those curvaceous roads alone or rolling through town with a full house, commanding the sound studio on wheels is easily within reach for either the driver or front passenger. An all-new 5.8-inch touch screen becomes the center of attention with intuitive phone, audio and navigation functions. Streamlined steering wheel controls also enable a more straightforward operation of the infotainment system. Mazda’s advanced keyless entry system and push-button start get the CX-5 going. Other available features on the all-new 2013 CX-5 include Bluetooth® phone and audio connectivity and iPod® audio playback. A nine-speaker Bose® Centerpoint® Surround Sound system with AudioPilot® was jointly developed with Mazda to please even the most discerning music enthusiasts. The CX-5 also is available with HD Radio™ Technology, a subscription-free digital AM and FM broadcast radio service which provides crystal-clear sound, on-screen information and additional programming choices via HD2 and HD3 channels. In a first-time partnership with Mazda in North America, a TomTom® technology-based navigation system also will be offered and features premium North American maps, advanced lane guidance, intuitive voice recognition and real-time traffic. USB and auxiliary jack connections can be found in the center console storage bin and be accessed via the infotainment touch screen. Secure in Safety While safety never comes second, having the peace of mind to never have to worry about it in the first place is just as important. Being a compact SUV that doesn’t compromise, CX-5’s SKYACTIV-Body and SKYACTIV-Chassis ensure a vehicle structure as reinforced and quiet as it is rigid and absorbs impacts. Re-examining the suspension and steering systems, the lightweight construction of the SKYACTIV-Chassis includes a front strut suspension and a multi-link rear format along with an assortment of design changes. Precise and predictable, drivers will feel secure in a vehicle that reacts as they react and balances agility, stability, comfort and safety. The SKYACTIV-Body is comprised of 61 percent high-tensile steel, creating a lighter, stronger body with superior handling. As a result, the overall structure is eight percent lighter than previous Mazda models. The all-new CX-5 also has the distinction of being the first vehicle ever to utilize 1,800MPa ultra-high tensile steel in manufacturing. Located in the front and rear bumper beams, they are 20 percent stronger and 10.6 pounds lighter than previous generation bumpers. With the all-new CX-5, from the inside out, Mazda has spared no detail. Standard safety offerings include six airbags (front, side and full side-curtain), four wheel disk brakes, anti-lock brakes (ABS), daytime running lights, active headrests, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), a Traction Control System (TCS) and a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). Also available are a Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) system, Adaptive Front-Lighting System (AFLS) with auto-levelling bi-xenon headlamps and a rear view camera with distance guide lines.
  2. Jaguar is making their presence known today at the LA Auto Show by announcing the convertible version of their XKR-S. Jaguar says this is the fastest convertible they have built and judging from the 0-60 time of of 4.2 seconds and top speed of 186 mph, it's easy to see why. The XKR-S uses a supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 delivering 550 HP and 502 lb-feet of torque. An uprated six-speed automatic is standard. The XKR-S differentiates from other XK models due to it being fitted with track-tuned aerodynamic aids. These include a wider and lower air intake, a carbon fiber splitter, twin side nacelles.and a set of vertical panels on the edges of the bumper, that channel air down the side of the car along new sills. Other performance modifications include an active exhaust system, forged 20-inch wheels, uprated brakes, and revised aluminum suspension. Jaguar says the top takes around 18 seconds to go up or down, and can be activated at speeds of up to 15 mph. Inside the cabin there are new performance seats with 16 comfort adjustments, a multi-function leather steering wheel, and a gloss black center console. Only 25 XKR-S will be brought to the US for a price of $138,000. Press Release is on Page 2 Jaguar XKR-S Convertible Information At-A-Glance The XKR-S Convertible is the most powerful and fastest open-topped GT Jaguar has ever built. Lightweight aluminium architecture provides high torsional rigidity, making the XKR-S Convertible the stiffest car in its class. Revised front and rear suspension means increased agility, precision and control without sacrificing comfort. Uprated Adaptive Dynamics system allows the enthusiastic driver to safely exploit the exhilarating handling. Styling changes informed by Computational Fluid Dynamics to reduce lift and maximise aerodynamic stability. New front bumper design with wider, lower air intake, carbon fibre splitter and twin side nacelles. New sills smooth the horizontal airflow and emphasise the 10mm reduction in ride height. Unique rear wing with carbon fibre insert and apron ensure balanced aerodynamics front and rear. Convertible roof opens and stows in just 18 seconds. Flagship interior features 16-way adjustable Performance seats trimmed in carbon leather. Introduction The pinnacle of the Jaguar sporting range - the XKR-S - is now joined by a convertible which offers the same enticing blend of abilities, while offering driver and passenger a heightened connection with their surroundings. The XKR-S Convertible embodies all the characteristics that have always defined legendary Jaguar GTs - explosive performance, involving handling, relaxed comfort and discreet luxury - while taking Jaguar into a new performance echelon. The new XKR-S model line-up sits at the pinnacle of the XK range, which now consists of XK, XKR and XKR-S derivatives in coupe and convertible format. The XKR-S Convertible takes the raft of performance, dynamics, design and interior upgrades already introduced to much acclaim on its coupe sibling to create Jaguar's fastest ever open-topped GT. Adrian Hallmark, Jaguar Global Brand Director, says the new XKR-S Convertible represents the pinnacle of performance and glamour in motoring: "There is nothing as liberating as life behind the wheel of an open-topped Jaguar and the new XKR-S Convertible takes the Jaguar GT experience to new heights." The building block for the car's explosive performance is an uprated version of the 5.0-litre supercharged AJ-V8 engine, which produces 550PS (405kW) and 502lb/ft (680Nm) of torque. These figures represent a power increase of 8 percent and torque increase of 9 percent over the Jaguar XKR. Driving the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic gearbox with Active Differential, this propels the XKR-S Convertible to 60mph in 4.2 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.4 seconds) and on to an electronically limited top speed of 186mph (300km/h). Underpinning this potent performance is a comprehensive package of suspension upgrades which refine the XK's dynamic abilities still further, creating an intimate connection between the car, the driver and the road, enhanced still further in this open-topped GT. The lightweight aluminium structure of the XK has huge torsional rigidity, allowing the fitment of suspension components such as a redesigned aluminium front steering knuckle and revised rear geometry, stiffer springs and dampers. Allied to lightweight forged wheels and recalibrated steering settings this has allowed Jaguar's vehicle dynamics experts to create a supremely agile, connected driving experience with no loss in refinement. Reflecting the car's uprated dynamic abilities are interior and exterior styling changes. Externally the XKR-S Convertible is dramatically differentiated from other XK models with carefully calibrated aerodynamic aids that allow it to perform flawlessly at very high speeds. This sense of drama is continued inside the car with Jaguar Performance seats that feature increased support for driver and passenger during high-speed cornering. The seats are finished in carbon leather and feature 16-way adjustment and heating while carbon is also used to trim the cabin and emphasise the car's assertive nature. Design Extensive Computational Fluid Dynamics, wind tunnel and track work has resulted in the aerodynamic design changes applied to the XKR-S Convertible. These perform an essential function in maintaining stability in an open-topped car capable of speeds as high as 186mph (300km/h). These aerodynamic design changes give the front of the car a dramatic and bold appearance. Vertical feature lines run down from the edges of the oval air intake into a new bumper design which incorporates a wider, lower air intake, a carbon fibre splitter and twin side nacelles. At the edges of the bumper, vertical panels channel air down the side of the car along new sills, which serve to both smooth the horizontal airflow and emphasise the 10mm reduction in ride height. A unique rear wing with a carbon fibre inlay works in conjunction with a rear apron featuring a carbon fibre diffuser. The result is a reduction in overall lift of 26 percent and balanced aerodynamics front and rear to keep the car perfectly pinned to the road. The exterior changes are highlighted by the application of gloss black to the exterior brightwork, complemented by the dark technical finish of the lightweight, forged 20" Vulcan design alloy wheels through which can be seen the Jaguar High Performance Brake calipers finished in either an eye-catching red or discreet gunmetal. The XKR-S Convertible is available in a range of six colours, including Polaris White and British Racing Green, a tribute to Jaguar's competition heritage. The acoustically treated hood opens and stows in just 18 seconds and has been proven at the car's maximum speed. It comes in black as standard with a further six optional colours available. "Taking the track-oriented ethos of the XKR-S Coupe and applying it to a convertible is very exciting. There is a real spirit and thrill to driving with the roof down and in a car capable of these speeds that is going to be exaggerated to create a very dramatic and special experience." Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar Cars. Performance The engineering integrity of the acclaimed AJ-V8 petrol engine, now in its third generation, meant that Jaguar's engineers could derive the extra power and torque needed for the XKR-S. The advanced design of the quad-cam, all-aluminium AJ-V8 incorporates spray-guided direct injection and variable valve timing for great efficiency as well as prodigious power. The Roots-type twin-vortex supercharger nestling in the 'V' of the engine has twin intercoolers and is 20 percent more thermodynamically efficient than its predecessor. The result is 550PS and 680Nm, allowing the XKR-S Convertible to accelerate from a standstill to 60mph in just 4.2 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.4 seconds) and on to an electronically limited top speed of 186mph (300km/h). Liberating an extra 40PS and 55Nm over and above the XKR entailed remapping the fuelling characteristics and increasing exhaust gas flow though the use of an active exhaust system. With the roof lowered on the XKR-S Convertible the Performance Active exhaust system delivers an authentic, race-car inspired soundtrack that has been tuned to provide the driver with a thoroughly exhilarating driving experience. Dynamics With the XK model designed as a convertible from the outset, Jaguar's engineers were able to apply the changes that created the XKR-S Coupe into the open-topped GT without compromising performance, agility or refinement. Jaguar pioneered the use of aluminium in series production cars and it is this metal's low mass and high tensile strength that gives the XKR-S such a breadth of abilities. A kerb weight of 1795kg and torsional rigidity of 16,500 Newton metres per degree provide Jaguar's engineers a solid foundation on which to apply the detail changes that create the company's most involving convertible ever. Both front and rear suspension systems have been revised. A new aluminium steering knuckle in the front double wishbone suspension increases camber stiffness by 23 percent to provide even greater levels of steering accuracy and feedback. To increase stability and control, the Active Differential has been uprated to reduce steering sensitivity at very high speeds. Rear damper top mounts have been stiffened over and above the changes found on the XKR-S Coupe while the rear wheel steer effect has been optimised for agility. Spring rates front and rear have been increased by 28 percent while a bespoke Adaptive Damping programme for the XKR-S maximises body control, traction and grip. Unsprung mass has been reduced by nearly five percent through the fitment of lightweight, forged alloy wheels, which also offer greater traction and grip levels thanks to wider rear tyres that were specifically developed for use on the XKR-S and serve to increase the size of the tyre contact patch. The XKR-S convertible rides on Pirelli P-Zero tyres (255/35 ZR20 at the front and 295/30 ZR20 at the rear). In order to allow the enthusiastic driver to enjoy the benefits of these changes, the Dynamic Stability Control system has undergone bespoke changes. In Trac DSC mode, specific traction, stability and Active Differential settings reduce intervention levels and enhance mid-corner adjustability, allowing the exhilarating handling to be safely exploited to the full. The Jaguar High Performance Braking System fitted as standard is more than a match for the car's seductive performance. Huge brake discs - 380mm front and 376mm rear - in combination with aluminium calipers and pad area increases of 44 percent front and 31 percent rear in comparison to the XK provide confidence inspiring levels of power, stability and feel. "Because the XK was designed as a convertible it has great structural integrity. This allowed us to apply the XKR-S coupe's sporting suspension settings to create a convertible with no compromises. Its blend of great speed, precision and dynamism is given an extra dimension with the roof down and that thrilling exhaust soundtrack." Mike Cross, Chief Engineer, Vehicle Integrity Interior With the convertible hood stowed away, the interior of the XKR-S will be subject to as many envious glances as the exterior, with both highlighting the car's high performance intent. Exclusive to the XKR-S models are carbon-leather trimmed versions of Jaguar's Performance seats which feature integrated head rests, racing harness cut-outs and increased side and squab support to hold driver and passenger securely during high speed cornering. The 16-way adjustable, heated seats feature highlights of carbon leather and contrast micropiping unique to the model. Superb tactile interfaces are provided by the multifunction three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel and Jaguar-embossed bright stainless steel pedals. Other premium surfaces include soft-feel paint for the switches and a gloss black centre console. An exclusive dark aluminium finish is available as standard with an optional Piano Black finish also available. View full article
