  1. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com August 6, 2012 If you're one of those people who wanted a H1, or the actual wartime vehicle that inspired it, have we got some news for you. After a twelve year break from the civilian market, AM General is reportedly set to offer a kit-car of the C-Series HMMWV, or Humvee. The kit will meet U.S. government regulations and has been made possible by a deal with GM. The kit will include a body with 2,800 installed rivets, chassis with springs, cross members, geared hubs, half-shafts, differentials, a cooling package, two fuel tanks, and a soft top with soft doors. The only items you need to add is the engine and transmission (Duramax V8 diesel anyone?). Options will include protection plates for the rocker panels, driveline parts, a winch, heated windshield, geared fan drive, and a central tire inflation system. Pricing for the kit is expected to start around $59,000, with a completed Humvee costing around $75,000. Source: Hummer Guy William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. 3. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 4, 2012 "In recent weeks, you have seen that we do not hesitate to act when change is required to make the business stronger." Those words coming out of General Motors CEO Dan Akerson during a conference call with reporters this week. Akerson was referencing the recent outings of Global Marketing Chief Joel Ewanick and Dave Lyon, who was to become VP of design at GM Europe. Akerson went on to say, "from time to time, it will mean parting company with people who are not delivering expected results, or alternatively, who don't meet the highest standards for accountability or integrity." In terms of making the business strong, GM needs some help. Second quarter results saw revenue and net income drop when compared to the same time last year. Chalk the losses to the uneasy economy in Europe and Japanese Automakers coming back strongly after last year's earthquake. 5. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 3, 2012 Nissan has finally revealed the new Pathfinder, which will be arriving at Nissan dealers later in the fall. The new Pathfinder says goodbye to its truck-based platform and uses a unibody platform. The new platform, shared with the Infiniti JX crossover, helps the new Pathfinder drop 500 lbs and deliver a better ride. Some will cry and moan at the loss of the go anywhere attitude of the previous Pathfinder, but Nissan is ok with this. "The majority of our customers just don't go off road," says Tom Smith, director of SUV marketing at Nissan. "They're concerned with gas mileage, all-weather capabilities and having enough space for their families." Powering the new Pathfinder is a 3.5-liter DOHC V6 producing 260 HP and hooked up to Nissan's Xtronic CVT. The powertrain delivers fuel economy numbers of 20 City/26 Highway/22 Combined for the FWD model, and 19 City/25 Highway/21 Combined for the AWD model. Also, the Pathfinder is rated to tow 5,000 lbs. Inside, the Pathfinder will still seat seven people. Also, the Pathfinder will come with a a flexible seating system that allows you to move the second-row seat forward while a child-safety seat is installed. Other features for the new Pathfinder include a dual-panel moonroof that extends to the third row, Around View Monitor camera system, and much more. Nissan isn't saying the base price for the Pathfinder, but says it should start around $28,000. Press Release is on Page 2 2013 Nissan Pathfinder Gallery: NISSAN LAUNCHES REINVENTED 2013 PATHFINDER –MORE STYLE, COMFORT, ROOM, INNOVATION AND BEST-IN-CLASS FUEL ECONOMY 500-pound weight reduction from 2012 Pathfinder, aerodynamic design, new powertrain delivers 30 percent fuel economy improvement over last generation Best-in-class city, highway and combined fuel economy of 20/26//22 MPG* Most interior passenger volume, front headroom and legroom in class** Highest standard towing capacity in class** On sale at Nissan dealers nationwide this fall NEW YORK/DETROIT (Aug. 3, 2012) – Nissan today unleashed the all-new 2013 Pathfinder SUV, a complete makeover featuring a sleek, aerodynamically styled exterior, a premium interior, class-exclusive user-friendly technology and a new unibody platform and advanced drivetrain that helps it achieve best-in-class fuel economy while maintaining class-lead towing and off-pavement capabilities. The all-new vehicle design sheds 500 pounds of mass compared to the outgoing model yet maintains the Pathfinder’s SUV-ruggedness while delivering up to 26 miles per gallon on the highway. With its blend of capability, including class-leading standard towing capacity of 5000 pounds, and modern amenities, such as a class-exclusive Around View™ Monitor, the 2013 Pathfinder is the next-generation SUV. “Unveiling our next-generation Pathfinder is a major follow-up to the introduction of the all-new Altima sedan,” said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. “With its bold new design, best-in-class fuel economy and family adventure capabilities, our dealers can’t wait to share this new model with customers in their showrooms.” The 2013 Pathfinder’s fuel economy has improved more than 30 percent over that of the 2012 Pathfinder. Both the FWD and 4WD 2013 Pathfinder models lead their segments in fuel economy across the board. City, highway and combined average fuel economy numbers are 20 (City), 26 (Highway) and 22 (Combined) mpg for the FWD version and 19 (City), 25 (Highway) and 21 (Combined) mpg for the 4WD version. This significant increase over both the outgoing model’s fuel economy as well as that of the competition was achieved primarily through a new, aerodynamic vehicle design, 500 pounds of weight reduction, reduced engine friction and the application of a class-exclusive, next generation Xtronic CVT®. Also playing a significant role in the Pathfinder’s excellent fuel economy is the fact that it is now one of the lightest vehicles in its segment, with the FWD model tipping the scales at a mere 4149 pounds. Even the 4WD Pathfinder weighs only 4290 pounds. Nissan teased the new Pathfinder earlier this year, showing a concept exterior design model in January. Today marks the first official look at the production model, which goes on sale nationwide this fall. New Chassis Meets Consumer Shift Truck-based SUV sales peaked in the mid-2000s and have declined steadily as consumer demands shifted to more refined, fuel efficient crossover SUVs. The 2013 Pathfinder is built with unibody construction, vastly reducing its weight by eliminating the fuel-penalizing mass of a traditional SUV’s truck-based frame. In addition to making the Pathfinder a lighter vehicle, the new unibody chassis design increases Pathfinder’s structural rigidity over the previous model. This improves ride and handling, while reducing overall noise, vibration and harshness, delivering an outstanding mix of responsiveness, refinement and ride comfort. The Pathfinder’s rigid platform is also key to maintaining the trailer-towing capability expected from an SUV – the vehicle has a standard towing capacity of 5000 pounds, which is the best standard towing capacity in the segment.** “It’s no secret that the industry has shifted as gas prices have increased,” says Al Castignetti. “But while traditional SUV customers are looking for improved fuel economy, they still demand a vehicle that can do all the things they need, like carrying seven people, towing, and providing the surefootedness in all conditions of a four-wheel drive.” Weight reduction is one of the key components in Nissan’s drive to improving vehicle performance across the board. The just-introduced all-new Nissan Altima also is the lightest vehicle in its class. Bold Design Pathfinder’s design conveys modernity while paying homage to the three generations of Pathfinders before it. The new unibody platform provided the designers an opportunity to create a more aerodynamic exterior without compromising headroom or cargo capacity. In fact, the new Pathfinder has more interior space than the previous model thanks to more efficient packaging. Moving upscale in appearance, the new exterior styling presents a smart fusion of signature Nissan styling cues and dynamic strength. The look is adventure-ready with wheel-oriented muscular fenders and a strong, stable stance. The upper body features an open cabin with a low beltline and thin A- and D-pillars, which flow smoothly into the rugged, durable-looking lower body. Pathfinder’s design incorporates front and rear spoilers, rear tire deflectors and rear suspension fairings to help achieve what is expected to be among the best aerodynamic performances in the segment. Other exterior details include a wide chrome grille and large aerodynamic headlights, recessed front windshield wipers, chrome door handles and large rear combination lights. A panoramic dual-panel moonroof, with sliding opening front panel and fixed rear glass panel which extends over the 2nd and 3rd rows, combines with the large windows to create an open, airy interior environment. “With its new aerodynamic shape, the styling is a major step forward in the evolution of the SUV – retaining its people and cargo hauling utility without looking quite so utilitarian,” said Castignetti. “It’s fitting that a vehicle that tackles adventures in a whole new way also now looks the part.” Interior Pathfinder’s all-new interior design features versatile and comfortable seating as well as premium materials and advanced technology. The vehicle seats seven passengers comfortably, and is best-in-class in terms of front headroom, front leg room and overall passenger volume. Additionally, Pathfinder is now the only vehicle in the segment with a 3rd row seat recline. The new Advanced Drive-Assist™ Display, located in the center of the instrument display between the tachometer and speedometer, features a 4-inch color display that is customizable, easy-to-use and integrates key information right in front of the driver. A separate touch-screen monitor, mounted in the middle of the instrument panel, provides intuitive interaction and control of the available navigation system and other vehicle systems and settings. Technology and Innovation The all-new Pathfinder also features EZ Flex Seating System™ with LATCH AND GLIDE™. LATCH AND GLIDE™ is an industry first 2nd row tip-up seat for use with a child safety seat, which also provides easy access to the 3rd row while keeping the child seat securely fastened. The 2nd row also features a 60/40 split-fold seating with a segment best 5.5 inches of seat travel. Class-exclusive features include Easy Fill Tire Alert and the segment-first availability of an Around View™ Monitor. Other available amenities include leather-appointed seating, heated steering wheel, heated and cooled front seats, programmable Nissan Intelligent Key®, Nissan Navigation System, Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System, 13-speaker Bose® Premium Audio system, Satellite Radio (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately), Dual-Zone Climate Control, RearView Monitor, remote engine start and tri-zone entertainment system. New Powertrain All 2013 Pathfinders come equipped with an advanced 260-horsepower 3.5-liter DOHC V6 engine matched with a next-generation Xtronic CVT® (Continuously Variable Transmission). It is also the only vehicle in class with selectable 2WD, Auto or 4WD modes for the available intuitive ALL-MODE 4x4-i system. The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder will be offered in 4x4 and 4x2 drive configurations and in four models – S, SV, SL and Platinum. Pricing and Additional Details Pricing on all models will be announced closer to the fall on-sale date. Additional information is available at https://www.facebook...issanpathfinder and https://twitter.com/nissanpathfindr. 7. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 3, 2012 Back in March, Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös said the automaker is looking into alternative powertrains. Already, electric power has been kicked out due to the range and charging time being unacceptable. Now, it looks like another power option has been kicked to the curb. A source tells Autocar that Rolls-Royce asked their customers what they thought about diesels. The response was a resounding no. “A diesel has a lot of low-end torque. But customers are not going to cop it. It’s the perception of compromise. They wouldn’t entertain the idea. 9. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 3, 2012 SRT is readying two new special editions of the Grand Cherokee SRT8 for the 2013 model year. Named Vapor and Alpine, the difference between the two is black and white. Vapor comes in back, while Alpine comes in white, a first for the Grand Cherokee SRT8. Other than different paint jobs, the two are identical. Both come with 20-inch wheels with a black chrome finish, gloss black hood and door badging, grille surrounds and inserts, and tailgate trim. Besides the special editions, the 2013 Grand Cherokee SRT8 also sees a price increase. The 2013 model begins at $60,920, including $925 in destination charges. That's due to SRT making the Luxury Group package standard. The package added items like leather-wrapped door and instrument panels, adaptive cruise control, and a power liftgate. The Vapor and Alpine models start at $63,415. William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. He can be reached at [email protected] or you can follow him on twitter at @realmudmonster. Delivering outstanding driving performance in all conditions, and complemented by key SRT attributes – including functional, performance-oriented styling, world-class ride and handling, benchmark braking and race-inspired interior appointments – the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 runs from 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds, 0-100-0 mph in the mid-16 second range, can cover the quarter mile in the mid-13 second range, has a top speed of 160 mph, and brakes from 60-0 mph in 116 feet. Awe-inspiring powertrain Powering the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the 6.4-liter HEMI® V-8 with Fuel Saver Technology that delivers 470 horsepower (351 kW) and 465 lb.-ft. (630 N•m) of torque. An active intake manifold and high-lift camshaft with cam phasing delivers maximum low-end torque while optimizing high-end power across a wide rpm band. Specifically, 90-percent of peak torque is available between 2,800 and 6,000 rpm, allowing for inspired standing starts and improved straight-line performance. Standard Fuel Saver Technology and an active valve exhaust system allows four-cylinder operation to engage over a wide rpm range, to deliver both fuel efficiency and an extended range of 450 miles on one tank of gas. Standard steering wheel mounted paddle shifters join the standard Auto Stick on the floor. Both are mated to a proven automatic transmission, allowing a choice of spirited shifting on the road and the racetrack. Both methods give the driver the ability to shift while the transmission controller calibration prevents situations that might over rev the engine. Fully adaptive electronic control of all shifting makes the powertrain more responsive while minimizing harshness. Outstanding ride, handling and capability In 2011, all Jeep Grand Cherokee models received a vastly improved and refined on-road ride thanks in part to the vehicle’s new body structure. Torsional stiffness was improved 146 percent versus the previous generation model, for improved ride, durability and reduced noise, vibration and harshness. The improvements were achieved with more than 5,400 welds in the body alone, marking a 53-percent increase in spot welds, a 42-percent increase in arc welds and a 38-percent increase in structural adhesive. The 2013 Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the best handling Jeep vehicle ever – capable of .90 g on the skid pad – features a SRT-tuned, adaptive damping suspension managed by the Jeep Selec-Track system that interacts with several different systems (stability control, adaptive damping, transmission shift strategy, transfer case torque proportioning, Electronic Limited Slip Differential performance, throttle control and cylinder de-activation) to automatically tune the dynamics of the vehicle. Drivers can manually choose between five dynamic modes for specific driving conditions: Auto: provides the most compliant ride and automatically adapts to any road situation using the adaptive suspension tuning Sport: provides enhanced body control for a sporty, fun-to-drive ride for the street Tow: provides a safe reduction in pitch and bounce for enhanced towing capability Track: provides the high-performance, firm, “track-tuned” suspension option to lock down body motion for the ultimate handling experience Snow: provides the most conservative dynamic mode, so the vehicle will safely stay in-line in inclement winter weather conditions The standard Jeep Quadra-Trac SRT active on-demand four-wheel-drive transfer case uses input from a variety of sensors in order to determine tire slip at the earliest possible moment and take corrective action. The system uses Throttle Anticipate to sense quick movement in the throttle from a stop and maximizes traction before slippage occurs. When tire slippage is detected, the Jeep 4x4 system can transfer up to 100 percent of available torque to one rear wheel. The transfer case also enhances handling by proportioning torque between the front and rear axles to maintain the driver’s intended path. The Grand Cherokee SRT8 also features an Electronic Limited Slip Differential, which eliminates rear wheel slip and improves handling. The performance-tuned, fully hydraulic steering system uses a heavy-duty pump and pump cooler. Revised gearing gives drivers more direct feel and on-center response. Split 5-spoke, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels ride on P295/45ZR20 Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season run-flat tires or available Pirelli P Zero Three-season. Rounding out the capability of the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is a trailer tow rating of 5,000 lbs. Benchmark braking Chrysler Group’s SRT vehicles are well known for their world-class braking. Stopping power for the 2013 Grand Cherokee SRT8 comes courtesy of SRT high-performance Brembo brakes with four-wheel anti-lock brake system (ABS). Stopping distance performance of 116 feet from 60-0 mph is made possible by red-painted, Brembo 6-piston (front) and 4-piston (rear) calipers, and vented rotors at all four corners measuring 15-inches (front) and 13.8-inches (rear). Aggressive and functional exterior The functional performance exterior of the 2013 Grand Cherokee SRT8 features the “planted” look of a high-performance sports car by being lowered 1 inch and adding SRT-exclusive, body-color wheel flares and side sill cladding. A one-piece front fascia contains LED multi-function daytime running lamps that result in an exclusive face for the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, while a body-colored front grille with a unique black screen background and chrome bezel inserts add to the aggressive look. The integrated lower front grille is painted in gloss black and a underbody belly pan features integrated brake ducting to improve cooling and fade performance. 11. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 2, 2012 General Motors released their second quarter earnings report and the results are a bit disappointing. The company posted a net income of $1.5 billion and a revenue of $37.6 billion. Those numbers are significantly down from the same figures in the second quarter of 2011, when GM posted a net income of $2.5 billion and a revenue of $39.4 billion. That's a drop of 40% in income and a 4.6% drop in revenue. This announcement comes a day after GM released their sales results for July, which saw sales drop by 6% compared to 2011 sales. Part of the decline was due to declining fleet and rental sales. The other part was due to competitors like Toyota and Honda clawing back sales they had lost due the earthquake and tsunami last march. “Our results in North America, our International Operations and at GM Financial were solid but we clearly have more work to do to offset the headwinds we face, especially in regions like Europe and South America,” said GM CEO Dan Akerson. Europe was what hurt GM the most, posting a $400 million loss in the second quarter. That's a 400% increase when compared to a $100 million loss in the second quarter of last year. South America operations broke even in this quarter, but had posted $100 million profit in the second-quarter of 2011. GM International Operations, which includes the Chinese and Indian markets, posted a profit of $600 million, which matches second quarter results from last year. North America was one bright spot for GM, posting a $2 billion profit for the quarter, down from $2.2 billion in the second quarter of 2011. William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. Through June of this year, 61,214 diesel-powered vehicles have been sold in the U.S., an increase of 27.5%. That number might not sound like a lot, but sales of diesel vehicles are steadily climbing. From April to June, Diesel vehicles saw increases in sales ranging from 14.4% to 28.2%. This news comes in the face of the high price of a gallon of diesel compared to gas. AAA reports that the national average cost of a gallon of diesel is $3.780, compared with $3.521 a gallon for regular gas. "Despite some volatility in the auto market, clean-diesel auto sales have increased in 22 of the past 23 months with double-digit increases in 20 of those months. And diesel auto sales increased by more than 30 percent in 12 of these months," Allen Schaeffer, executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum, said in a statement. 21. HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA REPORTS RECORD JULY SALES Newly launched Elantra GT and Elantra Coupe push Elantra sales up 22 percent COSTA MESA, Calif., August 1, 2012 – Hyundai Motor America announced an all-time July sales record of 62,021 units, up four percent over last year’s all-time July record and up 9.5 percent, year-to-date. “July was another solid month for Hyundai with surging consumer demand dampened a bit by ongoing shortages of core products like Accent, Elantra, and Sonata. Our 27 day supply of vehicles is lowest of all brands and less than half of industry average inventory levels,” said Dave Zuchowski, executive vice president of sales. “This is a challenging situation in this hyper-competitive retail environment, so we are looking forward to August with great anticipation. Relief is definitely on the way with the first shipments of our all-new Santa Fe, built in West Point, Georgia, heading to dealers now and improved availability of recently launched and red hot Veloster Turbo, Elantra GT and Elantra Coupe.” The all-new Azera continued its strong sales pace resulting in an incredible 578 percent gain over last July. The Elantra family and Tucson saw sales gains of 22 percent and 17 percent, respectively, over the same period a year ago. Hyundai fleet sales and mix remained relatively low at 12 percent mix for the month and a 9.7 percent mix year-to-date, among the lowest in the industry. In keeping with its industry-leading fuel efficiency status, Hyundai achieved a corporate average fuel economy level of 37.1 (EPA estimated 28 MPG window label value) in July, while selling 23,517 vehicles (38 percent of total sales) with EPA estimated 40 MPG window label highway fuel economy ratings. “With the imminent addition of the third shift at our plant in Alabama increasing Elantra and Sonata production, and the launch of the new Santa Fe in Georgia underway right now, we’ll be better able to meet demand for our core products in the coming months,” said John Krafcik president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America.
