The plan to merger has ended as Honda wanted Nissan to become a subsidiary of Honda. Nissan obviously declined and now Nissan is looking for a new partner to dance with.

The link says that Nissan, Honda and Mitsubishi still want to work together to develop EVs.

The problem is that both Nissan and Mistubishi are just about out of money. No matter the marketing message of X amount of new ICE and EV models coming over the next 3 years, they are out of money to develop them and their arrogance of poor management will cause them to crash. Honda actually had more to loose taking them on as it would have benefited everyone but no one wants to bow to a new master.

For Nissan, Nissan is cooked either way.  Honda merger or not.

Nissan hasnt had a clear vision for itself since the mid to late 1980s.  With the success of their launches of 1st generation Altimas and sport sedan Maximas of the mid 1980s to the mid 1990s, hot compact car Sentra SE-Rs of the early 1990s, the 1st gen 240SXs and thr late 1980s300 ZXTTs, it started to go slowly down hill from the mid 1990s...  Infinity was always a unique offering true to Nissan vision, it really never had much of an identity to cling on which I have a feeling spilled over to the Nissan brand eventually...from the mid 1990s.

Their offroading SUVs from X-Trails to the Pathfinder and XTERRA took a little longer to lose their identities, they too, became vehicles with no purpose from Id say the 2010s.

And quite honestly, I dont think Honda would know what direction they would need to pull Nissan to as Honda too, has had identity problems which they havent figured out for themselves.

I agree with you @G. David Felt, Honda would have been dragged down to die as well.  Nissan is cooked. Mergering with Honda would have brought down Honda too.  I think Nissan is unsalvageable.

Nobody will really miss Nissan or Infiniti.  Does anyone care about Studebaker or Nash / Hudson / AMC?  Does anyone care about Daihatsu or Daewoo?

I honestly think Honda would have pushed out rebadges of Honda's as Nissan and Mitsubishi auto's.

Honda would have taken the Nissan and Mitsubishi body on frame trucks / SUVs to use that for better versions across all 3 lines, but I agree with you Olds, there is a high chance that Honda would have been eventually pulled down.

Will be interesting to see how the EV version for Honda and Acura continues to do in 2025 as they are selling all they make right now.
