Ron Gettelfinger Isn't a Bush Man

President Bush's trade policies, that is.

On Monday, the UAW leader argued that Bush's trade policies such as a free-trade proposal with Thailand are hurting the UAW and the American automotive industry. Gettelfinger also denounced Bush's "anti-union" stance. He told his delegates that it is time for a different relationship with domestic automakers as there are tough times ahead (as well as presently).

Our trade policies are funding our crusade in the middle east.

The automotive industry is hurt because its uncompetitive for many reasons, not because of free trade. In fact, the UAW is one cause, among those many, that GM is uncompetitive.

As a libertarian, I laugh at Gettelfinger. Protectionism would kill this country quicker than a jihadist invasion. Ok, not really, but it would be close. This country hasn't been able to compete with developing countries when it comes to cheap labor costs for decades. The sooner people realize this country no longer stands on the back of industry, the sooner we'll all be better off.
