Which vehicle out there offers the best combination of space, economy, and capability? The max numbers for the least cash.

When I think about it, I have to say Honda Element AWD. Anyone care to challenge my assertion? Is there something I'm forgetting?

I'd say HHR too, but I think it needs AWD to up the capability quotient.

Any used Ford van with over 200,000 miles can be picked up for likew $600, does that count? The xB is too small to really be in this fight. Does Ford still make a Focus wagon or 5-door? I'd have to say it is about a tie between the Element and HHR, the Element loses points for not having 4 real doors (and therefore not having 4 windows that can be rolled down for days when the weather is perfect for that) and the HHR loses points for lacking AWD. I'd have to look up EPA numbers on both, but I remember the Elements weren't as good as I'd like them to be, which cooled me off on the idea of getting one.

well, an aztek like mine equipped without too many goodies gets good mpg and holds like 90 c.ft of stuff and can be bought under GMEP for like 16 grand. base Ford Freestars and SWB Caravans can be had in the 16-17 range. The Freestar's mileage might be less than desired. The Element is a good choice, but can get pricey. A focus wagon holds an assload of stuff assuming you buy a cheaper version. Vans still are the most useful although the often lack AWD. most minivans will get 20 mpg. The Element doesn't really get much more than that. Edited by regfootball
