Buick News: Buick Velite 6 To Come In Plug-In and Electric Flavors

Buick is expanding their electrified options in China with the introduction of the Velite 6 plug-in hybrid and electric. They'll join the the Buick Velite 5 - a rebadged Chevrolet Volt.

The design is interesting to say in the least with a fair number of creases and a blacked-out rear pillar on this hatchback body. 

Arriving first is the plug-in hybrid which is comprised of a 1.5L four-cylinder, two AC permanent-magnet synchronous motors, and lithium-ion battery pack. With a full tank of gas and fully charged battery, Buick estimates a range of 700 kilometers (about 435 miles). Not much is known about the electric variant, aside from Buick saying the model "will adopt a new-generation pure electric drive system to offer customers a smooth, quiet and natural driving experience." The electric variant will arrive next year.

Both Velite 6 models will come with Buick's new eConnect cloud connectivity system. Different drivers can setup their own accounts to personalize settings for navigation, audio, and internet use. eConnect will also provide real-time intergration of WeChat, a Chinese social media service. Owners can use their smartphone as the key for the Velite 6.

WUZHEN – The Buick VELITE 6 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle and the Buick Enspire all-electric concept SUV made their global debut this evening at a launch event in the scenic Chinese city of Wuzhen, Zhejiang.

Buick also announced that the VELITE 6 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle will be launched this year and its sibling, the VELITE 6 electric vehicle, will be introduced in China at a later date.

Buick is focused on electrification, connectivity, intelligence and sharing in line with its Buick Blue new energy vehicle strategy. The VELITE 6 represents the latest application of this strategy.

The two VELITE 6 models leverage electrification and connectivity technology from SAIC-GM’s parent companies, including Buick’s newest electric propulsion technology and connectivity technology. They are based on the VELITE Concept new energy vehicle that was unveiled in November 2016.

The VELITE 6 has a dynamic posture coupled with a wide stance. The modern, streamlined shape aptly represents the innovative exterior styling that matches the new nameplate’s exciting technological character.

The high-performance propulsion system of the VELITE 6 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle is composed of an EVT electronically controlled variable transmission, two AC permanent-magnet synchronous motors with a high-performance lithium-ion battery, and a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine especially tuned for hybrid vehicles.

The motors and engine efficiently optimize power in different driving modes – such as the hybrid-driven mode of the motor and the engine, the single-driven mode of the motor, and the single-driven mode of the engine. It has a range of 700 km and combined fuel consumption of 1.4 liters/100 km.

The new-generation modular high-performance ternary lithium-ion battery pack will be assembled at the new state-of-the-art SAIC-GM Power Battery Development Center in Shanghai. The battery incorporates leading battery heat management technology, providing independent and uniform temperature control of each battery unit via liquid cooling. This will ensure a longer life cycle and more stable performance.

The VELITE 6 electric vehicle will adopt a new-generation pure electric drive system to offer customers a smooth, quiet and natural driving experience.

The flexible and open cloud-based Buick eConnect technology in both models enables cutting-edge services and over-the-air update capability. With exclusive accounts, users can personalize their settings for OnStar, navigation, internet use and more. Music and destinations can be sent to the car display screen via WeChat in real time, for one-button navigation and listening. Users can also directly receive information about their vehicles’ condition and recommended maintenance.

VELITE 6 users’ smartphones serve as a virtual key to enter and start the vehicle. They can authorize others to use their vehicles through their phones as well. Additional functions and new features will continuously be added to improve the user experience.

trinacriabob should like this because it has an upright, formal roof.  And look at the wheels-to-the-corners stance... so hot right now... there's like NEGATIVE overhangs... PLUS, it uses no gas, so dfelt should be pleased as well.  It's a WIN-WIN!

Nissan, Toyota, Tesla, GM, Volkswagen all want to sell 1 million EVs by as early as 2022 and as late 2026. These are sales targets...

Tesla wants 1 million by 2020. They dont have to production knowledge to do so.

Yes, change is hard.  Sure, electric vehicles are the future and we should embrace them. 

But EVs have to be better AND cheaper than current ICE cars because it makes little or no sense to switch unless it has a compelling value to the customer, not the environmentalists.

The issue with the USA resting on its laurels while the rest of the planet leapfrogs us is a serious issue.  Our current politics are such that few seem willing to embrace the future while SO Many Americans want to turn the clock back to 1980 if not 1960.  A lot of people in Middle America would rather have their factories (and jobs) back as if it was 1955 instead of chase the 21st Century, where they feel left behind. 

This country needs to radically upgrade our electrical grid for security and efficiency right now.  Many of our roads and several bridges badly need maintenance and repair right now.  Perhaps the only way we can address these crucial issues is that we need an external enemy that kick our butts and force some real changes.  Sputnik forced not only the creation of NASA but also a renewed interest in STEM and serious upgrades in almost everything.  Most of our current infrastructure dates from 1955-1975 or so, if not earlier.  China is in several ways passing us; India may do the same.  What do we do about these issues?

A lot of middle America would rather have their STANDARD OF LIVING back as if it were 1955. It's not about 'factories', although I do agree a solid manufacturing base is a worthy attribute/insurance policy.

Age of infrastructure is a distant secondary to condition of infrastructure. Yet too often I see 'age' as the criteria of judgement.

Actually I do!

Quebec politics circa 1970s.

There was the quiet revolution where the French people of Quebec fought back against their Anglais (English) overlords.

Montreal was the city of the future just a few years prior to 1970. Montreal thinks big in the 1960s. New highways, new subway systems. Expo '67 highlighted that.  New international airport that debuted in 1975 that was one of the most advanced and futuristic airports at that time. The idea to have an international airport AWAY from the main city and having highspeed trains connect your airport to the city along with that same high speed rail system connect you to the other major cities surrounding you. Those would be NYC, Boston and Toronto were all on the table. The Summer Olympics of 1976 was the pinnacle. Montreal was on top of the world.  Then politics got in the way. Twice. 

Those politics was necessary and for whatever reason. But Im not gonna delve into that as this is an automotive forum....

OK...it took Montreal 40 years to recover from that. Those politics, necessary as they were, blinded Quebec people for the next 40 years and it took away from progress. 40 years. In that time span, Toronto surpassed Montreal. Boston, from a small town that was beleaguered in ghetto crime and in organized crime saw itself rise into a wonderful metropolis itself.  Boston dug itself literally out of the hole with many projects, including the Big Dig. Stopped the crime, stopped the brain drain, kept its students. 

NYC saw the same thing. 

Montreal...although we are still fighting off that organized crime thing, we are only NOW growing. The quiet revolution brought out the change we wanted. At a cost. But there were other changes that we did NOT think of changing. We tried. But we failed because other shyte was going down.  When Montreal was on top of the world, we even got the 1st Major League Baseball team that was outside the USA. At our downfall, we lost this baseball team.

40 years of recession after recession after recession and broken down businesses. Empty building after empty building.  No new construction of anything. No new highways. No new international projects. No national pride. 

40 years to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure.  You think YOU guys have it bad? HA! 

Its worse in Quebec. Well, it was worse. 

As of now, not only are we thinking about new infrastructure as in extending our existing subway lines, we are introducing new electric rails for our people to commute. To highways. Extended highways. New bridges being built to replace the ones that are literary falling down. The Champlain Bridge is the busiest in Canada. Its failing. Its getting replaced... 

EVs...Quebecois are embracing them. It helps though that Quebec DOES have Hydro-electric power. It has now for 100 years...

The baseball team in Montreal will most probably be back with 5 years at the most.

Eventually, the high speed rail system will be made to connect Boston, NYC, Montreal and Toronto. 

Change...how fast you want it?

Believe me...40 years is a long phoquing time.  I do not think you want to wait that long.  I do not think some parts of America will have the same 40 years Montreal had. We were lucky to come out of it OK.  We were lucky to have resources at our finger tips.

Such as:

We do have more higher education institutions than Boston does. Good ones too. Along the lines of a Harvard. We DO have a population that is literate and speaks a MINIMUM of 2 languages. We DO have a MULTICULTURAL background that gives us an edge in seeing things from different angles... 

We have a port. Montreal's port is one of North America's busiest. One of the oldest in North America too. 

Our seaway trade goes further than that. The North American indigenous peoples used this rivers to trade with one another. 

Boston, NYC and New York State in general and other neighboring US states have a very close relationship with Quebec. 

Montreal survived this way.  When Toronto and Ottawa were not so kind to Montreal and Quebec, we did have the US to turn to.  Does Lancaster Pennsylvania have these same resources?

Montreal was stuck in 1967 to1976 a looooong phoquing time!  It was NOT pleasant. We had our joie de vivre...but that was it...

America better take care of herself going forward because if America does NOT educate herself, take care of her schools....which is a huuuuge problem, does NOT influence and does NOT accept influence from others, and just keeps on closing her mind to change, does NOT go with the flow, wants to keep that status quo, in trying desperately to keep America in 1955, America is in grave danger.
