i have a dark theory....

as some buyer groups get younger and younger, and some of them buy their first cars even, the percentage of buyer pool that sees the American brands as tainted (despite them being quite good) increases, and in particular, the love for BMW, Audi, Mercedes continues.........

the side point is that GM in particular has few market bullseyes these days. and many of its new models are overpriced or non discounted.....

Tainted? What is this, 1980? 1990?

Lack of discounts might work as a theory perhaps, but GM needs profits and cash flow NOT "move the metal" which led to BK a decade ago.  The love for the German automakers is still quite irrational, even after 40 years of all their hype.

• Buyers as a whole are getting OLDER, not younger. Not sure how sub"groups" of buyers get singled out & age median-ed.
• The only shading I foresee is the whole 'my father's/mother's brand' stigma, which often drives younger generations in another direction. That would not bode as well for the mainstream high-volume brands.
• EVERYTHING is overpriced, but for some strange reason, the MSRPs of GM models gets disproportional attention as what buyers actually pay. Very few models of any brand get sticker price/ most everything is discounted in one way or another.
• GM is doing VERY well profit-wise: $9.4B in 2016.

I have to disagree with you as you look at who is selling auto's and have a decent profit and amazing, but GM is leading the North America Market followed by Toyota big difference in year totals sold and then Ford, FCA and Nissan. BMW and MB are very distant.

Clearly you have not been in a Denali Terrain, a POP CAN it is not. Look at Toyota, VW, even MB or BMW for the pop can CUV.

my local toyoyo dealer has numerous '18 Plastic Fantastic RAV4's in inventory at $37K. My buddy, actively shopping for an SUV, wouldn't even climb inside one once he opened the door, they're so awful. Another $9K for a much better vehicle sounds right if the RAV4 is 'not over-priced'.

I am sorry but there is no way in hell Terrain worth close to $50k in any shape or form.

Sat in the Terrain at the auto show last weekend...huge blind spots from the strange windows set in the c-pillars...small and rectangular, kind of like '70s opera windows.   It didn't seem that different from other compact CUVs other than some quirky features like the toggle button shifter .. other than squarer styling and more chrome, the GMC crossovers didn't seem any nicer than the other transverse 4cyl car-based generic lease appliances from Chevy, Buick, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, etc...don't really see where the marketing 'professional grade' BS applies to these...so boring....

Not exactly what you said, you said that you would rather pay extra $9k for Terrain which I call BS with all due respect.   Terrain is not much better or in some way even worse than any other loaded CUV on the market and while paying for any other CUV close to $40k is a lot, paying for Terrain close to $50 is ridiculous.

46k for a compact CUV is entry luxury territory.. Are the interiors on the level of Lexus, Lincoln, Acura, or even BMW, Mercedes, or Audi?

I mean a GLC starts at $40,050, X3 starts at $42,650, Q5: $41,500. Even the larger MKX/Nautilus starts at $39,035.

At least that Rav4 wasn't priced next to those guys

At lease some of the price of the Terrain comes from the powertrain.  You get your choice of a naturally aspirated 4-cylinder with a 6-speed auto or a Hybrid 4-cylinder with a 6-speed auto.  The Terrain at the higher prices gets you a 2.0t and 10-speed or the new Turbo-diesel.

I have an issue paying $34k for a naturally aspirated 4-cylinder in a economy crossover

At least in the Terrain's case, it sells at the top end of its price range.

Well, most of that price is the leather and electronics, and you get quite a lot of electronics today which cost money.  I think all the active safety features we have today are what caused the biggest price increase.

I get that... but when I cross the $30k mark, I want more than a naturally aspirated 4-cylinder.  Not an option in a RAV4

Because if it's priced that high it's in that territory. Hence my question, is the interior to the level of those at that price range?

Yeah, no thank you! Why is that an option at that price? The base engine should be whatever turbo 4cyl the Cruze has and the 2.0T as an option.

Er... the Terrain does not have any naturally aspirated engines at all. It has the 1.5T, 2.0T, and 1.6TD.  I was talking about the RAV4 being only NA 2.5 or Hybrid 2.5

I agree, but RAV4 is old design.  I am sure next generation will have turbo-four like CR-V and pretty much the rest of the segment.

Hard to say.. New Camry 4 cylinder is still NA.

I would still bet on a naturally aspirated 4 cylinder (shared with Camry) and much improved HEV/PHEV option(s).  Maybe a 6 cylinder if they are not planning on a midsize two two CUV to slot between it and the Highlander.

Hopefully they keep the cargo area of the RAV4 on the larger size of the compact CUVs like the CRV, not the GM's or Koreans.

Ohhhh I thought you meant the Terrain. Okay, so it does have the 1.5T standard. That makes more sense.

Wow. At those prices for a (loaded) Terrain, why not buy a Buick Envision instead?  Nicer CUV and possibly a better value.

The GMC has a bigger grille and bigger badges.

Because most would prefer a GMC over a Buick. That's literally the only real reason. That'd be the only reason I'd buy a Terrain over an Envision.

The more I see the new Terrains out in the wild the less i like them. When they were first introduced i thought they looked pretty sharp but the more I see them the less i like them. There's just something about them that I do not like.

Since Toyota has killed off one maybe two of the Prius models. I wonder if the next Rav 4 will have a Prius based powertrain with an upgraded hybrid powertrain option. Maybe bigger battery pack or electric motors.

Base Turbo 4 banger

Prius Powertrain Hybrid

Performance Hybrid Powertrain.

That is how I would approach it now.

Totally agree, I helped my sister buy a fully loaded Buick Envision Premium II for $38,000 plus tax and license and way better than a Terrain Denali at $50K

Test drive a GMC Terrain Denali and then a Buick Envision Premium II and you will see why the Envision beats the Terrain. No if, an or butts about it. The Envision is the better CUV to buy.

Yep, that is enough for a GLC or Q5 or X3 with 1 option package.

Then you should look at a Buick Envision, since that CUV is a better value at the price you listed.

Posted

Up until the coming 2019 Envision, the Terrain had some distinct technical advantages over the Buick, but for 2019 they are more evenly matched.  I do think the Terrain is a bit overpriced, but if you can get over that, then something like a $45k Terrain Denali Turbo Diesel does have some advantages over an equivalently priced Envision.   The Terrain also does feel slightly more roomy even if the numbers don't play that out.   The base model engine of the Terrain is better than the base model engine of the Envision, and for some reason Buick makes you pony up for the 2.0T to get AWD when AWD can come in the 1.5T in the Terrain.

Pluses and minuses all around depending on your priorities.

Edit: Apparently my knowledge was out of date and you can get the 2.5 with AWD in the Envision.  That must have been a first year only thing.

Not a huge fan of the Terrain but I still prefer them to the look of the new Equinox by far.  I value interior space and at the prices they are asking I would rather just get a midsize CUV.

Yeah it seems the more and more I see the new Equinox the less I like the looks of it.. Most new things I see I don't like initially and the look grows on me. Not so much with the Equinox.
