Musk Throws Fit, Tesla Model S Goes from Good to Acceptable!

teslamodelscrashtest.png

Tesla claimed they had the safest auto's in the world and this was backed up by their 2013 IIHS testing of the Model S that received all good marks. Since then 4 years have passed and IIHS has upped their crash testing standards and other auto companies have stayed on top of the game to be the best around. As such the lastest 2017 IIHS test showed that the safest auto's this year were the all new Lincoln Continental, Mercedes Benz E-Class and Toyota Avalon. Earning acceptable ratings were Tesla Model S, Chevrolet Impala and Ford Taurus.

As such Tesla fired off the following statement:

"While IIHS and dozens of other private industry groups around the world have methods and motivations that suit their own subjective purposes, the most objective and accurate independent testing of vehicle safety is currently done by the U.S. Government which found Model S and Model X to be the two cars with the lowest probability of injury of any cars that it has ever tested, making them the safest cars in history."

It is called progress, he is one of the people who should clearly see that.  The fact that a bunch of newer cars meet new IIHS requirements just shows that he needs to keep up just like everybody else.

Exactly.  I love competition and the free amrket, it raises a lot of boats...and keeps people on their toes.

Also...if VW can take the MK 6 Jetta a car that usually sells for 20K, and make it much better in terms of crash test safety,...Musk and his team can do the same thing with a 100K S.

@ykX & @A Horse With No Name seems Tesla is in the crosshairs of multiple issues. While the Model X is on the list of 2017 Top ratings as the safest SUV now and this makes one wonder why they throw a fit over the Model S downgrade when they have done nothing to improve it of much lately. AAA just increased all Tesla Insurance rates by 30% after deep analysis of claims showing the Tesla models are far more expensive to repair and the owners have much higher claim rates due to accidents.

Loved this quote:

AAA is confident the data speaks for itself.

"Looking at a much broader set of countrywide data, we saw the same patterns observed in our own data, and that gave us the confidence to change rates," Anthony Ptasznik, chief actuary of AAA, said.

Tesla recently updated its maintenance plans to include higher rates, but also include hardware updates.

Digging into the details reveals quite a bit of activity from Tesla owners and their insurance companies.

The Model S is involved in 46 percent more claims than average, and the claims cost twice as much than the average.

Model X owners filed claims 41 percent more often compared to the average and repairs cost 89 percent more than the average insurance claim.

My daughter loves cars and just took a job as an automotive claims adjuster after graduating from college. Last night at dinner she had us in stiches about a certain Jaguar owner that had multiple claims from the same weekend, all owner initiated stupidity.

Repairing these vehicles is very, very expensive at times.

Which is why if I were going to get an SUV i would honest to god consider very strongly an Escalade-all much less expensive GM parts, easy and less expensive to repair, and will tow any fun toy or tool I want to pull behind it.

As much as I love European cars...at some point repair costs have to enter into the calculus of ownership.
