Glad to see VW up....

Painful month for FCA though...

Painfull for mostly everyone. Clearly the auto market is turning down and I bet will be soft for the rest of this year and into next year if not soft till 2019 as things cool off. They have been on a rip roaring pace for a number of years.

Interesting that electric cars seem to be doing just fine...even the antiquated and overpriced Leaf is up...

Leaf is understandable, Nissan is extending all current lease owners till version 2.0 is out so they can roll over to the newer one and are giving away just about existing leases on leaf 1.0 to keep it going as they have had a defection of people to the BOLT.

FCA is hurting and there is no end in sight for that because Chrysler-Dodge-Fiat have no new product coming.  Keep being down double digits several months in a row now is surprising because they have a new Compass to sell.  Alfa is so small they don't matter.

Good month for VW stable.  Surprised that Acura is up so much when there is nothing new over there.  And they don't have a great line anyway.

Actually I am starting to see why Benz sells so many vehicles.  Compared to the lame ILX or the MKC...Benz is a rock star from an automotive standpoint.

Wow, Only Buick is up, and by double digits.  Cadillac, Chevy, and GMC all down 3.5% or more.  What am I missing here?

I don't know...but it is odd!

Cadillac has a lack of crossovers, that kills them.  Chevy needs a new Traverse and a crossover under Traverse, above Equinox.

Ford, GMC, and Chevy all get big numbers from full size pick-ups and SUVs, the cost on those is pretty high, and at some point the price goes up so high that even 6-7 year car loans can't make them affordable for people who for the most part aren't seeing any pay raises but are seeing the cost of everything else go up.

^^^ nail on the head.

I think in dog days of summer, with ending of model year, incentives can swing buyer decisions drastically.

There is a lot of big shifts here. VW is probably benefiting from the atlas and other reasons

agree that GM is still behind the curve on crossovers. I don't think the new equinox is killing it, and now there's a big gap left for the blazer and the new traverse isn't out yet. New crv and likes of Tiguan are gonna crush it and chevy decides to actually go smaller (smh)

hyundai in particular is very puzzling too. They are often easiest to get money on.

Xt5 is killin it though and making nice coin for gm

New Traverse is on sale and on fire.  I didn't realize the new one was on sale already.  Chevy sedans got killed.  The large sedan market is just disappearing.

Subaru is doing very well for itself also!

Subaru has done something like double is American market sales since 2007 or 2008.  They do a good job pushing the safety with all wheel drive and eye sight, and I think there is a lot of appeal with that brand to older buyers you like that sort of security.

Are Chevy and Cadillac supposed to go CUV and SUV only?  If so, be careful.  Before the last recession (and big spike in gas prices) there was talk of Chevy going trucks and SUVs only.  $4+ per gallon made that idea look really stupid.  Cadillac could use a smaller version of the XT5 pronto.  Chevy already has three; I doubt they need four CUVs.

Actually they appeal to a lot of younger buyers also...I have three children in their twenties and all three of them seem to have a lot of friends who drive Subarus.

A brand like Chevy that is full line could support 6 crossovers.  Crossovers outsell sedans and coupes combined and look at how many sedans and coupes Chevy has.  Once they start dropping car lines, they will put more crossovers in.

Should manufacturers also drop halo cars, flagship cars and sports car to build more CUVs?
You know- the full line mainstreams brands?
Why not? (because I already know the answer here)

Even without a lot of truck sales, few CUV choices and virtually no fleet dumping, my beloved Honda is more or less even.  This makes me happy.

Honda does NOT make trucks.  The Ridgeline is a rebodied Odyssey.

It is strange that Honda only makes the CR-V, the HR-V, the Pilot and not much else other than cars and the Odyssey.  Yet in this CUV era, Honda does continue to sell just fine as if they were unaffected by anything.  It is rare that Honda sells anything to fleets at all.

I am not saying Chevy should drop the Corvette or anything.  But do they need a Sonic and Cruze?  Or could those merge into one product?  Impala is going to die just because the segment is.  Personally, I would down size the Cruze and kill  the Sonic, offer, a 3 door, 5 door and a sedan of it.  Downsize the Malibu to about 185 inches long, cut the price to $19k base, and I would downsize the Impala to the size of the current Malibu and cut the price to $23k base.

Posted

I've always thought there were too many models too close together in size, for ALL the mainstream brands.

40 years ago, when you had a loaded Chevette if you had an AM-FM and a console, things were different. Now every size class has display screens, full power everything, AWD, turbos, etc- most of the differences left are styling (a lateral) and size (again: too close together). If there's not 12" in overall length difference between adjacent model lines, you're doing it wrong/ wasting development millions.

RE: Chevrolet- the Spark is horrid, kill that. Sonic has the 4-dr and 4-dr hatch, not sure the market is asking for a 2-dr hatch tho. Then you'd have the core 4 : Sonic, Cruze, Malibu, Impala. Add Bolt & Volt, which are more laterals off the Sonic & Cruze (or is it the Malibu?), and the car lines are done. Camaro & Corvette obvious are standouts, and stay.

Outside of trucks, once the new Accord debuts, they will have one of the fresher lineups in the heart of the market (compact car, compact CUV, midsize sedan and I guess subcompact CUV's are up there now too) along with Chevrolet, and all of them are pretty much at or near the top of their class in sales.

Even with the new Accord, their lineup looks dated, looks stale and is so frumpy from over conservative style that it will only appeal to hard core Honda fans. Their product line will NOT win Market share.

Just soso interiors even in their newest auto's and small tight interior room. Honda need fresh blood from outside the company not more of their yes sir lemming employees.

You might have to tell that to my neighbor and the issues he is having with his new CRV. While Honda can be good, they are far from perfect....

Besides the Ru', those up in sales slapped on the discounts....I expect pretty much everyone to follow that starting this month.....the 18 model year is not looking good at all......

Gm is not going to get rid of the car lines.  They sell enough to keep them going and should.  Gas and peoples preference will change again.

VW is a joke they are only up because of how down they were last year.  I could care less about them there cars aren't great and all look the same.  The Atlas is going to be a big flop.

I can say that about all the asian and german brands on top of the US brands. They all have good times and bad times. Right now the GM and to a certain point FORD are doing way better than the Germans and many of the Asians.

Back in the olden days GM could afford to keep everything around......like when they could give away cavaliers and cobalts because of the nice profits on trucks....but times are not like that anymore...

I can look at GM's lineup and tell you that at least 6 (should be no more) models that will disappear within the next 2-3 years. It;s not all doom and gloom though, as I'm sure some could come back later. Didn't take long for small trucks to come back. It's one of the few times being global helps you out a bit- I can even see automakers working together again on sharing more models at some point....

VW is paying for those mistakes they made....and I would never underestimate them too much....

Again contrast this with how dated Fords passenger car lineup is.

In the 3 classes where 300k unit sales for a model is possible, Ford is really dated..  I don't see a viable entry from them in the subcompact CUV class yet either.

VW needs to offer the SWB Tiguan too but maybe they haven't figured out a way to do it cheaply enough.

So True, I totally agree. VW has not learned how to build cheap enough nor have they figured out how to really build for the North American market just as GM and Ford have not figured out how to build for the European market.

Disagree....the Fiesta is the number one selling car in Britain according to one source I read.

VW is up 15 percent and Ford is down five percent for a Delta (difference) of 20 percent...that doesn't happen in a down amrket for no reason.

I understand your point of view. Being ahead of some who are already low is not that great of a gain. But Honda appeals to certain types of peeps.

Fiesta is the rare auto that also sells in a much higher trim form in Europe. The rest of Fords product line and pretty much all of GM is a failure to that market sadly. Like VW here in North America, Ford and GM have not yet figured out the market dynamics.

Still on the fence in regards to VW CUVs if they will truly capture market share of just move sales from cars to cuv's.

We will see what will happen...

And yes, VW lacks a rational marketing plan for the North American amrket, and Europeans do not tend to prefer American cars.  My only point was it was not absolute, there are exceptions.
