Subaru News: Spying: Subaru 'Ascends' the Three-Row Crossover Mountain

It is no secret that Subaru is wanting to get back in the three-row crossover fight after the failure of the Tribeca. We got our first preview last year at the LA Auto Show with the Viziv-7 Concept and now we're getting some idea of what the production version will look like thanks to some spy shots.

From all angles, the production version (possibly named Ascent) is heavily toned down from the Viziv-7 concept. The front end is reminiscent to the Outback with the large grille and smaller headlights. Around back, the Ascent loses the aggressive bumper design found on the concept but it looks like the design of the tailgate remains.

It is expected that Subaru's upcoming crossover will use the new modular platform that underpins the Impreza. We still don't have any idea on what will power it, but it would be safe to assume a CVT and all-wheel drive will come standard.

Subaru will reveal the Ascent sometime next year.

Interesting, how can they continue to ignor the excitement that is created from the concept.

Have to say very good camo.

Wonder why no Fender Flairs? That would like the concept give it more personality.

It's a Forester that someone put on the photocopier and hit "Enlarge 150%"

Nahh, It is going to be enlarged Outback.  Probably same H6 engine and CVT transmission too.

Subaru sales have doubled I think in the past 10 years.  They'll sell a bunch of these, because people want crossovers.  And how long have they been selling sedans and wagons to people that now have bigger families and need more space.  They used to lose those customers, now they can keep them

It will probably look boring, but they need a 3 row crossover badly, and not a disaster like the B9 Tribeca was.

CVT is a vehicle this size......ugh, hard pass.

Hard pass indeed...it is vehicles like this that will sell to the masses in droves that kill my enthusiasm for cars.
