Fantastic month for GM!

Really interesting seeing the huge gains in CUV sales and mostly losses in the car ranges.  Know the Rogue beat out the Rav 4 for Dec and very interested to see how it stacked up to the CR-V.  Maybe the Star Wars Rogue one mash-up really helped haha.

That is to be expected as the Patriot and current Compass are phased out, along with the Dart and 200.  This is absolutely expected and no big deal.

Good to see GM end the year on a positive note. FCA is beyond hurting when Jeeps sales are declining. Probably temporary but not a good sign if this goes on for an extended period of time.

remember, they are losing the Patriot altogether which generally accounted for 10 to 12k sales a month and not replacing it.  Sales will be down for sometime unless the Compass picks up all of the lost Patriot/Compass sales or all the Patriot interest goes to the Renegade which i don't really see happening.

And it is less than a year away from a MAJOR MCE.  And that just happened to be a VERY huge month last year.  Mustang Sales for example, where down at least that much.

My big worry is that the new Compass will no doubt be quite a bit pricier than the current one and the Patriot which will drive sales down comparatively in concert with having 1 less model to sell.  Oddly enough I think you are more optimistic here than I am lol.

Yet total sales are quite a few thousand less than the Cherokee which means yes, that lower percentage is just as painful for the Mustang, especially since it doesn't have stablemates based on the same platform to make up the slack.  

 

We could bring up the Fusion and the fact it is down 25% despite a decently heavy refresh and new submodels for 17.

Yet Jeep Division is down, Ford CUV/SUV is up. Taking in consumer buying preferences, that hopefully won't become a trend for Jeep.

Speaking of obvious, one should note that only the Cherokee and the Patriot are down and being that the Patriots reason is because it is a goner, Jeeps situation is not near as dire as you are making it out to be. All of Ford is not okay either. The Escape was down for the month and the Explorer is down for the whole year. That is what's obvious here.

FCA is going in the sales tank, and the 200 and Dart are still on sale, and the 300/Charger aren't getting an update for 4 more years.  I think the Caravan is still on sale too, and about to go away.

200 and Dart have already stopped production as have the older compass and Patriot.  The 200/Dart plant are to be retooled for more popular truck/CUV production while the LX cars will get 1 more major refresh before the next generation appears.  What they are doing makes sense for the here and now.  Cut out the fat and put your production capacity into what people want to buy.

Unlike the Chrysler Divisions of FCA, neither Mazda or Mitsu has been full line and volume sellers ( in their history ) in North America.

LOL, If each brand under FCA was full volume, you would have a ooint, but all together the amount of models equal to the same amount, or even fewer, vehicles than some single brands.  Bigger picture.  Fiat is the smaller cars and a single SUV, Chrysler has a minivan and 1 fullsize car, Dodge has 2 cars, a van, and 2 SUVs, Jeep is 5 SUVs now, Ram is a truck and 2 commercial brands. 

 

Ford and lincoln are 2 small cars, a sports car, a hybrid micro minivan, 3 minvans/fullsuize vans, mostly commercial, between ford and lincoln they had 8 SUVs, 2 midsize cars, 2 fullsize cars, 2 pickup trucks, and their volume isn't a hell of a lot more than FCA considering they have more models and additional production capacity.. 

 

Ford also has much more production capacity which helps to have vehicles on the lot to sell.  FCA can't even keep up with Wrangler or Ram sales right now, though that is all about to change.

It's a shame Mazda has poor sales because there is very minimal things to read negatively about any of them. Hell, if I could find a Grand Touring Mazda3 or CX5 in my price range I would likely be buying them over other compact hatches/CUVs.

yes, I looked at some 3s but the newer ones were out of price rang for now.  Really would love a Hatch with the 2.5

The 3 hatch has always been my favorite Mazda but like Stew said, they are just a little too pricey.

My only guess is their lack of a dealer network compared to everything they compete with.

Right now our Mazda dealer has a whopping 11 vehicles.  That includes 1 2i sedan and 1 3i hatchback.

I just GooogleMap'd my nearest Mazda dealer and it is 28.7(39 minutes) miles away and I guarantee I would be passing 1-3 GM/Ford dealers plus the other Japanese brands within that distance.

I am in the bigger the truck the better land lmao.  I do wonder what kind of inventory other Mazda dealerships keep?  The old ranger based B-series pickups were quite popular here.  maybe they should look back into the pickup arena?
