Ram News: FCA Considers A Full-Size SUV Using Next-Gen Ram 1500

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is considering whether or not to do a large SUV. This model would take on the likes of the Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon and Ford Expedition. Large SUVs are also big money makers. According to analysts, GM makes $10,000 or more on their large SUVs.

"While crossovers are all anyone wants to talk about, the money is still in pickups and SUVs. FCA needs to enter this segment. FCA is chasing profit-driving vehicles and they are missing out on a major one, just as Ford is getting ready to launch an all-aluminum Expedition," said Dave Sullivan, an automotive analyst for Auto Pacific to the Detroit Free Press.

Mike Manley, head of Jeep and Ram brands told the paper last month they are putting some thought into doing a large SUV. This possible new model might use the platform for the next-generation Ram truck - due out in 2018.

"You have the opportunity with a new frame for the next-generation Ram. You have the opportunity to take a large SUV off of it because we already have a very, very capable frame today that is going to be upgraded," said Manley.

One item Manley made very clear was this new SUV wouldn't be wearing a Ram badge. If FCA was to go forward with this, it would be part of the Chrysler, Dodge, or Jeep.

Interesting, I know RAM has their 2 door full size SUV in Mexico. Not sure if it is still in production this year or not, but I have been surprised that they have not done this sooner. After all it would not be hard to add the 3rd row and enclose the bed so it is a Suburban / Expedition fighter.

Just in time for the return of high fuel prices, another ChryCo SUV that will play second fiddle to the Yukon/Tahoe juggernauts, and be cross-shopped with a Lincoln SUV that's nearly as old as Honest Abe.

Why is FCA terrible at everything?

Sergio is just proving that he can still shoot himself in the leg and survive. Stupid is as Stupid Does.

gas prices aren't going to be skyrocketing anytime soon.. and yes, FCA should have done this the last time they redesigned the Ram. These are very high margin vehicles and even if they come in third behind GM and Ford, they'll still be ahead of Toyota and Nissan... which means a good chunk of profit for FCA.
