2017 ZL1 Camaro 640hp

I'm greatly confused by the application of the 10-speed transmission. I knew Ford and GM were working on it, but why is it going in the Camaro when the 8-speed CTS-V isn't even a year old? Will the Corvette Z06 and Cadillac ATS-V/CTS-V models soldier on with a less advanced performance transmission than a less expensive Camaro?

 

Besides that, the Camaro ZL1 looks like it'll be an absolute monster. It may be the fastest of all the LT4 applications with its lower weight than CTS-V and greater ventilation than the Z06.

I would suspect that the fact that the ZL1 is a '17 model has more to do with the inclusion of the 10speed than anything else. I would also venture to say that the 10speed will go to 2017 RWD Cadillacs. Do I, after just buying a Vseries feel slighted? Yes and no. I am interested in the performance capabilities of the 10speed.. while at the same time being OK with not having it in its first year of application.. it being an industry first. Furthermore I will never take my Cadillac to the track. That is just fact.

As to the Vette getting it.. perhaps it has something to do with the Vette having a slightly powertrain layout than the Camaro.. It's tranny being rear mounted and all

Well I'll be damned, that's one sharp looking Camaro! 

 

The wheels looks GREAT!

 

The hood looks GREAT!

 

The black is used perfectly! 

 

If I'm going to nit pick the exterior changes it would be the(most likely) functional front splitter being a little large. 

 

It is odd that GM would release the first issue of the 10spd in a Chevy and that Chevy wouldn't be a Corvette Z06 but that goes to show that GM still has some issues like Ford/Lincoln with crap like that. The premier premium stuff should start in their...premium... vehicles or at least be released together.

I too was a bit shocked to read about the 10-speed auto (I had assumed the Raptor was going to get it first). I don't think it'll make any meaningful difference as far as acceleration goes (3.3 as opposed to 3.4 to 60 is a reasonable guess). In fact, I'm a bit concerned about how they're going to utilize all the ratios, especially considering how FCA has been trying to get the recipe for their nine-speed right. I'm guessing that a transaxle app for the Corvette will be forthcoming, as Casa alluded to.

But that's it for nitpicking. The car is a masterpiece. And hey, it still has a stick, right? The power to weight plus the wider rubber out back will probably make it at least as quick as a Hellcat in a straight line. And when the road gets curvy it should eat the GT350 alive.

I must admit...

The thought of that car has got me giggling. Like the first time I saw a boobie.

 

I must make another admission...

If the ZL-1 is gonna look like that from Car & Driver's article, I just got a boner, like the first time I touched a boobie.

 

The wide hips and all other boy racer attachements really transform (pun intended) this car for me in ways I did not think was possible.

She's a beauty. Everything I was hoping it would be and more.

I like all kinds of cars, but very few make me seriously look into buying them. But I'll be making a better effort to slam down the truck payments to accommodate one of these in my fleet.

I am in agreement with everyone else on the 10-speed. I was surprised to see them put it in production so soon when they just started using 8 speeds. So that was unexpected. I also wondered why Cadillac or Corvette wouldn't get it first. Unless they wanted to work the bugs out first on a car with a less discerning buyer.

I wonder if there will be a fwd version of the 10 speed anytime soon. Because a transmission like that has more benefit to a small engine like a 150 HP to maximize the powerband.

Guys, keep in mind development cadences. The CTS-V, the Cadillac with the greatest similarities to the powertrain in the ZL1 would have needed to finish validation testing over 2 years ago to go into the 2015 model year car. 

 

SMK, the FWD automatic will be a 9-speed I believe. 


Also.... so much for GM having to wait a while before it gets access to the 10-Speed like some people told us would be the case.

The car is fantastic. No doubt about that. Uh... the Hellcat has been the straight-line and top speed champ for about two years now. If it falls to the Camaro it will have been a good run, but the wheel continues to turn.

Again: if the manufacturer does smack talk on Ford, and the guy running this forum smack talks on a Ford troll who supposedly works for the company... I'm pretty comfortable in saying what I say, and laughing at the thin-skinned folks who single me out for downvoting.

The Hellcat wasn't even the top speed leader when it first came out(mfgr claim: 199mph GT500 mrgr claim:202 - both stupid manufacturer claims). Horsepower king, yes. power:weight ratio = GT500.  The only thing the Hellcat did over the GT500 was use an independent rear end and had an automatic trans. ZL1 was the best all around car of those three. While not the quickest or fastest it gave the best package. Literally, all the Hellcat has ever really had is raw power but even it's heft was too much to the point of 100% driver skill would win in a race.

Ya. About that CLAIMED top speed...

Nobody ever saw 202 in the GT500. Car and Driver never even saw 190. Meanwhile, the Charger (granted, a different car) made sure that they got video out there demonstrating a two-way average run showing its claimed top speed was legit.

Long story short: people (and some publications) are getting tired of Ford, and folks who represent Ford, talking out their ass.

Mmmmm I really do enjoy it! It's just tough to find around here for some reason. A store will have it and I'll buy it and then because salt isn't one thing you buy weekly or even monthly by the time I go to buy it again the store doesn't have it anymore!  :explode:

I've read at least one report that suggests that the ZL1 will start at 60 grand with a curb weight of about 3850 pounds. If that's the case then it'll be the same price as a loaded GT350 and the GT350R.

It will be up 114hp on both cars. It'll be up about 210 pounds-feet on both cars. And all while having a curb weight only about 80 pounds more than the GT350.

It's not even fair really

I think U hit the nail on the head.. but I also believe that we will see 2017 Caddys with the tranny as well. In particular a simultaneous launch of the TTV8 and 10Speed in the CT6 "VSport."

 

Keep in mind simple logic.. the ZL1 is the first 2017 high-end V8 model announced. The GS, another announced '17, doesn't have the same config as other cars.. and has the exclusive TR6070 7speed Manual Tranny due to the tranny being behind the driver instead of under him/her.

Remember all the hoopla over the Flat-Plane 5.2L in the GT350? Quite frankly this current Mustang leaves me unimpressed when viewed up against the might of the Alpha based Camaro. Hell.. it left me unimpressed versus the ZETA based SS, Z28, and ZL1 as well.

Found This:

 

Morton's Hot Salt just can NOT be found so I made my own by what ingredients were labeled on the bottle. I bought some of the spices on line at www.myspicesage.com. Just buy the 1 ounce size with is $3.75-$4.00 each with free shipping. This recipe makes around 6 ounces and I just refill my old Morton's Hot Salt bottles with it. 9 teaspoons regular salt, 3 teaspoons Smoked Paprika (store bought), 3 teaspoons chipotle pepper ground (My Spice Sage, 1oz $3.75), 1 1/2 teaspoons Habanero Pepper powder (My Sage, 1oz $4.00), 1 1/2 teaspoons cayenne pepper ground (store bought). Mix this all together and store in airtight container. If you feel there's too much salt then mix everything else together then add salt in smaller amounts till it's what you like. This is to my taste, but it has the heat. Good Luck.

I'll give props where props are due: the Voodoo sounds amazing. And it would be an awesome thing to drop in a mid-engine, carbon-fibre tub...

But in making it Ford also made the Civic Si of ponycars: you gotta rev the whee out of it to keep from being beat out off the line by an SS or 392. And then you factor in the price premium of the Shelby and it all goes pear-shaped.

The 10 speed is for RWD applications while the 9 speed is for FWD.

It could arrive with the V8  in CT6, the risk Cadillac has is they can't have any flaws or issues with a new transmission.  They are on fragile ground as it is, anything faulty and the press will pick it apart and they can't risk buyers leaving for the import brands.  The Camaro's fan base is pretty set, there is really one other option which is the Mustang, perhaps Corvette.  But it could be good to work out any bugs on a low volume Camaro rather than on the prestige products that need to maintain the high image.

 

I'd expect that 10-speed to go into every rwd product GM makes from Silverado to ATS to Corvette.  Anything to help CAFE, and I think also the 10-speed in the Silverado could signal the end of the V8 in the Silverado except for HD versions.  They can't have the #1 selling product at GM with a 5.3 liter V8 and hit a 50 mpg CAFE number.
