Watching the Super Bowl ads, I got to wondering..has Tesla ever had a TV commercial, don't recall ever seeing one?

If they can't keep up with demand as it is there's no point in increasing the demand quite yet. But I agree, I don't think I've ever seen one.

There's no point in Tesla having TV commercials.

On the contrary, watch some of their recent YouTube videos, and they're epic videos to be honest.

Why, do they have a baby puppy monkey baby monkey puppy in them?

Well Reg, I guess Tesla's commercials are not as epic as what we saw from Buick yesterday...

Yeah...I mean a couple of broads trying to catch a bouquet of flowers and a couple of idiot guys saying that they "Odelled it" and then they couldnt believe the convertible was a Buick just oozes betterer baby puppy monkey baby monkey puppy...

Head 2 Head Tesla versus HellCat

Awesome machines. Both of them.

Somehow this song is appropriate for this moment...

I wish I lived in the Golden Age, giving it up on the Broadway stage.

Hang with the rats and smoke cigars, have a break with Frank and count the stars.

Dressed to the nines, with hair to match. Shiny jewels, casino cash.

Tapping feet, wanna take the lead. A trip back in time is all I need!

Sing it out loud, gonna get back honey!

Sing it out loud, get away with me!

Sing it out loud, on a trip back honey!

Sing it out loud and let yourself free!

I’m on my way, gonna make it big, gonna make the songs for the chicks to dig.

It’s really hot and a little bit sour, we’re getting your strength to maximum power.

Flying away from reality, whatever ever happened to gravity?

I see it clear, a shooting star! I’m a really good singer la-di-da-da-da!

Sing it out loud, gonna get back honey!

Sing it out loud, get away with me!

Sing it out loud, on a trip back honey!

Sing it out loud and let yourself free! [2x]

Ooooh, Silver screen on a rainy day, Sally Bowles in a cabaret.

Shaking sticks, oh what a show, rushing joy from tip to toe.

Rambling down the boulevard, with a fire burning in a wooden heart.

My mind is set, I walk the line!

But I never really thought it would feel this fine! Yeah!

Sing it out loud, gonna get back honey!

Sing it out loud, get away with me!

Sing it out loud, on a trip back honey!

Sing it out loud and let yourself free!

Because in a way...the Golden Age of Horsepower is NOW!  A Second Coming...

The Charger is a modern old school muscle car while the Tesla represents the future...

Enjoy!

PS: If the rat pack was still alive...Frank and Dean and Joey and Sammy, they'd be robbin' them Casinos and their getaway cars would be these two...obviously wwith scotch in hand and cigar in mouth.

Swing, baby! 18-Karat rides!

I do wonder when the German big 3 will have full electric versions of their compact and midsize sedans on sale..then there will be a credible threat to Tesla's growth..

Audi has a couple electric only models coming in 2017-18.  Mercedes is working on an electric car platform that will spawn 2 sedans and 2 crossovers.  These will be dedicated electric vehicles, rather than an E-class converted to an electric car.  So Tesla could have a threat coming.  BMW has the i5 in the works already.

I thought the OBJ Buick commercial was top notch.  The car even looked good in it.  Buick is desperate to become hip.  And that's ok.

I really like those Ellie Kemper Buick commercials too.  I know some think they are cheesy, and they are, but i do think they will connect with women and a younger demograhic.  Too bad the product wasn't all there first.

"Buick is desperate to become hip."

True dat...

And THAT is why that OBJ commercial sucked big time...

Not only is the "Not your father's Oldsmobile" shtick old and stale...from the Oldsmobile days...that angle for Buick has also come to an end....Buick should have ended that last year and for this Superbowl...number 50 might add, should have been something unique...

Oh...because using an up and coming football star coining his own bloody name is pure marketing genius...

Because Buick has not hired an athlete before in its recent past to pedal their cars...

Because other car companies havent hired celebrities to pedal their cars before...

At least Montalban was sexy, had a sexy voice and the cars he pedaled  had fine Corinthian leather...

The reason why Im giving you a hard time here is that you want to dismiss Tesla so bad, that you even want to dismiss their commercials yet obviously give a pass to a very mediocre effort by Buick for that stolen "This aint your father's Olds" campaign with a very very FORGETTABLE performance by the future NFL football star...

At least withTiger, we could still picture him inside his SUV while his ex smashes it...too bad for Buick he was driving a Cadillac Escalade...

You want hip...WHOOMP! THERE IT IS!

The fastest growing hip sport Golf, and thegame'sbiggest star, ever, cheating on his wife...and then getting his SUV smashed with his own Golf clubs by his wife...

Now THAT is hip!

There is your commercial!

All we ended up with is an ad campaign from the late1980s early 1990s with a couple of floozies at a "marriage" jumping for flowers and the guest speaker blurts out Adele...

f300x0-256137_256155_60.jpg

ooops...Odelled...

Maybe they should have used Adele instead....look at that cleavage...

I bet you  that that cleavage could get guys in a Buick showroom faster than OBJ ever could...

So...how about cutting Tesla some slack?

Who in the Entertainment world isnt heavily photoshopped?

Even those young lassies in that OBJ commercial were probably heavily photoshopped...

And Tesla knows how to pl;ay the game...so much so...that the old guard likes to play dirty with them...

from a web article

"For new Teslas, about 45% of the nation’s sales are in California"

Californias % of overall national sales is only like 11.5-12% or so, (estimating 2 million divided by 17 million)

So the market share outside of California for Tesla is even less.  Probably closer to 2 tenths of 1 percent.  (estimating 30,000 / 15 million)....1 in every 500 cars.

The Tesla dealer closest to here is in a dump of a building in an industrial park.  Classy retail.  Can't go big time if you don't go high profile and nice on the showroom.  Gotta be in a visible location too.

I see one XLR in York periodically (he must share part of my commute route) and I've seen the white Tesla we repaired one time on the road after the repair.  Here in my town, I've seen one Tuskmobile Brougham GT in my gym parking lot.  With the Amish leaving so much electricity for the rest of us to enjoy, it is a real head scratcher why I don't see more of these around.  There is money, maybe it's just a question of foolishness with that money.

Tesla around NE OHIO and Columbus Ohio is a rare sight.

I see more of the BMW models and I see even more 458 Ferraris here. Even in the dead of winter I see more Bentley GT and Maserati sedans.

I saw a Maser with the flat paint out in this weather it must be a pain to clean.

Yeah, I think Mr. DFELT's assumption of your affection to Asian men and you asking where's the beef is quite accurate on Mr. DFELT's part.

And that is the argument both of you want to represent?

In Montreal...where 100 000 dollar cars are not exactly a thing...because well, the money in Quebec...is not existent practically, and what little money some people do make...its taxed like you wouldnt believe...and yet...Tesla Model S are EVERYWHERE...P85Ds even...and only growing...

And this is the part of the problem of Reg's argument...

100 000 dollar cars are a niche...a small niche

Electric cars are an even smaller niche...

Yet...the Model S has managed to outsell equivalent priced cars form Mercedes and BMW and Audi...and Cadillac...

You say California?

Well, its because California is electric car friendly...so is Quebec...

Michigan is HOSTILE towards electric cars...so...I bet you Tesla does not fare well in Michigan...

Id like to see hpw the CHEVROLET Bolt does in Texas too...

Because the CHEVROLET Silverado does well in Texas...actually, ANY gas guzzling pick-up truck and full-sized BOF SUV does well in Texas...

According to their logic, and we all know who "they" is....if the Bolt happens to flop in Texas, in which I have a funny feeling it will, will that mean that Chevrolet's electric car program should be ceased and desisted?

tesla, to survive, must sell outside its rich boy toy niche and hit a meat market.  or they will die.  the model 3 was supposed to be here a long time ago.  instead they dick around with falcon doors and make a really stupid looking model x.  and think that will grow their business.  what a bunch of dumb fools.

niche car makers die.  they could probably sell a couple hundred thousand model 3's but like the stupid Elio, its vaporware and really their ineptitude to capitalize on their market coolness i am afraid will render them into oblivion.  might still need 7 years to do it, but clearly they have no plan.  A shame because the Model S is a cool kit car.

IF they survive it will be due to being bought out or another automaker will make the bulk of the car and the electrics will just get bolted in their and rebadged

It was not an argument it was an observation.

Know well and clear what the challenges are and it has nothing to so with how many I see. I could give you a laundry list.

Hell if Porsche comes out with their sedan it could kill the S model in one single blow.

Like Cell phones Ev cars will be seen differently. Most people will want the latest and greatest like the newest Galaxy or I phone. Tesla is not going to update the styling of the S in any major way soon and the whole game can change over night for them.

I can add in so many other factors like slow sales in China, not getting new product out on time and not having more product at this point.

Also the odds of getting new plants for nearly free like Fremont and the the fact to make them cheaper he may have to go to China on top of all this.

Yet there is more even over all this.

Can Tesla survive? Yes but the like climbing Everest it is easy till you hit the dead zone and then that is what makes it a game changer. A friend went to climb and that is as far as he got and really was in good shape but his body just could not take the stress.

I am actually curious about the cold weather ability of full EV cars. Batteries already don't last as long in the cold so what will that trim the range down to? That's one of my biggest concerns with full EV cars is the range when it's 20 degrees outside(like today). Then I would be limited(even more) and less places to "fill up" at. At least until there more charging stations.

That is a valid point and my own reading has led me to see that the newest 48V 400Ah Lithium batteries seem to handle the below freezing much better. In this I wonder what the actual battery pack is in the BOLT. The specifics will be telling on how far GM and LG pushed their use of the latest battery versions for maximum efficiency.

That's good to know they are improving on that because that was a major factor to my dad when they were looking at cars(and will be the next go around as well). He doesn't want to get a hybrid or EV that is greatly reduced in the winter months with our "fill-up station" availability here.

Does 225mile range become 200? 175? 150? 125? Because in the winter it's just harder on everything trying to warm up everything. Now I doubt it would drop to 125 miles but my point is the unknown factor of it.

EV's are just not fit to be someone's only car with so many variables... nail on the head with the winter range question.  Plus what if I, on a lark, decide to take my Bolt to a Test&Tune Saturday night at Cecil County Dragway?  I'd never make it home, while the guy in the rat rod '72 Nova I just raced gets home just fine.

That's also assuming you left home with a full charge and didn't drive it at all up to that point(for a full charge).

As for as I know(which isn't very well) there aren't any charging stations between me and my closest drag strip( ~30 miles). There has to be one somewhere in that stretch because there are some heavily populated areas on the way.

Edit:  Nope. Just looked at a map and there are only a few on the way to STL but a lot on the MO side of the river.

This is also some o my ignorance showing but do all manufacturers use the same plug in?

Some things I have learned about EV battery packs:

1) Avoid full charging, this is one reason that mobile devices batteries only last a couple years, Leaf, Spark EV, Prius, etc have a long life setting that allows the battery to only charge up to 80% to maximize the life of the battery pack.

2) Avoid deep discharging of Battery pack as it weakens them. Leaf , Prius both recommend recharging when the battery is down to 25% power left.

3) Use a timer based Charger to optimize the efficiency of charging your battery pack.

4) On hot days park in the shade on cold days park in a garage.

5) If storing your EV, plan ahead to keep the batteries at 60% charged so you maintain a balanced battery pack.

6) Minimize use of DC quick chargers to maximize the battery life.

Over all I am gathering additional resources as I plan to write a story covering EV batteries for the alternative forum.

Yes the auto industry has pretty much standardized on the same type of 120, 220 or 440 type plug to charge your EV. While at the track you could always at least plug in with your 110 portable charging cord and NOT have to stop at the Gas station like the Rat Rod 72 nova will have to do to get home.

Hmmmm a few things that I don't like when reading that.. You're losing A LOT of range with that driving style.

Let's say we have a 200mile range battery.

only charge to 80% = 160miles

Don't allow under 25% = 110miles

I don't like how those numbers are adding up. You only have 55% of the battery to actually use in that scenario.

I'd never fit more than one kid into the car, while the people who don't make dumbass, rhetorical statements haul several kids in their vans/SUV's/trucks/sedans.

While I usually don't agree with ocnblu and his anti-EV thing it makes more sense than your three scenarios. A Tesla model X I still do not see fitting a Laz-E-Boy and if it did you should be comparing similar size vehicles to an EV not a compact to an SUV. We're talking fuel sources and not the capability of the vehicle itself. A Compact, full size truck, and a coupe can all be filled up withing a few miles of home with a range of 300+ miles.

Odd are, if you're taking children on a field trip the are young enough that you cannot legally have your child in the front seat to begin with(stupid laws, but they exist)

I think the drag strip was an extreme example and not really practical but the point(I think) is the charge time and accessibly at this stage of the game.

Full Size Trucks are just not fit to be someone's only car with so many variables... What if I, on a lark, decide to take my Full Size Truck to a craft beer sampling, Saturday night in the city. I'd never find parking and miss half the event, while the guy in the Tesla Model S finds free electric parking and gets to the event in time!

TOO MANY RULES TO BE FOLLOWED.  Are you a rule-follower, Booyah?  Plus I am proud of my 12.3 inches.

Like I said, I am going to do a full write up on EVs Batteries, but this is some of the info I have gotten from MIT, so wanting to compare it to a few other sources and how they tend to believe this. Also Tesla has proven you can have a 200 mile range battery with full depletion and rapid charging, so this is another interesting comparison to do with say the Leaf or the upcoming Bolt.

I was surprised to see that the Nissan Leaf, Fiat 500e, Mini EV and Prius all do follow what MIT states for battery. The long life modes are interesting, so why not change over to the way Tesla does it?

More to come, that is for sure.

McFly you talking depth again? McFly I am talking at you! Who says you only have to settle for 12.3 inches?

WHERES THE BEEF? ;)
