Chevrolet News:Chevrolet Takes Aim At F-150's Aluminum In New Ad

The big news about the Ford F-150 is how it's constructed from aluminum which allows for improved fuel economy and massive weight loss. Chevrolet is going to be taking aim at this with a new social media campaign and ad.

Automotive News reports that the ad features a focus group asked the question if a grizzly bear lumbers into the room, which cage would you take? The aluminum or steel one? Most of the group goes for the steel one.

"Our trucks are built with high-strength steel. We think that's a tactical advantage and an important differentiator. We have a pretty healthy sense of humor about it," said Sandor Piszar, the marketing director for the Silverado.

This ad brings the topic of the aluminum construction to the forefront - something Ford hasn't really mentioned in its ads for the F-150. But it also brings risks to both brands.

For Ford, it could mean talking about the aluminum construction. This is something the brand has avoided talking about due to reports about higher costs for accident repairs. (Ford has said there isn't a significant difference between the repair costs for aluminum and steel).

For Chevrolet, the ad could be hypocritical as they use aluminum for certain body parts of the Silverado - such as the hood. Also, rumors have been flying around the GM is planning to use more aluminum for the next-generation pickup.

"If I'm a GM engineer working on the next truck, I'm scratching my head a little bit. They're probably telling the marketing people, 'Hey guys, you realize we're already lining up our aluminum suppliers, right?'" said Jim Sanfilippo, an independent marketing consultant.

"Chevy's got a lot of good things to talk about right now. I'd stick to talking about the merits of their own product and not look like they're running from something."

Interesting ad. I would probably do the same thing to get a leg up.  

 

Another interesting fact, is that Ford's payload far exceeds GM's, because of the ability to bulk up the structure without weight penalty, by using aluminum.

But realistically, the frame is what matters, and Ford frame is pretty tough.

In reality, both trucks are solid trucks, but I do have to knock Ford as their interiors look and feel cheaper to me than GM or Ram.

Yes I have and still FORD Trucks interiors come across cheap in comparison to sitting in a GMC or even the Ram.

 

In pecking order, I think who has the best interior is as follows.

 

GMC/CHEVY

RAM

FORD

Well this was cheesy at best but the facts are accurate.

As for the trucks The Ford is built well but will be more expensive to repair and there is no way around it. Also it cost more to build and the cost is hidden in the options not the base price.

 

As for Ford I do like the Chevy interior better and the new Chevy is the best riding truck bar none. I was shocked how well the 2015 is over our old 2010.

 

Never been a fan of Ford interiors. The only good one I have had was my 63 Galaxie. It was loaded with nylon but it really was durable.

But I assume that was not the last Ford you have been in, haha.

It's a clever, funny ad. I'm sure GM will endure a ribbing for it down the line, once they move to aluminium, but it won't have the same impact as this ad does. After some pretty dumb commercials by Chevrolet, this one is a nice surprise. 

 

On the interior question, I find Ford's to be the more attractive, but after spending time in both, the build quality of the GM seems a little more 'confident.' But I feel that RAM's interior continues to be the best looking of the bunch.

However...Im in the camp you mentioned that when Chevy finally goes all out with the aluminium stuff all around and not just on the hood...Ill be ready to call out Chevy for it.

 

One thing I dont like is hypocrite stuff...

 

Sure...the commercial was funny, sure it packs a punch...but how much of that punch will come back to bite Chevy in the butt?

 

That commercial is only fine for the people that love Chevy and hate Ford...

Lets face it...that commercial wont make die hard Ford guys dump the F-150 just because Chevy says  aluminium is less safe than high strength steel...

That commercial might get some sales from people in between...those that are not brand loyal to Ford or Chevy...and when Chevy eventually goes aluminium like the F-150...then those people that bought the Silverado based on that bear....well...they will feel duped...and may never buy a Chevy again...

 

Why I say that?

Because there are many people out there that swear by the words of marketers...they are soooo naive that they believe everything they hear on TV...and these people...get flustered very easily when they find out you messed with them...

 

Im sure Silverado sales wont go caca just because of this very funny commercial...but I am not impressed by the message behind it either.

Man, it pissed me off when they pulled "Pool Side." I was hoping they'd do a series of those types of commercials for the Cadillac line up because they had attitude and charisma, but everyone has to be f@#king offended these days. It drives me CRAZY. Freedom of speech, my ass. You're free to say whatever you want... as long as it's in line with the current liberal agenda and wont make anyone uncomfortable. Well Caitlyn Jenner made me f@#king uncomfortable. Not because she changed gender, but because the magazine sexualized her, a woman in her 60s. I was chastised like a bigot on social media for my opinion. Hell, there have even been a smattering of cases across the country where people were told not to display the American flag--as in the stars and stripes--now THAT is a tremendous crock of horsesh*t.

 

The country needs to collectively get its head out of its ass, and soon.

I don't think the issue with dissing Ford is because of the aluminum as such, but rather the lack of results that the aluminum brought. Simply put, it wasn't the game-changer that it was hyped up to be. When GM (and Mopar for that matter) start going aluminum-intensive with their trucks I'm sure that they will be scrutinized as closely as Ford's were, and if they're still as tubby and inefficient as previously they'll be called out for it too.

GM & RAM have never been at "Tubby" as FORD. Ford only got to the weight of GM and RAM by using the aluminum bed. When GM and RAM go Aluminum, they will drop another big chunk of weight and FORD will be back at the rear moving it's TUBBY butt around.

Ford used aluminum to essentially get their vehicles down to the same weight GM trucks already were. GM doesn't even have to go to the extreme it went for the CT6 in order to stay out in front come 2018.. all they have to do is continue down the path they are already blazing; innovative ideas in processing metals in a fashion that doesn't take away from the structural integrity of the vehicle, while at the same time not going so far as to cause havoc with one's insurance policy if an accident were to occur.

I like the look of the Ford's center cousole but the GM and Ram's looks way more useful with the column shifer(even thought I think column shifters look ugly themselves).

 

I think Overall the Ram's interior looks the best and most luxurious. The Denali looks like it uses nice aterials I just cannot stand the shape of the cener stack and left hand side section, very tall and rounded, oversized rectangles.. just not my thing.

Me too, and not just because I own own one. My dad's LTZ has some really nice details like the stitching on the wheel and power outlets everywhere, but the Ram just does things a tiny bit better-the wheel is a bit heftier, the trim just a little nicer, the power outlets a bit less chintzy-feeling. Nothing that would out-and-out ruin the experience, but it's noticeable.

Also, the half-ton Ram uses a gear dial, not a column shifter. It's a bit strange, but you do get used to it.

When it comes to interiors, usually it's the little things that matter a lot, moreso than the overall style.  At least IMO..

For example, I love the top recess that can hold things or just a place to set things in. Not a huge deal, but something I love to have and use.

And what about using my laptop?  No problem with a flat center arm pad, which is by design, rather than curved, which might look softer to the eye.

Gear dials...they fit in better with the other dials that modern cars use...take a look at Ford's interior and see how outta place that shifter looks...look at GM's interior...its got all kinds of dials...they are in your face...and as much as I LOVE steering wheel shifters...man...that thing is clunky and MORE OUTTA place....and finally...look at the Mopar and see hw clean the interior looks...and more room for other stuff on the console....GM's console is also freed up...because shifter is on the steering wheel...but that is no place for a shifter anymore...not in 2016...and the thing looks like shyte...its fat and...shyte...at least steering wheel column shifters in the 1950s and 1960s were sleek pieces of metal.

If my old Ram's console selector actually linked to the transmission is probably have been more put off by the dial. But both are essentially switches at this point so roll with the punches I suppose.

Also, the knob itself is knurled aluminum, which is nice.

Sadly.. your next truck won't be like that unless you stay with older trucks. Everybody is going more and more electronic with everything they can.

Then I realized how stupid and clumsy an automatic gear shifter really looks like...especially when everything is electrics now-a-days...and yeah...like 'Bong saiys about the aluminium trim...

 

However...as you know...because we feel the same way about it...I dont like push button start...because I like the feel of a V8 engine turning over and roaring to life from the key itself...

Exactly. Very weak sauce being served when their are countless advantages to having a dial as opposed to a bulky shifter.

Hahaha I SO AGREE! :thumbsup: Too bad my escape is push button.. pretty lame. I don't understand how real car guys don't et that feeling of actually turning the key and feeling the engine turn over and fire up, as or short as you turn the key, with no electronics to run their own stupid cycle. And because it feels the best with a V8..which tend to have a little exhaust noise to them..and the engine revs a bit over idle..with a tad of cackle..OoOoOoOooooo! :cheers:

Everything is electronics now....there is no direct linkage...no mechanical direct linkage.

 

So...Gear dials. Why not? It frees up the console for other stuff instead of having a clunky lever...

Gear dials.... They look more elegant.

Gear dials...they fit in better with the other dials that modern cars use...take a look at Ford's interior and see how outta place that shifter looks...look at GM's interior...its got all kinds of dials...they are in your face...and as much as I LOVE steering wheel shifters...man...that thing is clunky and MORE OUTTA place....and finally...look at the Mopar and see hw clean the interior looks...and more room for other stuff on the console....GM's console is also freed up...because shifter is on the steering wheel...but that is no place for a shifter anymore...not in 2016...and the thing looks like shyte...its fat and...shyte...at least steering wheel column shifters in the 1950s and 1960s were sleek pieces of metal.

I completely agree Olds. If everything is going to be electronic might as well save space and just make it a dial. Aaaaand like 'Bong said with his being nice aluminum it probably doesn't have that cheap feeling to it like some actual shifters do.

I had some time to think about that...but Scott Evans and Christian Seabaugh over at Motor Trend made me over come that status quo fear. Then I realized how stupid and clumsy an automatic gear shifter really looks like...especially when everything is electrics now-a-days...and yeah...like 'Bong saiys about the aluminium trim...

 

However...as you know...because we feel the same way about it...I dont like push button start...because I like the feel of a V8 engine turning over and roaring to life from the key itself...

You realize that even most twist to start keys are effectively push button also right? The computer controls the starting cycle and won't allow you to overstart or understart the car anymore.
