A couple of weeks ago, BMW announced the 2016 7-Series. For North America, we learned that we would be getting a turbocharged 3.0L inline-six and a twin-turbo 4.4L V8 at launch. But Car and Driver reports that more powertrains are on the way.

 

A diesel engine is expected with about 300 horsepower, along with the return of the 760i with its monstrous V12. The Alpina B7 is expected to make a return as well, with 600 horsepower coming out a massaged V8.

 

There is also talk of a M version of 7-Series with mild hybridization.

Diesel and V12 are for sure, they had it in the last generation, they have it in other markets, they'll have those 2 engines here.

 

Whether or not they do an M7 is the question, I think they will do an M7 since Mercedes has AMG everything and you can get margins on cars like that.  For an M7, do they use an M5 V8 or do they use a V12 for an M7 or do they even do something like a twin-turbo V8 with a plug-in electric hybrid system to boost power.

 

I wonder what AMG is going to do, because their new 4.0 V8 is 503 hp, which they say they can get more from the engine, but still the E63 and S63 are making like 577 hp, over 600 lb-ft.  I think AMG might add an hybrid electric with the 4.0 V8 for the bigger AMG cars as a replacement for the 5.5 liter AMG V8.

At ;east from some pics elsewhere, it looks like you can FINALLY pony up enough clams to get that horrid black (regardless of interior color scheme) rubber school bus steering wheel ripped out of the 7-series. Maybe BMW is finally running low on the container ship of them they bought from International in 1980.

4 and 6 cylinder power and no M model is why the 7-series has been BMW's flagship, while the S-class is the flagship of the entire automotive industry.   S-class has a plug-in hybrid V6, two V8s and two V12s.  I wish Mercedes would cook up a plug-in hybrid off the v6 turbodiesel, that would be like 550 lb-ft of torque.

I wish Mercedes Benz would cease to exist... just so certain parties wouldn't constantly have their lips planted so strongly around their schlong...

They'll even have a 4 in a flagship model.

 

 

Acceptable only if it is not a Cadillac. Hell.. I remember people were bitching when they put a 4cylinder in the Lacrosse.

I don't think a CT6, A8, 7-series, XJ or any big sedan should have a 4 cylinder. Turbo V6 (or inline) should be the minimum, and they should be V8. Who wants a flagship car that is slow or has Camry-like horsepower. These companies need to find their CAFE credits elsewhere, or do full a electric with 500 HP like Tesla if they want to be green.

At least if you get a Tesla P85 it can still blow away Corvettes and 911s in a 0-60, that is what a $100,000 car should be, luxury and kick ass performance. You wants a 7-series that is slower than a V6 Camry?
