A couple years back, then General Motors' North American president, Mark Reuss said “That was a pre-bankruptcy planning mistake,” when asked why Chevrolet didn't sell the Cruze Hatchback in North America. That appears to changing with the next-generation Cruze.

 

Automotive News reports that Chevrolet showed off a Cruze Hatchback at its national dealer meeting in Las Vegas last week. According to sources, the model was billed as a 2016 model, but a launch date wasn't announced.

 

Chevrolet will be revealing the 2016 Cruze at a media event this week with sales starting sometime in the first quarter of next year. Automotive News guesses sales of the hatchback could start sometime there after.

My parents wanted a hatchback, but since the Cruze didn't come that way, they opted for the sedan.  Wonder if they'll get yet another "2nd car" in the next year or so.....

The reason you're getting down-voted is because you're basing your judgement of the car on the current Cruze hatchback and not the one that will be revealed shortly.

On a more serious note, it's good to see GM admitting that they made product planning mistakes and try to rectify them. If the Cruze sheds weight like the Camaro did and have even reasonably good styling it should be a hit.

Looks to me like Chevy has gotten serious. They are firing on all cylinders and funny enough... the new Cruze, Volt and Malibu may just be the first cars to come out of Chevy that weren't paid for in a Pre-BK deficit. The current Cruze, Malibu, Camaro, Impala, SS, Caprice, Volt, Spark, Sonic, and even Stingray were all in the works when GM filed Chapt 11 six years ago.

 

This car, if it improves on the current vehicle's success by just 20%, will possibly make for the first time forever that a domestic owned a car segment in sales, let alone compact car sales

Its a fact that I see more of the Cobalt coupes than I see sedans. That's now.. and when it was on sale. I always kicked me in the ass why GM only did one variant of the Cruze. Ironically it still sold in numbers that I'm sure put Honda and Toyota on notice.. a coupla time toppling them from the top spot

Balto/Washington too. The Cavalier was not a bad car.... it was just cheaply made, but as cheap as it was.. the actually "turned the wrench a bit tight on those nuts and bolts." I haven't seen a Escort in years tho. As if they quietly shipped them all off to South America or something

AMEN to the coupe.  Never understood why the Cruze hasn't received a coupe variant, when, as others have noted, the Cavalier & Cobalt coupes are all over the place.  Still see quite a few around these parts, too.

I'm not sure I follow you on the product planning mistakes-the entire lineup is pretty solid these days, minus a small SUV for Cadillac and a bit of size differentiation between the Verano and Regal. If you're referring to the ignition switch mess, then it becomes a LOT more complicated an issue, at least for me.

I worked with a guy last year who had just bought a 03 Cavalier coupe.. He needed something quick(not vehicluarly quick lol), cheap, and reliable. I actually helped ocnvince him of that over a Cobalt with a ton more miles. He was/is young and doesn't have much money and helps out his family a lot and the Cavalier was all basic with manual windows and such and I was telling him that vehicles this age/mileage will have things go and the more things that are electronic the more expensive and harder to fix they will become. Long story short, he loves his little Cavalier and the little EcoTech 2.2.

It's probably quite costly to make a coupe when it really isn't going to be cheaper.  Just different. People who probably want small economy cars want practicallity and small coupes aren't exactly that.
