The Jeep Compass and Patriot crossovers will merge into one model in the next few years. CarAdvice.com.au spoke with Jeep director Jim Morrison at the launch of the Renegade where he revealed the two models will become one.

“Yes, those two models will become one,” Morrison said. “That’ll be the Compatriot.”

Before you start groaning about 'Compatriot', Morrison says thats a 'fun' name for the upcoming model - i.e. not going onto the production model. Now the model will sit between the new Renegade and Cherokee. The new model is expected to debut next year, with sales following a year after.

Makes sense. Saw a red Renegade on the road today; not a bad looking vehicle.

I have 2 Patriots and love them. If Jeep doesn't have something very similar when I'm in the market for a new vehicle, I'll have to look at other brands. I don't want a luxury vehicle as the Cherokee has become and I love the size of the Patriot. I've driven Jeeps for 25 years. I hope that can continue.

Even with the Cherokee selling like gangbusters, the Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot combined sold 154,726 units in 2014....and that was an increase of 15% and 23%.  I'm not saying that either of them are great cars, but there is clearly a market for a jeep in that size class which neither the Renegade nor Cherokee (which sold 178k) fit into.

It does make sense to combine them into a single vehicle... but they can't drop this market entirely.

Jeep's ability to create amazing crossovers makes me anxious to see what this splice will bring. One thing's for sure, fuel consumption has to be reduced due to the projected prices and that may be one of the upgrades. The look will probably be more or less the reminiscent of both.
