Traffic lights could be done away with.  I could drive like a maniac and not fear harm because all the bozos in their dinky self driving pods would be in defensive mode constantly.  I am starting to warm to the idear.  :scratchchin:

Of course without any problems if these vehicles are safe and are certified by companies as "google and more". I am one of the people who always gives the opportunity to new things and that's technology.

My issue is that Google will likely be tracking your location and trying to sell relevant ads to show you on route.

Get in the Google car... you are the product, not the car.

Time to plan for Auto Virus that will block auto ad's and allow me to block the grid from knowing where I am. Or better yet just rebuild my exiting auto and keep driving it to stay off the grid. :P

Simple answer:

No.

Why?

Because I love to drive!

iPods were for the 1%ers? :scratchchin:

There's an immeasurably higher stake with a SDC than a palm-sized file storage device.
Or put another way; maybe 1% of an average SDC IS an 'iPod'.

- - - - -

I get your point; the price will come down.

The question is, will it in a timely enough manner to enable business entities invested in this to survive, and -whereas an iPod carved a new segment in personal music players- the SDC (aside from niche scenarios like handicapped buyers) really is just one new facet on the same cut stone- it is still functionally a personal transportation device. Now, if it enabled teleportation….

My point is, I don't expect to see these ever become commonplace in my lifetime.

Initially, yes basically.  While the price was not out of reach for those who wanted one, it was definitely a 1% solution.  It was introduced in 2001 for $500.  Sounds simple enough, right? Except you also had to have a Mac... and you also had to have a Mac with a Firewire port. The recently released iMac came with one, but only on certain versions. So the net result, if you wanted an iPod in 2001, you had to buy the iPod($500), and the certain iMac ($1500+) with the certain port, just so you could listen to 30 of your CDs (and no more) on a highly breakable device that wasn't compatible with anything else... including your car (almost no cars had Aux inputs at the time)

So just like a Tesla today... a lot of people can technically afford one, but it is not a prudent financial move for the moment.

But just like the iPod, the price of the technology behind tesla will come down... and the price behind a self driving car will come down too.  As I've pointed out in other threads, a good amount of the technology to do it is already available in cars today.

I would not trust it for anything. I know that there are some little train cars in Dubai that drive themselves. So what do you do if these cars crash. How will the insurance be handled. There will be quite a bit of disruption.
