According to a report from carsales.com.au, Mercedes-Benz is readying a Plug-In Hybrid version of the new S-Class for the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. This news comes from David McCarthy, Senior Manager Corporate Communications at Mercedes-Benz Australia.

Autocar has a bit more information on this, saying the hybrid will use a V6 engine paired with an electric motor and a battery pack. No word on horsepower, range, or fuel economy at the moment.

Mercedes claims it will do over 70 mpg. I don't think they are building this car because they think it will sell in any good quantity, I think they are building it just because they can. Sort of a screw you to the 7-series hybrid and the Panamera hybrid.

Green Hollywood types. Bill Gates. Warren Buffet. Al Gore.

I can state for a fact that Hybrid is the farthest thing from the gates mind as Bill has 3 Porsche 959 that he drives around here and you see him drive them with his wife to the Crab Cracker in Kirkland where he eats 1-2 times a week. His wife drove an econo car at MSFT but then even that changed once they married and no one has seen them around here driving hybrids.

All 3 cars I see as a waste of resources but then with the profits some of these companies make especially Porsche they can afford to waste some.

It's an image thing. Purely that.

Why did Mercedes build an all electric SLS AMG? The answer is because they could, Mercedes has a pretty big ego as far as car companies go.

Big ego also leads to a big downfall. Good let Mercedes build SLS AMG because it could. Pontiac built the Aztec because it could.

The coolest thing about the S-class is that there will be this version that will post Prius beating fuel economy, the S250 bluetec gets over 40 mpg in Europe, and at the other end they offer a twin turbo V12. So in the same model they have the greenest luxury car, and they also have the most powerful.
