The folks at Camaro5.org got their hands on General Motors service document on decoding VIN number on 2014 model year vehicles for dealers and found some interesting information.

First is the 2014 Camaro which features a listing of the 7.0L LS7 V8 engine from the current Corvette Z06 (505 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque). Speculation has it being for a new Camaro model, the rumored Z28 model.

Next, the document references a LF3 engine which is noted as "ENGINE GAS, 6 CYL, 3.6L, SIDI, DOHC, VVT, ALUM, TWIN TURBO". In plain English, it could be the long rumored 3.6L twin-turbo V6. The document doesn't list the 3.6L twin-turbo in any of the models.

Other items the document notes is the 2014 Buick Verano looks be dropping its base 2.4L four-cylinder and going towards a 1.6L turbo-four. The 2.0L turbo model will stick around.

The 1.6T in the Verano should address both fuel economy and power concerns. It's got 200 lb-ft of torque at about 1600rpm...would be a nice boost to the scoot.

Not a great suprise as I figured they would have a nice send off for the Zeta Camaro.

Just imagine what the Alpha Camaro will bring with the less mass and as much or more power with a better suspension.

Imagine if they are using a 505 HP V8 in the present car the next GenV in the 6 Gen Camaro should have similar numbers and better MPG.

The 1.6 will not only have better MPG and power but it I expect will have a much flatter torque curve.

Excellent news. Perfect for that car. I think for most folks that will be the sweet spot on that car. That also means the Cruze can continue on with the 1.8 and 1.4 and not intrude on the Verano. Although, I certainly can bet the cruze may get an engine with more pop at some point.

I suspect the 1.6 will find its way into many products and the Encore is one of them

I suspect the Encore was another case where the vehicle was ready before the engine they wanted was. Not that GM ever does that.

lol. GM does that all the time!

why the twin turbo is going into the current camaro.....it may become a big volume unit in the alpha camaro and on the alpha ats and cts platform. this gets it into the public before it arrives in the next camaro. break the mental barrier so to speak. corvette could get this motor someday too. Lambdas would benefit.

1.6t in the encore would be perfect.

i wonder if the chevy SS will get the TT also. Buick T type or grand national?

How about a GMC Terrain Typhoon II Ghost Rider Edition AWD.

Paint Black Diamon,

Comes with the Denali Package fully loaded but all Chrome is Black Chrome and on the front doors under the

GMC Typhoon II

Ghost Rider Edition

Then you have at the end of the edition a Flaming head

Using the new Twin Turbo V6. :D

All companies develop their cars and engines on different schedules.

But many also get the new platform and new engine at the same time. Just look at the Verano It has been through the 2.4 and now 2.5 and next will get the 1.6 Turbo.

At least they worked hard to get the trucks and the Vette out with the new V8.

What are the rumored power figures for the 3.6TT?

Not sure but the GM show cars with it were around 425 HP as was the Jay Leno Camaro they built him. The Holden Torano also if I recall was in the low 400 HP range too.

From what talk there has been I have heard from 425-440 HP for the 3.6 and that there may also be a 3.0 if it was not killed and it would be 340-375 HP.

Other than just lose talk and the show cars there really has not been much out of GM that we know for sure.

I doubt you'll see the Z/28 name on the LS7 Camaro.

I have to agree. I suspect the Z name will remain on hold till the new Alpha plaform arrives.

This is the engine that should have been in the 1LE. A Z06 for the Camaro line. They may just make this happen now the Z06 engines are available.

If it is indeed the case, it will be a big mistake. A 3.6 TT will not be cheaper, lighter, more powerful or significantly (if at all) more fuel economical than the LT1. If it is used as the base engine it will raise the base price significantly and doesn't make any sense. If used as a mid-tier engine, you end up with a car that is more expensive than the V8 powered top-tier model. If used as the replacement for the LS3, it will raise the price of the SS, lower it's performance and make it less desirable to most Camaro buyers.

What would have been a perfect fit for the Camaro will be the 4.3L V6 from the new Sierra. Tuned for a car instead of a truck, it'll make about 320 hp / 320 lb-ft. Similar in output to the 3.6 but with a much stouter bottom end. With AFM, the reduced drag from the pushrod valvetrain and the ability to use taller cruise gearing, the fuel economy will likely be as good or better than the 3.6 DOHC engine.

the 4.3 / 6 would be a market failure. the twin turbo, regardless of whether it has net benefit over the v8, will be in tune with where the market is going. If GM is putting it one car, it makes sense for them to spread it throughout the variety of cars.

If i was buying a Camaro, I really would take a hard look at a 3.6 OHC TT over the v8. I like the cammy sound and behavior of OHC engines.

I fully expect the 2.5 to be the base engine in the alpha camaro.

It would be cooler if its a 4.3 to be a small block v8 4.3

Toyota almost always alternates engine and car. When they do a new Camry, the engine carries over till the mid-cycle. Honda usually does that, but being in "oh $h!!" mode, they've shuffled things around lately. Nissan is still running the same engines from a few years ago though they've added direct injection.

Basically, engine and transmission programs run independently from car programs.

Even if the 4.3 is all new the name is a marketing issue.

Most people still laugh and joke of the old shaker it used to be. The memories still lingered throught the Vortec era.

Having owned several I know the engine improved first hand but They should have changed the engine to a 4.2 or 4.5 or some other size just to stress the point this was an all new engine.

There really is no driving lust and love for the 4.3. It is just the engine people get when they buy a base truck for the most part.

I do wonder if they have any plans to use it in the Colorado.

3.6TT is a nice surprise; I was expecting a lower displacement (3.0L to 3.2L) in order to increase block strength. If GM met durability requirements with a the larger displacement engine, then great. Cadillac will benefit image-wise from this engine IMHO.

In the latests Hot Rod they stated GM is already working on tune kits for some of their Turbo engines. It did not go into detail but it did say they would be similar to like what I have on my 2.0 now.

In other words they will make the premium required and you will see boost levels over 20 PSI.

I would not be suprised for them to push past 300 HP and more boost on the new 2.0. The Transmission is all that holds back mine as the old 4 speed is at the limit at 315 FT LBS.

They need a clever brand name for the 4.3 to make it successful like Ford has their Ecoboost V6 in the F150.

How does huge pushrod 90 degree v6 sound?

I assume it's 90 degree since its based off the v8. I very well could be wrong.

It will likely be a good engine, it just doesn't come with marketing tag lines that are currently popular built into it.
