Wow, old place that would need to be gutted and then remodeled. Seems really disjointed. Truly an east coast or southern style of home compared to the Northwest.

Now this is what I call a House. Love living on the water here. :D

There are so many things about old houses I dislike...tiny closets, tiny bathrooms, inadequate # of outlets and old wiring... argghh.....my 1500sq ft house in Phoenix was built in '52. The back yard and huge pool are really the best attributes. My next place (not in AZ) is definitely going to be something more modern w/ garage space.

So what did you think of the homes in Seattle?

One thing I love is that since Verizon built their Fiber ring here during the R&D days, just about every home, condo, apartment has fiber internet connectivity. Pretty standard to have 50mb download, 25mb upload speeds for $50 a month or so. :)

A few design elements I'm not keen on (colors mostly) but otherwise pretty well maintained for a 100 year old home. Would be over a million in my neighbourhood.

Very nice from what I've seen...I was talking w/ a buddy on Linkedin last night that lives in Redmond...sounds nice around his area.

Redmond is Microsoft Home Turf and about as modern and electrically connected to the world as you can come, but then with all the start ups, you can pretty much be anywhere in Seattle and have technology connected homes, even if you wanted to live on property up on the mountain passes, about an hr commute into work, you can still be wired into the computer world.

Didn't watch the vid, but from the pics, wonderul details. You know you'd get solid materials & quality construction instead of the poor general quality you get in a modern house. Really nice, and would cost a fortune to even approximate the features.

Says in ad it is a "complete renovation". Love the way they kept true to the original intent while updating it in critical urreas.

Too funny, but guess depending on where you grow up, history is for the history books and the NorthWest tends to go modern and new.

My sixztreen year old daughter really loves Modern, and can't wait to move to the northwest. She just loves the thought of living in Seattle or someplace along the left coast....

"modern" is fleeting, but quality transends time.

Yet the house on this thread is gastly and needs to be gutted and updated with a proper inside and color scheme. Otherwise, replace it with something better.

Modern can transend time if done properly.

is my house...

Very nice, now this house unlike the one at the start of this thread shows to me quality and character and I admit I have not even seen the inside yet. Some houses just say old and that is what the house at the start of the thread says to me.

Here is my house, I just had a new driveway put in. Been updating the house for the last 10 years and all that is left to do is finish the laundry room. 1600 Square foot house, 3 bedrooms, 1 bath, 1 office, living room, family room, quarter acre lot. Driveway is 40 feet wide by 65 feet long and that is not including the side slab.

I love it, all oak and modern inside. :P

Drive way can support Semi's, I had them use commercial grade rebar in 1 foot square connections points 6" thick. As my parents say, overkill but then I will never have to worry about it wearing out in my life time. :D

DAMN, that's a driveway!

But back on the subject of the thread... the house is done in correct colors for the style, imo, it is a cohesive package accurately reflecting the period in which it was originally built. I believe it is a Prairie/Arts & Crafts style home, and to re-do it in the original style is doing it justice, imo.

Yes. A modern redo of an older home, especially one with a distinctive style like Arts and Crafts would leave the house feeling disjointed.

dfelt :: are you reacting mainly to the color scheme/treatments?

I can understand objections to those, but "gut" in the industry is pulling down walls, ripping up floors, reconfiguring the layout.

Tearing any of that trim out would be a federal crime.

Now see, to me...the house Dfelt posted has a cool driveway says 1960's, and looks more dated than the house at the start of the thread...

House behind mine is for sale, this is what houses in my neighborhood look like....

I guess I really like more traqditional American architecture, and a lot of the 1960's were kind of an unsuccesful or less succesful attempt to be modern.

Now mid century modern on the other hand...I love!

Yes for sure on the color scheme and treatments but also some of the interior walls could be better done with reconfiguration. My use and tastes tend to go for more great room concept where you can have plenty of frends and family to have over and this home shows the very old small room style that just kills being able to do anything with large families.

Thank you, That is my house originally built 1952. I gutted the inside down to the studes and redid everything, new copper plumbing, new electrical, panel, insulated even between the upstairs and down stairs and used 1" sheetrock so the house is almost sound proof. Ran plenum tubbing through out all going back to a core punch down block and then connects to my core switch and out the Fios modem in the Garage. Cat6e cabled, all shielded even electrical and the Roof is a 100yr roof with Ridge vent.

Over all stays warm in the winter, cool in the summer and very little natural gas cost. Heat, water tank, dryer and stove all Natural gas.

Plus my driveway can hold 9 suburbans with no problem. :D

I like reading quietly 95 percent of the time, so give me a quiet book lined study, and we would be good!

I've had over 75 people in "this old house" for Christmas parties before... and I'm sure you'd consider my place to be too small. :P But at my place, we have three main rooms on the first floor plus the kitchen (which is closed to guests during parties) and the party is arranged in such a way as to encourage people to spread out amongst all of the rooms. My parties are so popular, that when I decided to stop doing them, I got several rather hurt emails from people asking why they hadn't been invited that year not knowing that I decided not to throw one.

I was at my boss' house for his 40th birthday party last night..funny how people congregate at parties...the women generally stayed in the kitchen w/ the food and wine, and most of the guys grouped together outside on the patio where the scotch and beer was, with random conversations about Las Vegas, football, steak restaurants, scotch brands, and premium dog food...was a nice cool rainy fall evening in the desert. He has a 1 story 2400 sq ft '90s era suburban cookie cutter house on a lot smaller than mine (mine is 11,500 sq ft), but w/ high ceilings and unusually high doorways--9 and 10 ft tall. 3 car garage, but only room for one in the garage because it's full of stuff...

Isn't that the truth!?! I know more people who use their garage as an additional storage unit than for parking their cars. I guess they save on paying those ever growing storage places for a rental unit!

My neighborhood is a townhouse community where everyone has a two-car garage and driveway lengths depend on the size of the land your unit was built on. I can fit both of our vehicles in the garage, and two cars in the driveway, with possibly two more smaller vehicles behind them if the first two aren't land yachts  Half of my 2100 sq ft basement is finished with the remaining half for storage. I use half of the garage for the kids' summer toys June-October, and November-May both vehicles get parked inside (step-son's car is parked on the street or in the driveway if we know one of the two garaged vehicles won't be used).

I like that...love the stone walls around the fireplaces. Nice use of glass, nice big yard. I could see myself in that house.. a pack of Yorkies, Westies and Cairns romping around the house and yard.
