1980-86 Ford F-Series. They actually looked beefy without looking bloated like the current Super Duty.

1984-1990 Bronco II. The closest the Big 3 ever got to a legitimate Wrangler competitor and with the Eddie Bauer package, the interiors weren't too bad.

I remember seeing those for the first time on the dealer lots. After the massive '73-'79 style, they looked positively wimpy, narrow, and generally incapable. Of course I thought the same thing when the '88 Chevy pickups came out.

These were as beefy as they got as long as I've been alive. After those the 1987-1991 looked they they ran into a wall, the 1992-1996's looked like the Dodge Phoenix and 1997-2003s look like worn soap, etc; so in my mind these always were the last gasps of ruggedness before they went soft. Not that I'd say no a 1970's Hi-Boy, I'm just too young for them to have been around much.

Now that non-F-body GM RWD stuff is getting really hard to find, The fading last of the RWD T-birds and Cougars are getting my attention. But I doubt I can ever willfully buy a Ford.

Love the 65 Galaxy 500...made a nice looking car.

The 67 Ford was a nice, lean bodystyle.

90's era T-birds give me a fuzzy feeling inside, as did the Mk VIII. The Cougars of that era, not so much.

Oddly enough though, for the previous versions, i liked the T-Boids and the Cougars and didn't care for the Lincolns. I would say the Fox-platformed Fairmont, based on the fact that they're RWD compact sedans...but every one I've ever seen was an unmitigated pile of junk.

There was no FWD LTD. There were 3, all RWD...the fullsize, the midsize ('77-79 LTD II), and the Fox-body one ('83-86).

WRT Ford cars, the last design that comes to mind that I like is the '63s (full-size & T-bird). I'm lukewarm to repulsed by everything else after that.

Merc stopped appealing to me after the F/S '56s, tho a smattering of others are pretty nice ('63, 64, '67-69 Cougar, that's it).

Linc Mark III is pretty nice, but the bulk of '70s-80s Mercs, T-birds & Lincolns you can fold into the crusher; horrible.

But in the vein of the O/P question.... those '60s designs I never 'saw' regularly, so I didn't even bring them up.

Ford current stuff is pretty appealing tho, but again- I'm still seeing them...

The LTD II also had a large front overhang..(was basically a rebody of the '74-76 Torino, was very similar to the '77-79 Cougar)

The Fox body car was just LTD, by the way...not LTD II, though it could have been LTD III.. Speaking of the Fox LTD, I saw one of the Mercury Marquis versions in traffic tonight, dark gray...first one I'd seen in ages.

Yikes on the front overhang of the above! Awful- Ford should've moved the wheels out another 10 inches each.

The long overhangs may have been a result of making the cars longer while being unable to change the wheelbase because of the cost...GM had the same issue w/ so many of their '80s-00s FWD models..

There are precious few Ford products made in the last 30 years that I would want to own... and those are the 2002-05 Thunderbird (I will own one someday), the 2006-2010 Explorer, and some current models (2010+ Mustang, 2013 Fusion, 2012 Focus).

As far as Fords of the last 30 years, I've had a couple Fox-era Mustangs ('86, '87)...there are several I wouldn't mind owning.. various '05+ up Mustangs (various GTs, Cobras, the '08 Bullitt, the Boss 302), an '02-05 T-Bird, the '03-04 Marauder (esp. the '04 in not-black), maybe a '98+ Crown Vic PI, a '90-97 Town Car, an '04-11 Town Car..

Oh man I forgot the EXP, and the later Escort ZX2, thanks fer the reminder, reg. I wish Ford would give us a 3-door Fiesta or Focus.

The EXP made a sizable splash with it's advertising, being strikingly graphic in print ads (not that kind of 'graphic'). I think the cars reflected/matched that to a solid degree... But it seems they disappeared relatively quickly; I haven't seen one in over 10 years.

The white thunder bird always made me wonder who really wants a White interior as it gets dirty so fast.

The Ford I miss is the 1991 Escort GT made by Mazda. This was a true Pocket Rocket before Ford Detuned it due to complainst from the insurance industry.

I owned one New out of college, my first car I bought to build my credit and had it for 93,000 miles. Would still own it today if it was not for a stupid truck driver that rearended my wife, hurting her and totalling the car.
