Sold the Dodge yesterday. The new owner flew in from California and is currently driving the car all the way across the country to get it home!

Got a call today from him - they had made it as far as Dayton Ohio at mid-day, and hope to be in Kansas tonight.

that'd be nice, but as I've tried mapping it, a lot of Rt. 66, namely in the southwest, has become desolate, neglected and nearly unnavigable. and I have heard unverified reports that there's a stretch in NM that is now on private property.

I've been wanting to take that trip for nearly a decade, and have been planning and mapping it at least that long, but it seems like a good bit of the Mother Road is lost to time. :(

Those reports aren't entirely true. It depends on which alignment you take. Yes, some stretches are now on private property and some are desolate and neglected. But, other alignments are not. Have you not seen my pics?

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh.

and I have it past where you went in CA. I think where I mapped it, it peters out somewhere in Santa Barbara. although I did follow little bits here and there on my last road trip in --gosh, 2006!-- some in Flagstaff, some in Albuquerque and most of Oklahoma (Reno to Tulsa). Tulsa is as far as i got though, but it's a nice town.

Yes, I think POPS is newer than 2006, but I'd have to double check that.

And, how did you map it?

I bought SEVERAL books, but the most-helpful was the "EZ Guide", which gives turn by turn directions and detailed maps to guide you on taking all the different alignments that you won't know are 66, unless you research and dig into it.

years of library research, mapping websites (Google maps follows it pretty well), and other fellow rt66 fans, both online and off, that have shared their findings. I've been wanting to do a full non-stop Rt66 trip since i was in high school, so that shows you how long I've been trying to set this up.

also is there one alignment that's more well-known than others or more recent, or whatever? or would a full trip constitute following several different alignments just to stay on the road?

Hmmm...guess I'm a bit confused, then. If you've done all of that research and consulted with others, then I'm not sure why you made this statement, which prompted my original response/dialogue with you:

that'd be nice, but as I've tried mapping it, a lot of Rt. 66, namely in the southwest, has become desolate, neglected and nearly unnavigable.

And, looking at your profile, you are a bit younger than I, so that isn't as long comparitively ;). Do you have a timeframe of when you will do the trip now?

also is there one alignment that's more well-known than others or more recent, or whatever? or would a full trip constitute following several different alignments just to stay on the road?

Depends on where you are along the road. For instance, central IL has a number of different alignments, with 2 being the most popularly traveled now, if that makes sense. A FULL trip would most certainly constitute following several different alignments in multiple areas of the road, which is why MOST people suggest at least a month for the trip. I, however, only had just over 2 weeks ... and, I've been told by several business owners I met along the way that I managed to see more in just under 2 weeks than some people do in more time. *shrugs* I'm sure if you went back you could probably find my posts that I made with my itinerary. I did a lot of planning before I went. The "EZ Guide" that I referenced before is widely considered the best source for following the path. I bought it ... and found that to be 100% true.

I've done years of research, yes, but still haven't gotten the whole puzzle quite as well put together as you do. I still have a few pieces missing, even after all these years.
:)

plus, with research comes conflicting reports that I can't always investigate; especially if they're several states away.

OK, fair enough. Still....some of this isn't exactly rocket science to find. Just sayin'. ;)

I STRONGLY suggest (i.e. you MUST do this) purchasing the EZ Guide. Jerry does an EXCELLENT job of giving maps and turn-by-turn directions. Admittedly, it looks intimidating at first, but it was actually QUITE helpful as I did the route in 2009. If I hadn't had that Guide, I never would've seen half the stuff I did see. That noted, I didn't take the time to really "study" the Guide before my trip. Oh, I glanced through it ... enough to familiarize myself with the layout and such, but once I started the trip, I found myself wishing that I had actually READ parts of it before hand. I rectified that the second night out by reading "ahead" each time I arrived at the motel. I'd get to the place I was staying, unpack, upload pics to my computer, then look at the Guide, reading to see what all I really wanted to be sure I saw during the next day's drive. I didn't get much sleep, but that was quite OK with me. HA!
