I usually aspire to own the highest-performance model of any given new vehicle (although budgets dictate otherwise), but shoot, the Rallye seems like a very nice Dart.

Posted

Here's a good question, though: does that $15,995 include destination charges? If not, then the new Dart will actually cost something more like $17,000.

No, in the article I listed the $795 destination charge. Add that into the Dart SE's price tag and you're actually $16,790

How does that compare w/ the Focus, Cruze, Corolla, Civic, etc?

How does that compare w/ the Focus, Cruze, Corolla, Civic, etc?

So here are the base prices of the Focus, Cruze, Civic, and Corolla with their destination charges added on.

Honda Civic DX: $16,785 ($16,085 + $790)

Dodge Dart SE: $16,790 ($15,995 + $795)

Toyota Corolla L: $16,890 ($16,130 + $760)

Ford Focus S: $17,295 ($16,500 + $795)

Chevrolet Cruze LS: $17,595 ($16,800 + $795)

Only the Civic beats the Dart by only $5.00.

Ah, I see it now. I don't know how I missed it.

How does that compare w/ the Focus, Cruze, Corolla, Civic, etc?

Here's the total shakedown:

  • 2013 Dodge Dart: $15,995 base MSRP plus $795 destination = $16,790.
  • 2012 Chevy Cruze: $16,800 base MSRP plus $795 destination = $17,595
  • 2012 Ford Focus: $16,500 base MSRP plus $795 destination = $17,295
  • 2012 Honda Civic: $15,755 base MSRP plus $790 destination = $16,545
  • 2012 Toyota Corolla: $16,130 base MSRP plus $760 destination = $16,890

So, I guess it's actually the second cheapest car among those five.

VW Jetta 15515 plus $770 destination = 16285

I love the new Dart design, but have to question their engine layout. Why buy an RT with an engine that gets a little more HP but considerable less Torque compared to the Ralleye that has less HP but considerable more Torque. The 1.4L engine will be far more fun to drive than the 2.4L.

Maybe I am missing something, but I expect a top of the line car like the R/T to have best HP and Torque, not be an equal to as much smaller engine.

Posted

people have been going nuts over it. they're jeering it because the RT is $22 large. but look at what you get for that price; it's certainly worth the admission. But $15K (ok, almost 17) in the door is still a prety good deal, especially when compared to the competition.

This is a very competitive segment. I want to wait to see what the auto rags and shoppers are saying about this car when it comes out.

Posted

The Civic DX is a unicorn right there with the Corolla L. Virtually impossible to find because dealers don't order any, their sole purpose in life is to allow the respective companies to shout "With a base price of just $XX!!!!!"

Posted

Seems like a good pricing strategy, very competitive and the trim levels are nicely spread out over the cost spectrum. I'd go for the R/T myself.

Why??? I like the toys and goodies of the R/T, but the Rallye has a better motor unless I am missing something?

I really like the Dart--but wish it was about 300-lbs. lighter. Of course, I've been saying that about most new cars over the past decade. It's getting good reviews in the automotive press. Hope to get my hands on one for a test drive soon...

They have build your own pricing up on edmunds.com. I think this is probably my next new car, maybe in the fall. You see these all over the metro Detroit area now (M plates). I think they are nice looking cars and should be more fun to drive than a Cruise. I guess we'll see.
